An old simulant in a blue lab. Fuck.

It’s that time of the week again, where Andrew Ellard unleashes a fresh round of TOS into our astonished faces. This week – EDITING. It’s one of those TOS updates where nothing spectacular is revealed – just lots of little details that bring a huge smile to your face, and further reassure us that this thing is actually bloody well happening.

Nick Ames is the editor, and he’s working from a direct camera feed within hours of scenes being shot. Sound and visual effects are also effectively working alongside principal photography, making the whole thing into one glorious free-flowing schematic of loveliness. This sort of workflow is unheard of in comedy terms, and would be impressive even for a high-budget drama or feature film.

The one hugely tantalising aspect of this update, however, is the single frame of footage visible on Nick Ames’s massive monitor. No doubt this will have been deliberately chosen in order to fuck with our minds and get us speculating. And it’s worked, damn it. Is that… is that a simulant? It looks like an old Series IV style simulant, being apprehended by Cat and Lister in a blue-tinted laboratory. Despite being such a small and possibly insignificant “clue”, it’s got me very very excited.

Perhaps now all the people who seem to have decided that the whole thing’s going to be set on Coronation Street and is going to be a complete waste of time because of some inconclusive paparazzi shots will shut the fuck up. I doubt it, but you can’t deny that this shot looks very bloody Dwarfy.

  1. Is that a Simulant in the middle?

  2. lol I said It BEFORE It was written! Though come on… we all thought It.

Red Dwarf…. In Widescreen! We’ve arrived!

Good image there p2p… wonder who is playing the simulant?

  3. I’m glad someone’s got a decent zoom – I saw it, but was worried that it was some kind of prop in the SF shop.
    Definitely looking good.

  4. >wonder who is playing the simulant?

    Steve McDonald.

  5. Could also be a mechanoid in some bizarre outfit. Is that a chest monitor?

  6. Nicely dressed set, if it is a set and not some secondary school classroom. Lovely work, p2p, very much appreciated.

  7. I think Its safe to say It IS a simulant.

Indeed! It’s VERY close in design to the chap out of Justice isn’t it? No doubt there are probably differences and things have been changed/updated but when I first saw him I wondered if it was a clip from that episode. (Only a moment mind, the whole scene being different, and the update being about the new show, etc, etc, but the sim looks that similar from a distance.)

    > Maybe our Peep Show girl????

If she got a serious case of ugly. And a plumpectomy maybe. ;)

  8. >Mabey our Peep Show girl????

I would like to remind everyone that I made that speculation over a week and a half ago when everyone was speculating about her.

I am now very happy, now we know who makes the monstrous attack, well we don’t KNOW but it is a good guess.

  9. If the movie really is officially a no go now, then that being a simulant would make sense, as, from what I remember, there were supposed to be simulants (renamed ‘homosapanoids’) in the film. Perhaps some of that storyline is being reworked for the new episodes?

  10. no one has officially said it was a no go

i thought the whole point to these specials were to see what doors were opened after

  11. > simulants (renamed ?homosapanoids?)

    Not the same thing.

  12. Were they not? It was my understanding they pretty much were the same thing, just reworked slightly, but I of course don’t have your insider information so I defer to your knowledge. I do, however, remember a big debate about the ‘new’ name and that a lot of people felt the ‘old’ one was preferable, which is why it sticks in my head as the two terms being generally synonymous. But if they weren’t the same thing at all, then it certainly makes sense they would have different names.

  13. There was certainly a debate, but it was all based on supposition drawn from the short synopsis. It’s gone somewhat beyond the actual concept…which I still hope people will get to see some day.

However, I don’t mean to detour the topic when there’s exciting new guesswork to be done! :-)

  14. Oh detour a little bit. I was always under the impression they were different things. I just can’t for the life of me think what the difference was. Didn’t they have seperate origins? For some reason I associate Homosapanoids with big flaring upwards shoulder blades too, however again I can’t actually think why. Did we see one in the movie storyboards?

  15. G&T Admin

This is brilliant. But doesn’t Craig’s face look really, really odd?

  16. Oh this looks good! A simulant and some random scientific-y stuff on a table, this really IS Red Dwarf! And no greenscreen backdrop, which quells crazy suspicion on my part of all the backgrounds either being black or a digital matte.

  17. G&T Admin

And no greenscreen backdrop, which quells crazy suspicion on my part of all the backgrounds either being black or a digital matte.

Erm, they could have already keyed the background in…

  18. G&T Admin

Say it isn’t a simulant, you can’t just shoot an innocent woman in that setting…

  19. Oh detour a little bit. I was always under the impression they were different things. I just can?t for the life of me think what the difference was.

[detour mode]Simulants are essentially humanoid killer robots. Kind of like the terminator. Machines with biological parts. Sapienoids are described as being the next step in human evolution combining flesh and machine. That could be interpreted different ways, but it suggests to me, cyborgs in the traditional sense.

Therefore I suspect (and this is pure speculation) that the difference between a simulant and a sapienoid, is the same as the difference between a T-800 type terminator and a borg or the difference between the synthetics (Ash/Bishop/Call) from the Alien films and a cyberman or robocop.[/detour mode]

Back on track, it appears to throw light on the attack that was mentioned. I wonder if this guy will be alone, or if we’ll see a crew of the smeggers? (Granted if it’s the the latter they might be off-screen for budgetary reasons.) The Dwarf boys seemed to have braved up over the years anyway, no longer engaging ‘perambulation mode’ in the face of psychotic killers (but then he could be broken.)

  20. > Erm, they could have already keyed the background in?

True. It doesn’t look like it though. Maybe Ellard could confirm that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for greenscreened backdrops, but maybe not across the whole show (well, we know the Rovers set is physical…).

I’m really excited over how the CG is going to look. I don’t care that there’s no model shots (that we’ve heard of), there’s so much more they can achieve with CG, even if it might not look as ‘realistic’. I’m sure some people will still be wary but the last Dwarf CG shots were 10 years ago. Things have come a long way since then. Good CGI on a lower budget is very possible. Shots of the calibre of Tikka Remastered would be most welcome.

  21. > But doesn?t Craig?s face look really, really odd?

To be honest I didn’t even think it was Craig at first, but I suppose it must be. Certainly looks more like him than it did in the original picture, anyway.

Anyway, that does seem to be a simulant, doesn’t it? Hmm.

  22. >I?m really excited over how the CG is going to look. Sorry to go off topic again, but CG may have come a long way, but i still think the better model shots in Red Dwarf like from Series 6 are miles more realistic than say the CG on Doctor Who. The animation in Doctor Who is bloody fantastic don’t get me wrong, but it still LOOKS like an animation. Model shots may not be as animated on a TV budget, but i still think they look more realistic.

  23. > Maybe our Peep Show girl????

Maybe. Maybe not. But there’s a good chance that it’s a woman, bearing in mind the height of the simulant compared to Craig, who’s not exactly a six-footer.

  24. Maybe. Maybe not. But there?s a good chance that it?s a woman, bearing in mind the height of the simulant compared to Craig, who?s not exactly a six-footer.

I don’t think so. The chin and nose look too prominent for one thing. It looks distinctly male. It’s clearer on the bigger version. As for height, I think Sophie Winkleman is fairly tall for a woman. (Hence ‘big Suze’ although I suspect that might have been a reference to something else.)

As for the height, I think he/she might be slumped forward slightly to due to the other lads administrations anyway. (Oo-er.)

  25. Actually looking at Miss Winkleman’s picture, she does have quite a prominent chin! I’m sure it isn’t her though.

Or am I? (I’m starting to wonder now. Heh.) I think they would have gone for the sexy simulant look like Liz Hickling in series 6 if it were her though.

  26. Thinking about their history, especially Rimmers cowardice I’m wondering if this picture is what we think.
Are they constraining the simulant/person/whatever or are they supporting him/it/her?

The look on their faces could be aggression, on the other hand it could be horror!

I cant pick out any sign of weopons and a simulant would surely take some aprehending!

  27. Well my personally theory is that Andrew’s toying with us again.

  28. >Well my personally theory

    Is that english?

  29. On reflection it does look more like restraint.

So, are these cunning clues left by Mr Ellard designed to tantalise or just random shots which are going to tantalise anyway.

It still seems odd seeing a pic of Lister reading a book unless it’s someones diary like Kochanski’s for instance..

  30. >http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/features/fiction/simulant/simulant_6.jpg

I think Its safe to say It IS a simulant. Mabey our Peep Show girl????

Ah you’re right (well, about it being a simulant. Doesn’t look like the Peep Show girl to me). I’d forgot simulants had chest monitors too.

  31. I dont think it’s a chest monitor in the pic, there looks to be two fingers in front of it which would mean a hand behind it..It looks as if it’s something being held or supported by Danny..

  32. I had a thought about the new episodes… how the crew could suddenly get back to Earth…

Red Dwarf is a SCIENCE fiction show, right? And what was one of the biggest science stories of last year?

Something that certain people believe could cause all kinds of dimensional anomalies and unpredictable reactions?

So it’s 2010, somebody turns on the Large Hadron Collider, and creates some kind of bizarre phenomenon which drags the Dwarfers back in time and into the REAL WORLD universe, where the appearance of TV characters come-to-life on Earth causes the gang to become major celebrities?

  33. And then we have the Back To The Future-esque mission to send the crew back to their own time, which they achieve resetting the status quo for possible future episodes.

  34. And the Hadron Collider is built by a simulant.

  35. And then they went on Coronation Street.

  36. then the cat hung from a pole

  37. Is it me, or does it appear in the original photo on the monitor that there’s a head sitting on the table in front of Lister? I’m pretty sure I can make out a nose and an ear. It definitley isn’t one of Kryten’s spare heads.

  38. I see what you mean. It reminds me of one of the robotic heads in the All Is Full Of Love video (Bjork)

  39. I thought it looked like an Ood.

  40. > I thought it looked like an Ood.

    I think you look ood.

  41. Is it me, or does it appear in the original photo on the monitor that there?s a head sitting on the table in front of Lister?

I didn’t notice that! Completely bald… another simulant maybe. Interesting…

  42. So it?s 2010, somebody turns on the Large Hadron Collider, and creates some kind of bizarre phenomenon which drags the Dwarfers back in time and into the REAL WORLD universe, where the appearance of TV characters come-to-life on Earth causes the gang to become major celebrities?

A universe created within the universe would be interesting.

Lister fulfils his destiny with a copy of Jump Leads.

  43. Lister jump starts the second big bang, using Jump Leads on Starbug.

  44. Jump starts the second Big Bang?!

  45. Hey, New Red Dwarf is on TV next month! :-)

  46. G&T Admin

Jump starts the second Big Bang?!

Well that’s the final irony isn’t it? Red Dwarf, which ended on a bad note turns out in fact to be GOOD!

  47. *applauds*

  48. > Well that?s the final irony isn?t it? Red Dwarf, which ended on a bad note turns out in fact to be GOOD!

    DANNY WINS FOREVER.

  49. Lister fulfils his destiny with a copy of Jump Leads.

Considering that I recently realised that Llewellyn is more or less an amalgam of Rimmer and Lister (namely: he’s an uptight, pessimistic git who had a difficult children, and who just wants to bum around the Multiverse and enjoy himself), any combination of Red Dwarf and Jump Leads may prove to be mind-bending.

  50. Well, this threw us, didn’t it?

Or – Andrew – was it supposed to, when you posted it that day…?

  51. It was supposed to fuck with out minds, Andrew was probably laughing at us talking about simulants as he re-reads his script.
