Let’s Talk About Twentica (on Dave)

Yes, in what doesn’t feel like an anti-climax at all, tonight’s the night that Red Dwarf XI debuts on your actual television. Twentica airs at 9pm on Dave, and this is the thread for all those of you that have resisted the temptation to watch online over the last seven days (Are there any of you? Show of hands…). And as this is the first thread with the shiny “Dave” banner on the top, I’d like to remind those of you who have already seen the episode to not spoil things for people in the comments, as per our spoiler policy.

Anyway, once you’ve finally watched the episode, you can catch up on the content you’ve missed from the last week, namely the episode’s talking points, Cappsy’s review, an analysis of the title sequence, and an interview with one of the episode’s guest stars. And everybody is welcome, regardless of at what pace they’re watching the series, to join us for our first Live DwarfCast of the series from 10pm (BST) tonight. We’ll be bringing you our analysis of the episode, along with a report from tonight’s fan screening of the first two episodes, and an exclusive interview with another Twentica guest star. It’s not to be missed – the link will be posted here on G&T (to the right there, where the countdown currently is) and on Twitter soon after the episode finishes airing on Dave.

EDIT: The guest cast for Twentica have now been listed on TOS, so it’s no longer a spoiler to say that tonight’s Live DwarfCast interviewee is Rebecca Blackstone!

In the meantime, the Red Dwarf XI game is now out! Well, at the time of writing, it’s in the iOS App Store, but presumably by the time you’re reading this it’ll be in the Play Store for Android devices too. It’s a tricky one to discuss, as the game does contain spoilers for Twentica, plus people may want to play through without having any surprises spoiled. So, feel free to discuss the game in vague terms here, but for the time being let’s keep all specific discussion of the game’s content to this forum thread.

One last thing. Samsara is going to be available on UKTV Play at some point today. We’re not sure when, but we’re assuming that it won’t be until after Twentica has been on the telly. If that’s the case, expect a discussion thread not long after we finish DwarfCasting. If it’s any earlier than that, remain calm and wait for the thread to appear before any spoilery discussion.

It’s all very complicated this time round, isn’t it?

  1. Except there’s no point hiding the name of the guest actor when it (and their picture) is plastered all over G&T, including in the header pictures! :D

I want Samsara to be dropped online during the day, like last week. Then I can waste work time watching it. :)

This is undoubtedly an issue with trying to cater for a divided audience, but the secrecy was for the benefit of those coming to this page from Twitter/Facebook/RSS.

  3. Having watched Twentica last week an hour or so after it landed online, I hate the whole damn thing now.

Watching a new episode of Red Dwarf was an event and you knew everyone was viewing it at once. I remember watching Tikka to Ride and discussing it endlessly in school on Monday, same with Back in the Red. My friends all gathered to watch Back to Earth and when Trojan appeared, I was on the board, listening away to the instant reaction, sharing comments and knowing it was part of a greater experience and a real joy to see new Dwarf as it used to be, on the telly at 9pm.

Now it’s rather spaced out, thin and lonely, knowing everyone is catching it at different times and therefore, the threads, comments and reactions all come in slowly and without the collective influx of opinion, critique, sharing of favourite lines and squabbles about story, good and bad.

There are no events now, only unfolding, spoilt glimpses.

  4. Dear TV people,

It was real good. You’re in for a treat.

AND RIMMER’S HAIR IS BROWN FINALLY. HAHAHAHAH, SUCK ON SPOILERS, YOU CUNTBUCKETS.

    Sincerely,
Ms. KyoSo van der Rimmer (deceased, taken out by G&T Spoiler Squad Agent Symes)

  5. I believe I may be the only person here watching on Dave pace. (And even then, not entirely by choice.)

  6. I think I’ll switch to Dave pace for the final episode, just to make the series last a little longer.

  7. I’d really much rather take the TV pace, especially since I can get it in HD, but I just cannot sit around for week while a new episode of Red Dwarf sits there online with nothing stopping me from watching it. I can’t help it, I’m not made of concrete.

    Ah! Gotcha.

(ETA: Looks like UKTVPlay are really going to wait to release Samsara online… was really hoping for early doors…boo.)

  9. I’ll have a re-watch of Twentica tonight ont’elly, watch Samsara after and some other shows I’ve recorded I think then come back and read everyones thoughts. Hopefully I find tonight’s episode more enjoyable than Twentica.

There must be some mistake, pad_ehh, ‘Listen to G&T’s live DwarfCast’ doesn’t seem to be part of your plan…

  11. Hello those of you on the other side of time dilation in a compressed fandom, its been 300 years for us on the UKTVPLAY side and some of the impatient pricks among our number have worn out the worry balls moaning about kryten related things i cant minor spoiler you with yet. But I can still type my robot arm and well my toe nails and hair are no different on this side they are still all unkempt and Skraggy. Enjoy tonight in HD land. I hope doug put extra jokes between some of HD dots. When you allow yourself to read the great guest star interview on here you will notice they and their kind are watching tonight with you, so please feel superior for waiting. I look forward to arguing with you or nodding at my screen going “the bloke knows hi onions” later tonight. I urge you then to go back and read the now safe UKTVPLAY Twentica threads, please read in order of post to enjoy what unfolded their including the best ever use of a meat loaf song on the entire internet.

Cwickham , you wanted to know what happens to you in the world where you had another choice …. Well.. ….

  12. I’ve been waiting for the Dave one, but I’m thinking of jizzing through the others online. Depends.
If they’re good, I’ll wait. But last series I found the comments and debates as much fun as the shows themselves.
    Feel left out…
Don’t cry for me: I’m already dead. Inside.

    So, what is it?

Completely agree! I didn’t fully realize until last week just how much this would piss me off and be incredibly difficult. I originally decided to hold out until broadcast. I thought it wouldn’t be especially difficult for Twentica since I’ve already been to a preview screening. But seeing all the fans thoughts and reactions pop up online, and the reviews and threads straight away from those who watched at a UKTV pace, it just hit home how bloody difficult and heartbreaking this will be, and how nobody can really win here – no matter what you do, you’ll still feel like you’re missing out on something in some way. In the end, I watched again (in SD) on Saturday night and now the HD broadcast tonight will be my third time. Straight after that, I have over 300 comments to catch up on and the reviews (I like to watch the ep at least 3 times before reading reviews and other people’s thoughts – one of my nutty OCD quirks, I guess), so I also didn’t realize how this will make what should be a completely joyful experience almost feel like work.

In the end, I’ve decided I’ll watch the latest episode on UKTV Play (in SD) once and then wait for the broadcast. Not exactly how I want to do it but I can’t really bare the thought of missing out on a new episode of Red Dwarf, and I realize avoiding spoilers until broadcast will be next to impossible. I hope I don’t sound like a moany, spoiled child – it *really* shouldn’t feel like a bad thing to have a new episode of Red Dwarf to watch early. I’m just gutted this can’t be a shared experience watching new Red Dwarf at the same time on telly. For me, that really was a big part of the joy of watching Series X for the first time.

Anyway, I don’t want this post to be overly negative (and too long) so I’ll end it by saying that I’m still bloody excited the broadcast is finally here and it really has brightened up what’s been a pretty shit week :oD

  15. Feeling your pain Stephen, I think everyone is :(

  16. I wonder if the UKTV app counts towards the viewing figures..

It’s good to see the episode has had a lot of positive reviews in general. I guess spending too much time in these forums you sometimes feel everyone is so critical and picky .

  17. I was sad that I would be missing out on the broadcast experience with series XI because that was a big part of what made X feel so special. I guess X was it’s own thing and XI is it’s own thing. Looking forward to the live Dwarf Cast!

  18. I have no access to Dave the TV station anyway but one good thing to come out of moving to America is that I get to tune in to the Dwarf Cast at 4pm.

  19. I think we can all hope UKTV try a different strategy next time. :)

  20. this is the thread for all those of you that have resisted the temptation to watch online over the last seven days (Are there any of you? Show of hands…)

Me. In significant part because (in 2016!) the UKTV website told me to install Flash to watch it. I told it to fuck off.

  21. “A Mars bar *living* in Scotland”?

    Nah.

  22. My position is “nah”. I cannot budge on this.

  23. I might budge on it. There weren’t many jokes worthy of the name. As horrible and, quite frankly, -ist as that one was, it was a joke.

  24. Oh I didn’t think it was offensive. Just a lame joke, poorly-worded. I liked the episode generally.

  25. The full version of Cash could have been as big as Happy Monday’s.

  26. (Listening to live Dwarfcast future readers)

  27. Samsara available from tomorrow according to Dave. So nothing to distract from the Dwarfcast at least!

  28. Tomorrow?? That’s been the light at the end of my tunnel all day!

  29. I hope Dave keep pushing it back until the web premiere takes place alongside the telly broadcast.

Serves you all right, you greedy, greedy goits.

  30. Fucking cunty bollocks. No Samsara tonight?

I came home from the pub for nothing.

  31. Twentica is available on UKTV Play 7 days before broadcast, but Samsara only 6?! It’s like Dave were trying to cause me tea time disappointment today!

Luckily I saved myself by watching Back To Reality instead. Still great.

  32. Is that the first time that *that* music was used with a (model) shot of Starbug?

  33. Is that the first time that *that* music was used with a (model) shot of Starbug?

I wondered that, too. Pretty sure it is.

I have to admit I don’t like hearing *that* music over a Starbug model shot. Just doesn’t feel right to me.

  34. After the online release I nitpicked the idea that Edison (born 1847) is said to still be alive in the ’50s. Now it’s time for some more nitpicking of dates!

What decade do you think the Exponoids travelled back to in order to begin their history meddling?

Based on the fashions, and cutoff point for prohibited technology, and the fact that Harmony knows what relativity and the Copenhagen interpretation are, you might assume that it was the ’20s.

And yet… it’s mentioned that in this timeline, the Exponoids stopped Einstein from ever achieving anything. Which means they must have gone back and begun interfering before 1905.

Why, it’s almost as if the excuses to have a rapid-fire stream of science jokes took higher priority than strict adherence to a consistent speculative alternate timeline!

  35. I would have dropped the brace joke and the human blood joke.

  36. UK tv play can go fack off

  37. So when is Samsara coming out then? Sometime today?

  38. I’ve read that Twentica got a 710k overnight for Dave last night. Don’t know if that includes Dave ja vu or not.

  39. The first Dwarf series to premiere at under a million, but we all saw this coming and UKTV clearly have their eyes on a different prize.

  40. From the digitalspy ratings thread:

Thursday Top 10 (inc. +1) (not including the five main channels)

    1 ITV2 – 10:00 PM Celebrity Juice 817k 5.6%
    2 Dave – 09:00 PM Red Dwarf XI 810k 4.2%
    3 E4 – 07:00 PM Hollyoaks 712k 4.1%
    4 ITV2 – 10:50 PM Family Guy 536k 5.3%
    5 ITV2 – 11:20 PM Family Guy 501k 6.5%

  41. Anyone with a Sky box who (a) likes Red Dwarf, (b) pressed TV Guide last Thursday and (c) doesn’t suffer extreme myopia can be discounted from that figure as it filled about a quarter of the home screen.

  42. G&T Admin

Extremely good figures for non-“terrestrial”. Phenomenally good figures for Dave. Poor figures for a Red Dwarf series premiere. But then, that’s what happens when you put the episode online a week in advance – it wasn’t just the hardcorest of hardcore fans who watched online, an awful lot of casual/lapsed/non-fandomy fans did so too, and they’re not likely to also make an appointment to watch on linear broadcast.

Basically, in the space year 2016, overnight viewing figures bear very little relation to how many people have actually watched (or will actually watch) the episode at the best of times, and that seems to be especially true in Red Dwarf XI’s case. I doubt anyone important will be too disappointed by the figures – it would have been nice to top a million, but for UKTV, the boost that it’s given their on demand service will have been worth the hit the overnights have taken.

  43. I’d wager that a genuine percentage of those who watched it early weren’t even aware that it hadn’t already been on linear TV.

  44. I wonder if UKTV will release any figures for online views.

  45. I’ve done a more in depth analysis if the ratings on Gazpacho Soup if you are that way inclined to read ramblings about ratings. But whilst the figure is a little disappointing, it is still good in context. Just not great like BTE and Series X.

The overnight of 810k is down on The Beginning which was 975k but they both achieved a share of 4.2%.

Though you can’t rely on catch up viewers. Advertisers are key (even shit betting advertisers and vaginal tests advertisers) and they care more about overnights than catch up viewers. Catch up viewers tend to fast forward through the adverts.

Of course UKTV Play has adverts so that will play a part in how successful it is. It is unlikely they will release specified figures for each episode but if Dwarf does very well for UKTV Play then they will no doubt release a press release about the success of UKTV Play.

  46. The Thursday 9pm slot gets quite competitive in the next few weeks with The Apprentice and The Fall, so I can see more people going for UKTV Play pace.

  47. I just think it’s cool that my comment got read on the Dwarfcast, even better because they mispronounced my name. I was unreasonably amused by that.

(It’s Kee-oh-soh, for the record. Japanesey pronunciation, because I’m a filthy-ass weeb girl and I’m proud of it.)

  48. Not only that but you can record telly these days so people may have put it on record and watched it at a later date. I hope they take into account the app views etc. Being on there a week early meant some people may not have needed to rematch it on Dave. Taking that into account I think that’s a great rating. At least in this day and age.

  49. If anything, how successful it is on UKTV Play may be just as important as on Dave. They seem to really want to use Red Dwarf to push people to the UKTV Play service.

You can certainly bet that those viewers won’t be forgotten. And also remember that when us fanatics watch it many times, each individual view is counted as we are watching the adverts each time.

Noted for future reference, sorry about that!

  51. The consolidated figure for Twentica was 1.38m – I presume that number doesn’t include anyone who watched in advance. This is a very good figure indeed, as it was narrowly the most watched multichannel program all week.

  52. Thinking of Kevin Eldon saying ‘no one said we couldn’t have a little fun along the way’ always makes me laugh!
