The ‘Marchwood’ lake is right next to my dad’s house. How did I not know this before? I have to visit. It’s also about two blocks from where Southampton Football Club trains (/fact).

Actualy, could I ask those who entered the competition how they found their answers? I’m just intrigued as to your methods, I want to see if they were similar to how I found the questions.

For me it was mostly just comparing the pictures with the aerial shots, and checking to see if there was something I recognized. That and a certain amount of guesswork.

I also compared the outside building with decor inside (although granted the latter would have been altered to some extent but with places like hotels it makes sense.)

Considering I came mid-way in score (amongst the other entered) I guess that was so-so.

I did a bit of research for one question, but should have done more really.

I used a mixture of what I knew, the “section formerly known as Time Hole” on TOS and the commentaries/documentaries to find it out. I used what could probably be described as a double blind method of sorts.

From the above sources I produced a list of locations for each of the numbers - ie the pictures from the show - even if that was just “Quarry near Rhyl” or “Training Lake, Hampshire”.

Then I would use this list to search for the locations on Google Maps, Microsoft Live Maps and Google Images. For example, I looked up Piccadilly Hotel, Manchester and the image matched exactly the one, so I recorded the details (K - Jarvis Piccadilly (Match Google Maps)).

In other cases, for example Marco Polo House, where the building is not very distinct on the mapping services, I cross referenced with Flickr and Google Images to ensure it was the right building, matching the brickwork, shapes etc. (M - Marco Polo House (Match Google Maps, Flickr))

For the quarry, I found the Rhyl image, and typed “Quarry” into Google. Then I went through them all until the pictures matched.

Then I put it all back together, and did a sanity check.

Easy!

When I said easy, I was being kind of sarcastic. It did take, over all, probably 3 or 4 hours to do.

I spotted a few of them straight off from what I already knew (Rhyl, the quarry, Laredo, the Tank, Xanadu, the hangar from Pete). Three of the buildings were obviously the Manchester hotels, and I could remember 2 of them, so that was easy to check.

The only indoor locations left were those for Legion and Quarantine - I had a good idea which one was used for Legion, but wasn’t 100% sure. For some unknown reason I couldn’t locate Sunbury Pumping Station on a map, so (I think) I got the location for Legion from the commentary, and eliminated them that way. The building for Tikka was easy to make out from the photo, as was the location for SMAC.

I spent ages searching for the lake in Beyond a Joke, but couldn’t pin it down. I figured that the lake in Backwards had to be pretty near to Manchester, and then I on a hunch I searched the site and found this thread http://www.ganymede.tv/atspeed/2005/01/where-is-that-park, which also confirmed my guess for Xanadu.

The only one left had to be the location for the JFK assassination.

Yes. The location subsequently appeared on Time Hole. IIRC someone asked Mr Ellard at the time for details of the location.
