“We’ve had a wonderful time, and one or two nice picnics”

After the trailer was released last week, Dave promised to follow up with something every Friday until the Red Dwarf X starts airing. Ever a channel of their word, this week’s offering is Robert giving a sort of in-character message to fans, and it’s lovely.

It seems to have been shot in part of the corridor section, probably round the back of the two standing sets. The corridor area where this appears to have been shot runs as a sort of T junction, with the middle section separating the bunk room and the drive room and top part running along the back of both*.

It’s a very nice mix of in-character chat (something Robert always excels at, as anyone who’ve seen him address the audience during a filming would attest to) bookended with out of character nattering, which I’m glad they left in. It gives the impression of a very busy set, with only small opportunities to shoot silly promotional videos.

I have nothing much else to say about the mask, other than it looks absolutely fine in this video. I have no idea what’s going on with it, frankly, it seems to morph from one thing to another every time I see it.

* All of this is me making assumptions based on what I’ve seen so if I’m wrong, I’m really very sorry indeed.

  1. and those hoops?

  2. I love how Bobby starts cracking up on “So join us soon”.

  3. Well I don’t like the hands.

  4. Nothing I’ve moaned about lately – Kryten’s nose, neck or hoops – looks bad at all in this vid. I suspect it’s all to do with camera angles. :)

A nice bit of fun on an otherwise fairly shit day.

  5. >I nothing

Don’t be so hard on yourself Capps. You not nothing. You something.

    To me, you always something.

  6. “series 9 was a series lol its was a spin of this is why the new red dwarf is call x no1 1o and starts from series 8 ending”

    Quality facebook comments, though.

  7. “series 9 was a series lol its was a spin of this is why the new red dwarf is call x no1 1o and starts from series 8 ending”

That causes me physical pain when I try to understand it!

Also, with regards to the Kryten nose and mask….I think it’s a lighting issue. Seems perfectly fine here.

  8. I actually don’t mind the hoops.

  9. There’s something about the RDX Kryten that seems more legit than anything seen since Series 6. It’s the casual quiet confidence rather than the hysterical whining.

    This is a good thing.

  10. For some reason this is more reassuring than the trailer! The costume, mask and the mode Robert’s in seem to snap into place, and I agree with Jimboid, best since series 6? could well be.

Also, that corridor background just IS Red Dwarf to me, morseo than what what we’ve seen of the bunk room.

  11. I think Kryten was arguably at his most legit in series two.

  12. >There’s something about the RDX Kryten that seems more legit than anything seen since Series 6. It’s the casual quiet confidence rather than the hysterical whining.

    YOU’RE LYING!!!

  13. >Also, that corridor background just IS Red Dwarf to me, morseo than what what we’ve seen of the bunk room.

I can honestly say that walking around that corridor (and into and out of the bunk room) was one of the greatest moments of my life.

It instantly felt like being on Red Dwarf, despite the fact that it’s an entirely “new” set. It just feels right.

  14. It looked right from the audience seats too. I must admit I was tempted to run by all the crew and down the corridoor just so I could be ‘in’ Red Dwarf. But I thought I might trip up on Rapey Cock

  15. Seeing as the Dwarf set and Blue Midget cockpit appear to be red and blue respectively, does this mean we might get a new Starbug cockpit that is green?

  16. > Seeing as the Dwarf set and Blue Midget cockpit appear to be red and blue respectively, does this mean we might get a new Starbug cockpit that is green?

Those who were at the filmings can’t comment on whether they saw a Starbug set – but if there is one, your logic is impeccable. :) As long as they don’t use green lighting, obvs.

Also, I think it is technically still the ‘alleged’ Blue Midget cockpit.

I hope you’re right and they’re using Starbug as well. Imagine seeing new, beautiful model footage of all three craft…

  17. Lovely, lovely Bobby. *hearts him*

I agree, no problem at all with the mask in this one.

  18. There have been indications that Starbug will be back as well, although I don’t have the links as present.

By ‘indications’ I mean just that, nothing definitive. Off the top of my head, I remember Doug’s reply on twitter when asked if the new series would be set in Red Dwarf or Starbug, and he said ‘both’. Of course he might just have meant, Red Dwarf and another shuttle-craft, which could be Blue Midget.

Also, recently I came a post on another forum showing Starbug models that had apparently been refurbished. Sorry, I didn’t bookmark the site, but I got there either form this forum or the one attached to the main site.

  19. Trying to work out where that bit of corridor is on that overhead studio photo from a months back.

Can’t. It’s not that area near the bottom right, is it?

  20. I thought it was the back wall (reserve side) of the standing sets that we see in vision here. The Farside, thats not visible from the audience seating area, the
corridor that runs through the middle of the set can be seen as an entrance.

  21. What are those cylinders hanging from the ceiling?

  22. They are known as BobbyLlew incentive cyclinders. If BobbyLlew screws his lines up, they drop on his head….it is his incentive to learn his lines properly for RDX.

  23. Incidently, one did fall in the episode 1 recording and just clipped the masks nose. That’s why it looks odd in the nose area!

    > What are those cylinders hanging from the ceiling?

Lighting. In the top right you can see loads of them all being used to light a set to look like it’s outdoors.

  25. Which they did a remarkably good job of, as I recall. In that particular episode, I suspect people are going to have trouble believing those scenes were done in a studio, if what we saw on the monitors was anything to go by.

  26. > I suspect people are going to have trouble believing those scenes were done in a studio

I recently spent approx. 35 minutes trying to convince someone that the caravan, the house and the gap between them, in series 2 of IAP, is an interior set. Needless to say…

It does look pretty convincing, and it does help that they add a little exterior ambient sound in those scenes in between. Don’t pretend you don’t wake up in the middle of the night pondering this stuff…XD

  27. Waiting for today’s…whatever…from Dave. What we gonna get? And when? I’m guessing 1pm again, but seen nothing mentioned by anyone on Twitter or even Facebook. :/

  28. There is a new set picture on the RD facebook page, side on not showing that much, and something else coming later today.

  29. Yes, it’s a lovely picture and, considering what they’ve given us the past couple of weeks, I was only expecting a photo today anyway. But that is a lovely view. :)

EDIT: Just noticed that that was posted three hours ago. Investigated (sort of) and found the other picture. That’s nice too. :)

  30. Ah yes. It’s a lovely prop. I saw that one in context during filming. Nice.

  31. Just a couple of photos? Oh, well. They can’t keep up their full-tilt, full-power, red-hot, maximum pace all the time.

  32. So, some sort of oxygen tank, yes?

Overall, nice design. It fits in with the grimy, time-worn feel of the sets. I’m not fond of the font on the helmet – but at least it’s not the one from the series 8 canary outfits.

  33. Could the helmet and pack possibly be the suit he uses to paint the ship, thats what I thought when I first saw it.

  34. ^ That’s exactly what I thought, and I Tweeted TORDFC suggesting so. But I’ve since been shown that it’s a diving suit, thanks to the piece on the photos on Gazpacho Soup.

  35. I said it was a diving suit on Gazpacho Soup because that is what I thought it looks like. I don’t know for certain!

  36. Well spotted! That part of the vid is very dimly lit; I didn’t even remember Craig strapping the tank on – much less recognize the prop in the pic as the same one from the vid.
