Ungrateful Bastards News Posted by John Hoare on 30th July 2005, 19:02 So, following the excellent latest TOS merchandise news – what stuff would you like to see, that hasn’t been announced? I’d go for for a London Jets T-shirt or poster – I’m surprised neither has been done (officially)…
Hollister’s Red Dwarf snowglobe. Or just a miniature of the Dwarf that doesn’t look like a red pencil. One of those mirrors that can also play videos. And a remote-control Scutter (original version), obviously.
As I said on that original post, a London Jets t-shirt (hmm, must get back to work on the Paint Shop tracing of it I was making) and a square-bottomed JMC tie would be fine and dandy like cotton candy. Remote-controlled skutter would also be a FANTASTIC idea. Surely the people who do the RC Daleks could knock one of those up with the minimum of fuss. And, despite having made my own, I’d dearly love a compilation CD of Goodall’s finest music cues; but I understand that rights issues render this a near-impossibility. Shame.
> And, despite having made my own, I’d dearly love a compilation CD of Goodall’s finest music cues; but I understand that rights issues render this a near-impossibility. Shame. Is that the case? It hasn’t occured to me that there’d be rights issues. If they can be released on a DVD, surely a CD would be fairly easy?
Odd, isn’t it, how a DVD release can include anything you want of Dwarf’s music, but you can’t have a CD due to rights issues? Just goes to show that whilst rights are obviously important, the details can result in ludicrous situations like this. But making your own is an excellent idea. I must do one so me and Tanya can stick it in the car. Along with the TV jingles CD that we already have. Ahem.
> Is that the case? It hasn’t occured to me that there’d be rights issues. If they can be released on a DVD, surely a CD would be fairly easy? No, there *definitely* are issues. I’ve read it in several places – can’t remember where, mind you. DVD and CD releases have different rights issues attached to them. Fuck knows *why*, though. All historical, I suppose.
I definitely read something to that effect in an article regarding Spaced…they got clearance for all but one song from the show to be on the DVDs, but there were MANY songs which they couldn’t get the rights to include on the soundtrack CD.
> I definitely read something to that effect in an article regarding Spaced…they got clearance for all but one song from the show to be on the DVDs, but there were MANY songs which they couldn’t get the rights to include on the soundtrack CD. That’s a bit different, though – Spaced’s soundtrack is comprised of existing songs. Dwarf’s is all specially comissioned, and written by the same composer.
Maybe it’s issues like the Androids theme, It was stated on one of the documentaries that they might not get away with something like that now. Also I guess it’s not just the composer they’d have to worry about, they’d have to pay royalties to all the performers as it would be a separate use of the music, and I would assume that all the existing rights tie into the programme, rather than any other use. As for Red Dwarf related products it would have to be marijuana gin, especially as cannabis vodka is awful.
Firstly, I wouldn’t be bothered about things like the Androids theme. I just mean the best instrumental cues of those featured on the DVDs. Secondly, performers don’t get paid royalties. At all. Ever.
