UKG2’s 100% Red Dwarf Weekend

Look! It’s exciting! They’re showing all of Series 2 from 9pm on Saturday and Sunday! And each night they repeat the same episode only two hours later! Isn’t it great? I’ve never seen them before!

Meanwhile, their website insists on calling Series 2 Red Dwarf VIII. And it’s nice to see their badly-written article on the series again. Holly brought the Cat to life, did he? Lister takes Kryten’s guilt chip out “frequently”, does he? (As opposed to, erm, once.) The smeg = smegma story, without taking into consideration that there are conflicting origins of the word given by the Rob and Doug? A 1993 date given for the US pilot, instead of 1992? No mention of the second pilot? Chloe “Annette”? Oh, and there’s the usual emphasis on the budget increasing, which as the DVD doccos prove, is overplayed. Yeah, look, I know they’re small inaccuracies, but added up over an entire article, it doesn’t come across too well.

Mind you, how you can call something a “100% Red Dwarf Weekend”, when all that means is showing Series 2 twice over, is beyond me. And why not dig out something that hasn’t been repeated three million times before?

The sad thing is, with a bit of effort they could have produced something worth watching. Just something of added value. Last time they managed this pretty well. But this time there’s nothing. I’m sorry, but this is just lazy scheduling.

Incidentally – yeah, I know I should have called the channel UKTV G2, especially as it was only called UKG2 for six months… but it’s a ridiculous name for a channel, so fuck off.

The problem with UKG2 is it should have a seperate identity to UK Gold. It should show things slightly less mainstream. But it’s basically “UK Gold. Again.” Which is just pointless.

  3. Still, at least it is series 2 and not series VIII, which shows that at least one of the schedulers has some taste.

  4. I used to love UK Gold, when thats the only real channel they did. As soon as they started all these extra channels, which are crap, they also ruined the lineup on UK Gold too. Still, I’ll have to watch my DVD’s that night instead as I dont pay for sky no more. I think I will still watch series 2 as I havent in a while. (You lot can go and have your advert breaks ruining the flow ;) )

  5. Back when UK Gold had the “gold bar” idents (you know, the one with the dog, and the one with the bar being forged, etc.) I used to get up at 6am before school and watch Jossy’s Giants. True story. They should repeat that again, like.

Oddly, ad breaks are one thing UK Gold seem to have got better at recently. They used to be really incompetently done (flashes of the next scene before the ad bumper comes up, for instance), and often just put in the wrong place entirely.

But they’ve got really good now at putting them in the right place. So much so, in fact, that I can take joy at a *really* well-timed ad break. (Yeah, yeah, I know.) If it’s done right, it just works really well, and doesn’t even seem like it interrupts the programme too badly. Even in a half-hour BBC sitcom which wasn’t designed for ad breaks, there’s often an “end of act” place where an ad break works fine. There was a brilliant one in Bottom recently.

See, I don’t just moan. I recognise good stuff too!

  7. Yeah that used to bug me as well actually. You’d even sometimes hear the first bit of the dialogue then all of a sudden…”Hi I’m Barry Scott!”
Sky One sometimes do it as well and it bugs the Hell out of me when I’m watching Star Trek.

    Two John Hoares!

And a strange man wiht long hair.

  10. > You’d even sometimes hear the first bit of the dialogue then all of a sudden…”Hi I’m Barry Scott!”

    *shudder*

    > Oh, and there’s the usual emphasis on the budget increasing, which as the DVD doccos prove, is overplayed.

Yeah, but anyone who didn’t know would automatically assume the budget got a LOT bigger. You can’t really blame anyone for that. I know when VII first arrived I thought ‘oh god it’s so much more expensive and flashy now, that’s not how it’s supposed to be!’ I was so annoyed at that change then (and obviously I still am, but in a different sort of ‘I understand why’ way). I didn’t even know Rob had left for VII. It’s not the kind of thing I thought about in those days. I didn’t know Chris was leaving either, so that fucked me right off. This is turning into a VII rant…

I certainly can. This isn’t someone saying something on a forum – this is an actual article on a site, and as such should be fact-checked. Worse still, it’s an article that’s *officially* linked with Red Dwarf, because it’s published by a channel that owns broadcast rights.

There’s no excuse for me getting facts wrong on here (which I admit I do occasionally, and it infuriates me every time I do it) – let alone an outfit like UKTV.

  12. The channel is promoting the weekend by showing a trailer consisting of the characters repeatedly saying ‘Smeg’.

    Lovely stuff.

  13. I honestly find it very difficult to watch UK gold yet often spend time on UK history depsite the adverts annoying the hell out of me, more to do with timing than content…..
Anyway, I gave it a miss, are you doing a full report on the evening?

  14. G&T Admin

Actually – I’ll admit it – I am watching this. I didn’t mean to, but I’ve been drawn in down to me not being arsed to do any work.

Which, erm, invalidates everything I said about not wanting UK Gold to show Red Dwarf, but SHUT UP.

Anyway, there’s some lovely ad break placing going on here – really nicely done. And I’ve invented a new game – guess when the ad break comes! I’ve got it right on Kryten, but wrong on Better Than Life

  15. When did it come on ‘Kryten’, was it when Kryten says ‘what am I going to do?’ BTL…let’s see…it’d be cool if it was after ‘I’d prefer chicken’ but that’s probably too early. When Lister and the Cat ride off on the bike? In ‘Memory’ I expect it would be somewhere around where Rimmer finds out Lise Yates was Lister’s girlfriend and not his. Perhaps that’s too late in the ep. Why do I even care?

  16. >Why do I even care?

Absolutely no clue. But I do, too. So out with it, John.

  17. G&T Admin

With Kryten, it was after “Well, I wouldn’t like to get stuck behind one in the cinema.”

With Better Than Life I honestly can’t remember now. Sorry. It was fairly early on as well, though. UK Gold tend to put their ad breaks fairly soon into the programme rather than directly in the middle.

  18. Are you doing a report?
    Am I fuck!
Go on, you know you want to….
    :-)

  19. G&T Admin

    I didn’t watch it all, I’m afraid.

    You’re all safe.
