Let’s Talk About We’re Smegged

…and indeed the deleted scenes, smeg ups and anything else relating to the Red Dwarf X Bluray/DVD release. It’s in the shops from Monday, but those of you who were able to pre-order from reputable online retailers should have had them shoved up your letterbox at some point today.

Our full and massive review will be appearing within the next couple of days, but in the meantime, you can use this thread as a place to dump your thoughts. Be warned, though – if you’ve not pre-ordered, or you’re an American or something daft like that, this will contain spoilers for the massive documentary. We’ve seen it. It is good.

  1. Guess we now know that HMV isn’t a reputable online retailer :(

I’ll be waiting till Monday to watch.

  2. I got mine today from play, but the discs were loose in the case so I’m hoping they work okay.

  3. Same thing happened to me!! Lovely play.com for you. So far, Disc 2 seems to work for me .

  4. We’re Smegged: Lovely. Without giving too much away, even though we’ve got a spoiler warning above allowing us to, I must say, I do like the special Model Shoot section. However, I’ve had a good look at the audience shots, and, though I saw assorted Team G&T representatives, my sister and I were nowhere to be seen. I mean, *I* appeared on the RDVII DVD, but, as you can imagine, our Grace is devastated.

And the Smeg Ups are great – I *was* actually Laughing Out Loud, doing the proper LOL thing. Great stuff.

  5. Oh, just remembered another thing. So far, the only episode I’ve watched on the blu-ray is Trojan, and, in order to get my full money’s worth, I watched with the subtitles on. One mistake I noticed was in the final scene, Kryten’s subtitled line refers to the “GMC” computer. I’m sure there’s another mistake, but I can’t remember what. One of Kryten’s lines is subtitled as “jumped up”, when I thought it was actually “trumped up”, and Rimmmer’s “Listy” is spelt “Listey” in the subtitles, but that’s not *really* a mistake…is it?

  6. and Rimmmer’s “Listy” is spelt “Listey” in the subtitles

    Irony, thy name is Si.

  7. Okay, two points:

    1. I’m using my mum’s netbook laptop thing, which is crap, and has keys that tend to stick.

    2. I’m not being paid to spell things correctly, which I assume people who write subtitles are.

  8. I noticed “Once again Big Arm saves the day” on the subtitles. Don’t know if it says that in the ep but that’s what it is down as in We’re Smegged.

  9. I noticed “Once again Big Arm saves the day” on the subtitles. Don’t know if it says that in the ep but that’s what it is down as in We’re Smegged.

That scene was a classic in the episode? Big Arm needs more appearances.

    Was it Petersen’s arm?

  11. Was it Petersen’s arm?

It was indeed. Much preferred him in the classics. After the whole drink and drug phase I just don’t think Big Arm was the same character.

I knew when I caught Nathan standing near us, during the Dear Dave recording I was prepared that we may end up on the documentary, I wasn’t expecting to be shown as a near-fucking close up! Gah. My stupid face…

  13. NEEDLESS SPOILER ALERT NOTICE JUST IN CASE

I was happy with Mike Tucker’s guest appearance, and the Observation Dome music.

  14. I knew when I caught Nathan standing near us, during the Dear Dave recording I was prepared that we may end up on the documentary, I wasn’t expecting to be shown as a near-fucking close up! Gah. My stupid face…

I have a feeling that you all might have been targetted.

  15. Excellent news about Mike Tucker!

  16. I loved the documentary! Seen it twice so far. I sent a tweet to Nathan Cubitt to tell him how great I thought it was and, lovely guy that he is, retweeted it and sent a reply.

Still can’t get over the lack of extras in comparison to the other DVDs though. If I went on about that though, I’d probably sound like an ungrateful spoilt twat. But still… *sigh*

EDIT: Sorry, just realized I could’ve saved my moaning for the RDX DVD/BR TOS Overview thread.

  17. So much to say about We’re Smegged and the DVD/Blu Ray in general. Will wait for you to say most of it in the review and then will add any extra thoughts I have. Despite the greatness of the extras, I have to say I was still a bit disappointed when I got to the end of them. Took me 3 hours but I still thought “is that it?” at the end. Never had that feeling with a Red Dwarf release before. We’ve been so spoilt in the past.

The lack of commentaries is one thing but it’s the lack of material that had already been produced and would take no editing/production work to put on the release that is the real bummer. Trailers, idents, vindalunar highlights, production stills. They wouldn’t even have to rummage through a whole load of crap to find these things like I guess they would have had to do for the older series’ releases. Still I can’t be angry. Still an amazing release for a single series of a sitcom.

  18. I wonder what would qualify as a vindalunar highlight.

    The next Banner!!!!!!

  20. I felt a bit uncomfortable standing outside HMV in my Red Dwarf bomber jacket, Smeg Head badge and Ace Rimmer T shirt. Not much changes in twenty years.

  21. I wonder what would qualify as a vindalunar highlight.

The video released by Dave called Vindalunar highlights. Incidentally, I’ve now realised it uses an unsnipped version of an actual Red Dwarf X music cue and it makes me love Goodall even more.

  22. I call out HMV in Angel for not supporting the Dwarf!

I didn’t pre-order because I have the episodes on iTunes and was more than happy to wait until today. However, I went in this morning to pick up the blu-ray and it’s nowhere to be found. So, I thought that the DVD will suffice for now but that wasn’t with the new releases. I had to march my way to the back of the store, find the Dwarf DVD’s tucked right int he bottom corner and there were two copies of the steelbook edition.

If the DVD needs to sell for RDXI to be made then HMV Angel aren’t helping the cause!

…and for this reason, I’ve not yet seen ‘We’re Smegged’. Gits!

Was this Goodall, though? i know it was used in Trojan, but I’ve a feeling this may have been library music…

  24. Isn’t it used again in F&S where it transitions into a version of the theme? Ram scoop bit. Whether it’s Goodall or not it’s brilliant.

  25. Doug Naylor – such a tease. Even at the end of the docco!

  26. Could a Red Dwarf video game potentially double as the unproduced film?

Great question on the ‘Cast Chat’ this afternoon on twitter. I would love that. They kinda did that with the Ghostbusters game.

They could bring back alot of the monsters etc from the past as well.

I’d love to explore Red Dwarf and getting lost etc – with Holly after a while saying, “You look rather gormless at the moment are you lost?”

My thought train is that that is a fully orchestrated piece of music that sounds like a full live orchestra. I doubt Goodall or GNP had the funds to make that happen before RDX happened given. Unless it was an existing piece he already had, but that’s an expensive tune to be sitting on i’d;ve thought. anyways, I’ve asked Mr. Goodall on LeTwittar so we’ll have our answer.

I’m prepared to be wrong on this, I’ll tell you now…

  28. G&T Admin

Also, interesting they didn’t even mention the music on the documentary. That’s an article in itself!

  29. HYeah, I thought the music-less documentary was a bit unusual. Given that it featured a couple of things – production artwork, model shoot – thatmight normally be athe subjectof a bonus feayure seperately, no mention of tje music was a shame. Especially given the problems, it lent itself well to tje theme of ‘We’re Smegged’…

  30. Alright so I’m one of those daft Americans who have to wait until January (WEEP) in order to get this documentary…. Anyone know if it’s on You Tube? Or like.. anywhere else? Hell I’ll BUY a copy, I’d just really like to know what Naylor said. His Tweet this morning/afternoon hinted about the end of series 8… where he TEASED us with saying Rimmer saved the ship. Rather evil of him really.

  31. He said that at the end of series eight, Riiiiiiiiiiiiixgjkjj…………….xhp

  32. I hate this phone’s keyboard. Oh well. Sorry, I can’t be bothered to type all that out again.

  33. I’m prepared to be wrong on this, I’ll tell you now…

As am I! Will be interested to know either way.

Also, interesting they didn’t even mention the music on the documentary. That’s an article in itself!

Yes that was my one big disappointment. As it was drawing to a close I was hoping they might squeeze in a few minutes on it. I was almost certain it would be featured as Doug’s rather passionate tweet about a producer not budgeting the music gave off “We’re smegged” vibes. And an article would be great. With the wonders of twitter it’d be awesome to get Doug/Richard/Howard to comment on the situation (though twitter allowed us to see the situation develop and even allowed you (Danny) to get involved) and of course it’d be great to hear how Howard found returning to Dwarf after all these years and how he went about composing new stuff.

In Dwarf related news I’m watching Arthur Christmas at the moment and I’m having fun trying to spot all the actors in the amazing elf cast. Jane Horrocks and DJJ were easy enough to spot but I’m having a hard time hearing Rich Fulcher, Rhys Darby, Kevin Eldon, Dominic West and all the other nice surprises in the cast.

  34. Couldn’t hear Kerry Shale either. Great shame that.

Howard Goodall has replied to me to tell me that the Vindalunar music and therefore the Trojan ‘towing’ music is Library music and not him.

    Well, that’s cleared THAT up!

Cheers for letting us know! It’s a great piece. Really thought it enhanced the scenes it was used in and brought in the laughs when juxtaposed with the naffness of our beloved Red Dwarf crew.

It doesn’t detract from how good that music is. I hate to admit it but some of the best music in Dwarf is stock library.

  38. I think the music situation was maybe too late to fit into ‘We’re Smegged’ seeing as the majority of its interviews were done either during production or very close to it.
