DwarfCast 22 – Back to Earth DVD Review

DwarfCasts: because it’s easier to do one of these than write something.

DwarfCasts from Ganymede & TitanSo, we decided to put our thoughts about the recently released Back to Earth DVD into a DwarfCast. With any luck we’ll have a written review for the Blu-Ray release given that it’s clearly going to be the definitive version of the show, and by the time it’s released it’ll be the ideal time to include a decent retrospective on the whole show. This was clearly the plan all along. Yes.

Sorry if anyone tried to download this last night. I fucked up the Feedburner link so it was pointing to one of the BtE episode casts… The feed was right, though!

  2. The extra 20 seconds of black on the deleted scenes wasn’t because Doug ran over, it was un-used fade out-fade in bits.

  3. First Dwarfcast I’ve properly listened to – good stuff chaps!

    > The extra 20 seconds of black on the deleted scenes wasn?t because Doug ran over, it was un-used fade out-fade in bits.

    Eh?

    > First Dwarfcast I?ve properly listened to – good stuff chaps!

    Thanks!

  5. >> The extra 20 seconds of black on the deleted scenes wasn?t because Doug ran over, it was un-used fade out-fade in bits.

    >Eh?

Joke. You said that in the directors cut that it had fade outs which go to black and fade back in, I was making a reference to that.

  6. Lovely stuff. One thing that annoys me is that they go on about being able to keep Chloe’s appearance a secret, and then they go and put her name in the credits on the cover.

  7. G&T Admin

It’s just occured to me that I still need to fix the White Hole commentary! Whoops…

  8. G&T Admin

What’s wrong with the White Hole commentary?

  9. Lovely stuff. One thing that annoys me is that they go on about being able to keep Chloe?s appearance a secret, and then they go and put her name in the credits on the cover.

They were talking about broadcast. Presumably everybody who’s buying the DVD knows by now. The only place I can see that really being considered a spoiler is the American market.

  10. G&T Admin

    > What?s wrong with the White Hole commentary?

I’m not sure how it happened, but for some reason the file’s been corrupted and is now only five minutes long.

  11. I never realised that Norman’s strop over not being in Back to Earth is just like his leaving after Series 2. That just makes him look even more bitter and spiteful. This is why future Dwarf should have Hattie in it, she’s been overlooked and ignored in favour of Norman so many times, and she’s never once complained.

  12. The opening theme of Dwarf Cast reminds me of the theme for K9 and Company, minus the “K9!” that is.

  13. > Pesky time dilation?

    ?in an amazingly compressed space

  14. Dimension skid. Happens a lot this time of year.

  15. Yet another great DwarfCast and a very good review, bring on the next one!

  16. These comments by Stabbim the Skutter have really annoyed me. You know nothing about the politics behind the scenes of RD/Grant Naylor. Most RD fans are decent and nice people who I always have time for but people like you are a waste of space. That’s the first time anyone has called me spiteful. You just don’t know what you are talking about.

    Norman Lovett

  17. G&T Admin

    Norman Lovett, there.

  18. That?s the first time anyone has called me spiteful.

So what else is it then? Cause that’s how it looks.

  19. So is that Norman Lovett then, or a sock?

  20. > Norman Lovett, there.

    Fo real?

  21. I can’t help but feel Norm’s comments above are a template he uses in case of annoyance. Watch:

These comments by th waitress at the Little Chef have really annoyed me. You know nothing about the amount of brown sauce I like to put on my eggs in the morning. Most Little Chef waitresses are decent and nice people who I always have time for but people like you are a waste of space. That?s the first time anyone has called me spiteful. You just don?t know what you are talking about.

    Norman Lovett

  22. Yes it was me, and this will be my last visit to this sad little site for people who haven’t got anything better to do.

Norman Lovett (who was in RD when it was funny)

  23. I think this whole little escapade is quite sad, really. I mean, a parting shot like that (‘when it was funny’), is just bitter. I’m not a fan of Norm these days, but I hope it’s not him.

  24. G&T Admin

In all seriousness, I think it actually was him.

  25. I just don’t like seeing anyone apparently so bitter. :/

  26. > Yes it was me, and this will be my last visit to this sad little site for people who haven?t got anything better to do.
Norman Lovett (who was in RD when it was funny)

For people who haven’t got anything better to do than spend a little bit of their free time celebrating the show that YOU were in? And actually lauding your performances? (For all those who are disappointed with the behind-the-scenes shenanigans, I haven’t seen many people here who don’t love Norman Lovett’s performances in series I and II)

I’m not convinced it’s him anyway. If it is, that’s a bit of a kick in the teeth to the staunchest supporters of the show, no?

  27. G&T Admin

    I have admin access.

    It’s him.

  28. If that really is Norm, and you are adament that you have been misunderstood and sold short, then here’s your forum: tell us how it really is, then. We’re all ears. Or eyes, at least.

Lay it all out here so we can get your full side of the story, or offer the site staff an interview. If you think RD fans have got the wrong impression of the whole affair, then tell us the story from your perspective. Defend yourself.

  29. Oh god. I’m embarrased. Ah well, he’s been called worse on this forum by people other than me.

  30. >Oh god. I?m embarrased. Ah well, he?s been called worse on this forum by people other than me.
Looking back in some previous topics, it is quite funny,
“He does a damn fine tit impression”
“whinging git who never seems to see the good in anyone or anything.”
    “What a Smee Hee.”
    “oh piss off norman please”
“Perhaps Norm would like to come round mine on Friday evening and we can moan together.”
“What a bitter old twat he?s become.”
“Could it be, perhaps, because he?s a two-faced old git?”
“Fuck off and sort your ?career? out Norm.”
“Don?t let the doorknob hit you in the ass on the way out.”
    “Norman Lovett can fuck off.”
    “What a cunt.”
“Fuck him and the ball he so desperately wants back”
    “what a knob!”
    “Norm?s a cunttt.”
    “I nominate Norm for Stasis.”
    “I don?t hate Norm, I just think he?s a bitter old twat.”

Obviously taken out of context, well some of it, still, funny. And all from one topic. http://www.ganymede.tv/forum/2009/01/norms-post-dwarf-tell-all

I think after the Doug Naylor commentary we greater understand all the MySpace messages.

  31. Soundable Object just gave me the biggest laugh I’ve had all day. Thank you!

Also, Norman Lovett – What a guy!
Given that he’s already stated that he wants nothing further to do with Red Dwarf, I think it’s good of him to search out a Red Dwarf fansite, comment on a review of something he wasn’t involved in and insult the fans of the only show he’ll ever be known for. Well done there.

  32. This video contains possibly the funniest delivery of air-quotes ever.

  33. Seeing Norm pop by here has genuinely shattered any illusion I might have had that he was a nice guy and that the grumpy thing was just an act. Such a shame.

  34. I want to know why Norman was looking at this site when he is apparently so bitter about Red Dwarf right now. Was he just sat there googling his name looking for criticism?

  35. > Perhaps he?s been taking tips from Iain Lee?

If you type in “Norman Lovett cunt” into Google the first page is Ganymede and Titan.

  36. That was the first thing I checked too- the first hit is the article about Rob Grant, though.

  37. I wonder if that will change if we type “Norman Lovett cunt” some more.

  38. I don’t think Norman Lovett is a cunt. I just don’t like him anymore – bizarrely, not because of his response to being excluded from Back to Earth but because of his comments in this thread.

  39. After the MySpace messages and the reveal that he would of been in BtE if he had been a little patient I think he is a little bit of a cunt, at the very least a moaning old git.

  40. 3 out of the top 5 hits is a poor showing when you consider the potential this site has.

  41. A thought. Rimmer killing Katerina doesn’t seem out of character to me. Remember, this is a man who, not a decade and a half ago, was trying to egg Lister into glooping a Simulant in the back.

  42. Plus, as she said herself, all he’s doing is damaging the light bee. They could always go back to Red Dwarf and boot her back up if they wanted. And besides, they all acted out of character because the creator was making them do so to get them where he wanted them.

  43. >Remember, this is a man who, not a decade and a half ago, was trying to egg Lister into glooping a Simulant in the back.

Slight difference between getting Lister to shoot a homicidal killing machine, and pushing a humanoid hologram under a car.

    >Plus, as she said herself, all he?s doing is damaging the light bee

“your pleasure and pain responses remain the same”

    >And besides, they all acted out of character because the creator was making them do so to get them where he wanted them.

Translation : A wizard did it.

  44. Slight difference between getting Lister to shoot a homicidal killing machine, and pushing a humanoid hologram under a car.

Slight difference between pushing a humanoid hologram under a car and trying to judo-chop the Cat.

  45. >With any luck we?ll have a written review for the Blu-Ray release given that it?s clearly going to be the definitive version of the show, and by the time it?s released it?ll be the ideal time to include a decent retrospective on the whole show.

    Out of luck.

  46. G&T Admin

To be fair, we’re at least planning it at the moment.

  47. The Blu-ray version isn’t canon.

  48. Is the Blu-ray version half human on its mothers side?

  49. The Blu-ray version is not required.

  50. The Blu-ray version and the Cave Monsters.

  51. The Blu-ray version and the Obsession with Colin Baker.

  52. The Blu-ray version and the fair enough.

  53. Other Blu-ray versions are available.

  54. Very insightful and funny Dwarfcast as per usual! I loved the Back To Earth DVD it grew on me of course, but I soon learned to appreciate that they sure as hell jam packed it with as much as they could given the fact that it only broadcast this year, so their was only so much they could do a retrospect about. I love the design of the box, it just looks so polished.

  55. With any luck we’ll have a written review for the Blu-Ray release…

I did a search but couldn’t find a written review… did you ever get round to putting one on the site?
