DwarfCast 17 - White Hole Commentary

DwarfCasts from Ganymede & Titan“So what is it?” “I’ve never seen one before, no-one has, but I’m guessing it’s a Dwarfcast.” “A *Dwarf* cast?” “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. A podcast sucks drunken incomprehensible blathering out of the universe: a Dwarfcast returns it.” “So these people are spewing shite back into the universe?” “Precisely.”

DwarfCast 17 - White Hole Commentary (25.1MB)

So this is basically the equivalent of the Craig Charles-less cast commentaries, because we were without Ian Symes, who hadn’t turned up for some reason. Probably because he’s a twat. However, making up for that, the Dwarfcasts are graced for the first time by the chunky Yorkshire tones of Danny Stephenson, who joins John Hoare, Tanya Jones and myself, Seb Patrick, to talk about an episode with which he has a particular connection. What is it? You’ll have to listen and find out, won’t you?

And yes, for the record, before anyone points it out, I am now aware that Paul Robeson was American, and also not just a singer. ALRIGHT?

I just want to say one thing, re: egg and hairdryer.

It doesn’t work.

I also just want to say one thing…

Would anyone like any toast?

Re: Dollarpound and Quid.

Why shouldn’t quid be a slang term for a $£?

Danny Stephenson / Thu, 2009-03-05 19:20 / #

Well in the books it’s Quidbuck, so it’s still not right.

> Quidbuck

Actually ‘Buckquid’ (same way around as ‘dollarpound’), but I’d accept both ‘a million bucks’ and ‘twenty quid’ as reasonable truncations for $£ since the language habits would likely stick, and since it’s not like anyone would think ‘ah, you mean the OLD dollars, not the lovely new dollarpounds we have now’. I imagine European countries are still using all kinds of region-specific money slang despite the switch to the Euro.

Hey, just wanted to say…I’ve listened to all the DwarfCasts recently (Ever been really, really bored?) and I have to say that, while they’re all funny and interesting, they’re all rather quiet. I have to turn the volume up a lot before I can comfortably listen to them, and what makes matters worse is in the early Dimension Jump commentaries the clips of Chris Barrie are at normal volume, meaning I suddenly get an ear-splitting burst of Kenneth Williams and hysterical audience laughter. Would it be possible to pump up the volume, pump up the volume, pump up the volume, dance, dance, for future DwarfCasts?

Yeah, sound quality’s been a bit of an issue, especially with the more recent ones. We also have the tradeoff of not wanting to boost it too loud, because then you can hear the episode (and we need to be able to faintly hear the episode, at least). We’ll see what we can do for the next one, particularly if we can get a better mic situation sorted out rather than just huddling round my laptop as the last few were.

Headphones, man. HEADPHONES!!!

Have you ever tried to get five people to wear headphones for the same thing? Also, if we were wearing headphones, surely we couldn’t hear one-another?

Bear in mind we don’t have a recording studio - we’re a real mickey mouse operation. Like I say, it’s a bunch of us huddled round a laptop in someone’s living room. With booze. Any attempt to make it more professional would kill the atmosphere.

Fear not, we have my tiny yet surprisingly effective mic all set for future ‘Casts, and we’ve now moved to higher quality MP3s, so it should be easier to get the volume right.

Plus, we probably wont have the problem of the episode playing in the background in the next few…

Hey, just noticed another Dollarpound reference - in The Last Day, when Rimmer is talking about whatsisname’s sinal fluid. I have a feeling there are more in III and IV, I’ll listen out next time I watch them.

> Have you ever tried to get five people to wear headphones for the same thing? Also, if we were wearing headphones, surely we couldn’t hear one-another?

Well, to be low-rent and practical for a moment: get four two-way headphone jack splitters (not expensive) and five sets of cheapo earbuds. Only need those in one ear to keep track.

> Any attempt to make it more professional would kill the atmosphere.

I agree mostly yet disagree slightly, since you and Cappsy are both talking about improving the situation, doing better with the quality, etc. There’s clearly a desire - and willingness - to improve, which suggests you feel there’s a mid-point to be reached between the ‘just do it’ atmosphere and the ‘make it good’ tech stuff. A suggestion such as ‘headphones’ isn’t necessarily all that bad for the atmos.

>Plus, we probably wont have the problem of the episode playing in the background in the next few…

Unfortunately, this also gives us free reign to talk for more than half an hour. OH DEAR.

(then again, it also means we can actually edit the bastard things, so swings and roundabouts)

Hey, I downloaded all the DwarfCasts to listen to while I work, and something’s happened to the White Hole MP3 - it’s cut short and it’s only five minutes long. It cuts off after John talks about on the “Ion Storm” line.

Ah, bugger. Not sure what’s happened there as it was fine when it first went up… Will fix it tomorrow.

That ion storm talk really did its head in, man.

I think we’ve encountered this period of time before.

I had a text from my brother yesterday asking if I knew anything about Scuttercast, apparently it had been mentioned the Cadmium 2 Sci-Fi podcast…

Robmods / Mon, 2009-05-25 21:55 / #

I’m afraid that I’m still being denied the comic genius lurking within this Cast…

I just was going to listen to the ”White Hole” commentary & it’s still not fixed! Any news on when the full version is going to be available again, as it’s still just the 5-minute version available on ”iTunes” & on here too.

Jonathan Capps / Mon, 2009-11-23 14:08 / #

That’s great, I’ve just re-downloaded it from here & it’s the full version again! But, it’s still only the 5-minute one on ”iTunes” though…

Hmm, well iTunes gets it from the same place so it should update soon enough.

I’m happy to report that the ”iTunes” version is the full version again, which is good news! I’ve really enjoyed the DwarfCast commentaries so far, is there any chance of more in the future? I would love to hear ones for any of the following: ”The End”, ”Gunmen Of The Apacolypse” ”Stoke Me A Clipper”, ”Duct Soup” (Xtended), ”Back In The Red” (The full DVD version), ”Back To Earth” (The Director’s Cut) & any of the Series 1 - 3 Remastered episodes.

One is for Cassandra, which was wretched experience, and a more lively one for Backwards that had to keep stopping and starting due to Seb’s doorbell constantly going off.
