They Don't Walk Among Us Any More

Want to get yourself down to Richmond-based comic shop They Walk Among Us for some Back to Earth-related location spotting, photo-taking and annoying the staff by standing in the shop loudly quoting the scene with NotMarkBenton? You’d better hurry up, then, because according to comics goss site Bleeding Cool, it’s closing down.

Now, if you’re (a) a Richmond resident, (b) a comics fan and (c) too lazy to get on the tube to Central London’s Square Mile of comic shops, then you might be worried at this point about where you’re going to buy Grant Morrison’s Batman & Robin from now on - but fear not, because as Rich Johnston (who also appears to have nicked G&T reader danwatts’ photo for his own nefarious purposes) reports, it’s being bought up and rebranded by a medium-sized chain called Ace Comics. But it’s still a shame to see one of London’s (indeed, the UK’s) most famous independent shops disappear. And, perhaps of more relevance to You Lot, that so soon after the making of Back to Earth, one of its most identifiable visuals will no longer exist.

That’s what featuring in Red Dwarf does to you.

Bah, who cares. Red Dwarf itself no longer exists, only on a computer.

Does this really count as “closing down”? It’s being taken over, yes, but it’s still going to be a comic shop - it’s not as if it’s going to become a Subway/Poundland/pawnshop, or just lie empty.

From the current owners point of view, yes.

From the consumers point of view, probably not. Unless they change their stock, etc.

Of course technically it’s not the shop Spaced filmed in…

Well… yes. It’s not the same shop, it’s not owned by the same people. It’s going from being an independent shop to being part of a chain. Yeah, it’ll still sell comics, and yeah, it’ll probably still be decent. But “They Walk Among Us” is, in fact, closing down.

And from a Dwarf fan’s point of view, the fact that it’ll have a different name and look and layout will of course be entirely relevant.

Of course technically it’s not the shop Spaced filmed in…

The word Spaced has not been written on this page before you said it!

I would’ve liked to go there and take a holiday snapshot. In October. Oh well.
