In Kingston Town

Tiny picture

SPOILER WARNING: This article, including the links and comments within, contain some plot details for Back To Earth. But, as usual, they’re so vague that they’re not going to make any difference to your enjoyment of the episodes.

Anyway, the short version is: Red Dwarf filmed some stuff at John Lewis in Kingston.

Now, for the Americans and the stupid people reading, this would be Kingston-Upon-Thames, which is in London, rather than the capital of Jamaica. And John Lewis’s is a big old department store – this branch in particular seems popular with film crews, for some reason.

Anyway, Dwarf shot there recently, and used it for a fictional department store called “Price Smashers”. Suddenly, that picture from earlier makes much more sense – that sign says Price Smashers! You can just about make it out from the bottoms of the letters now we know – the S and the M from Smashers must be in the fist, but you can make out the “ashers” quite clearly. And the wooden stuff? Some sort of furniture, clearly. Excellent.

The action apparently involves “sliding along the floor at high speed, smashing up signs and crashing into tables”, from which we can surmise… well, absolutely bugger all. Not that it’ll stop us. As a bonus, we have an all-new, shitty, low-res picture of the boys in action. Marvel as they go down an escalator. Hooray!

Possible taglines for this article include:
“She was so gorgeous, she could have shot some footage behind the perfume counter at Lewis’s.”
“My film crew’s gone to Kingston/Jamaica?/No, they went of their own accord.”

EDIT: littlesmegger has been fiddling with his URLs, and found a bigger version of the image – clicky here.

  1. not the most interesting of locations, but proberly the most curious

  2. Not interesting? Are you mad?!? The new episodes of Red Dwarf look better and better with every news story and picture.

  3. well not the most amazing scenario for an earth scene

I don’t see how you can make any judgement – positive or negative – based on this news…

  5. Roll on April 10th.

  6. >Not interesting? Are you mad?!? The new episodes of Red Dwarf look better and better with every news story and picture.

    YES! It’s an escalator!

  7. It is less the setting and more the flying across the floor.

  8. G&T Admin

    Oh, superb work! Thanks muchly.

  9. You’re welcome. And as for it not being an ‘exciting’ location, it can still be a rather comical one. Seeing 4 people who are used to life in the future, climatising to life in 2009 and all it’s dullness.

  10. I think it’s a great location.
The more bizarre the location, the more intriguing these pics are.

    > YES! It?s an escalator!

    Precisely.

  11. >It is less the setting and more the flying across the floor.

    Oh, OK.

  12. > ?My film crew?s gone to Kingston/Jamaica?/No, they went of their own accord.?

Heh, I used to know loads of good jokes like this. Can only remember a few:

“My wife was eaten by a crocodile while she was watching a film starring Russell Crowe.”
    “Gladiator?”
“No of course not, there’s blood and guts all over the sitting room.”

“I’ve just got back from the far east. Been looking for gold.”
    “Japan?”
“No, I used a new method called hydraulic sluice mining.”

“I made love all night to a girl from Surrey.”
    “Leatherhead?”
“Yes it is a bit tender.”

And yeah the crew coming down an escalator IS exciting! Sort of.

  13. “So, this girl came round and we played cards”
    “Poker?”
“No, frigid bitch just wanted to play cards”

  14. Is this the John Lewis that Chris Barrie got fired from by any chance?

  15. Interesting how nobody seems to have made any mention yet of the fact Katerina isn’t in any of the Earth-bound photos…more interesting is the fact that Katerina isn’t in any of the Earth-bound photos.

  16. Maybe they’ve got just the one light bee and they have to rely on the ship’s emitters to create her. If she fulfils her wish to replace Rimmer then she’ll get custody of it.

  17. > Interesting how nobody seems to have made any mention yet of the fact Katerina isn?t in any of the Earth-bound photos

*thinks about going back to find quotes from several posts across board mentioning just that, instead decides to openly weep*

  18. Is this the John Lewis that Chris Barrie got fired from by any chance?

    That’s Harrods.

From yesterday’s Two New Piccies article:

It does beg the question, though – where?s Katerina? We?ve barely seen hide nor hair of her outside a couple of shots on the Dwarf.

    So fuck you.

    Also:

    “My wife’s gone to Bournemouth.”
    “In Dorset?”
“Yes, she enjoyed it very much.”

  20. “My wife had an accident while hiking on a mountain!”
    “Krakatoa?”
    “No, she broke her leg.”

  21. While we were in there and waiting around we did make use of the Apple section to go online. At one point Danny and I had G&T’s coverage of the Richmond shoot up…

  22. Ian Symes

    So fuck you

    Nice…

  23. “I’ve been in Africa, playing cards with the natives.”
    “Zulus?”
    “No, won every game.”

  24. Kuala Lumpur?

  25. Also isn’t the sheer volume of coverage for the specials absolutely fantastic? It’s almost like Dwarf is finally starting to be accepted as an established TV show.

  26. Nice to see they are spending their money well. Location wise it’s just an updated Backwards. The crew walking through a busy public space like Rimmer and Kryten in Backwards. Loving Rimmer’s garb, harking back of course to the pre-padded smooth tunic times of series 3-5. Kryten is looking extra shiny much like his series VII incarnation. I just hope they do the scenes onboard Red Dwarf itself justice. I wonder how much we shall see of the interior this time given that most of the three parter takes place back in 2009 Earth.

  27. i wonder why they are going to these places, makes me think they are looking for the cast, craig, chris, danny and robert

corrie for craig, maybe autograph signing for another at comic store, and no idea for the rest

  28. G&T Admin

I think the comic shop will confirm to them that Red Dwarf is a TV show – what with all the posters, merchandise and maybe even the SFX cover. No idea about Price Smashers, though…

  29. Maybe they just needed a few supplies…

    Yeah. Boring reason. ;)
