Red Dwarf XI: The Game - Samsara Playthrough featured image

Even after Red Dwarf XI has long since been broadcast, the mobile game that first launched alongside Twentica continues to recieve attention, with the first big content update in the shape of the Samsara episode being released last week. I decided to play through the lot and record my thoughts as I went, which might be of questionable worth but at least it’s better than reading any form of news site or social media right now.

My thoughts on the game are still pretty well reflected in what I wrote back when I recorded the first video, so it’s worth checking that out if you haven’t already and I’ll keep my summary here brief. On balance I had fun with the update but I think it suffers from feeling a bit sparse. The reuse of mechanics is entirely understandable, and the episode itself is one that must be difficult to build mini-games around, but the reduction in games from Twentica is very noticable so I’m hoping in the future we can see some fresh ideas to complement the increasingly improved mechanics we’re seeing with every new update – specifically in this case the Starbug levels. As it stands, though, I’m happy with this as a bottle release for the series’ bottle episode, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s to come.

  • This episode was a lot shorter than the previous one, which I don’t mind as long as it means we get the next one quicker. I would quite like to see some 2D platform sections. Think action/collect (mario), or stealth or puzzle (push blocks etc).

Yes., I think this pretty much sums it up. Oh, for some actual replay value.

  • This is great to see, Jonathan. Thanks so much for putting this together!

As with the previous video, we’ll be going through it in more detail and will be making marked improvements to the game as well as carrying forward comments for the Give & Take update too.

What’s really refreshing with this (and something that is very often missed in other reviews) is that the playthrough not only deals with the game side, but also the back story about the external constraints on the game and what we’re ultimately trying to achieve with it. It’s amazing how switched on you are regarding that, and we appreciate the understanding of what’s going on behind the scenes and how we plan to improve the game given players feedback. Ultimately, we’re making the game for you guys – so it makes sense that you guys have a big say in it!

As you rightly pointed out, the emulator certainly didn’t help with some of the sections, especially in the underwater parts. Just as an off chance, try pressing ‘Space’ on the keyboard and see if you can fire while moving the ship around – it may help for future videos.

  • Hah, excellent!

And thank you, Ian, I’m glad the bit at the end didn’t end up just being a mis-informed barrage of ramblings.

Oh and I’m away from home ahe moment but I will try this at the earliest opportunity. Life changing if true.

  • I tried to record a play through a few days ago but when I came to watch it back all the audio had gone out of sync on it. Might have another go with a different app.

  • What are you using? If you’ve got an Nvidia card then there’s nothing better than Shadowplay but previously I’ve actually had a fair bit of success with OBS, despite it primarilly being a streaming program.

  • I recorded it on my phone using an app called Mobizen which records the audio through the mic. It sounds fine but as the video goes on it gets more and more out of sync.

  • Yeah I looked at recording from the mobile, but I couldn’t find anything that I could get working as I needed. If you have a sync problem, can you chose to not record from your mic and then record your audio on a laptop or PC using Audacity so you can perfectly sync it in an edit?

I did consider that. I’ll have another play with it at some point.
