Just in the middle of watching this again. And I know I said so at the time, but it needs repeating just how excellent it is. It doesn’t hurt that it’s such a great story to start with, but it’s told by everyone so well (particularly Doug and Llewellyn), and edited so perfectly, it’s definitely my favourite extra on any of the DVDs – of newly produced stuff, anyway. I just love the way Doug comes across as so intelligent, amusing, and… likeable.

And this is before I start on tonight’s Bailey’s Frenzy.

What, better than A Life In Lame? You’re joking, right?

Er seriously, it is a GREAT extra. I like it when the extras surprise me by telling me something I didn’t actually know. The frankness of this and the main series docos (particularly VII) is pretty refreshing. Doug’s so blunt sometimes it’s brilliant.

  • Yeah. This is what pisses me off so much about some people saying the doccos were sanatised – they clearly aren’t. And it’s especially hilarious the way Craig says something, and they immediately cut to Doug contradicting him.

Doug is great. The one tragedy of the Movie taking so long to get off the ground is the fact that we’re being deprived of his comedy writing. Even his message to DJ a couple of years back was hilarious – the whole room was just in hysterics.

Couldn’t agree more: compared to most DVD doccos, Red Dwarf’s are incredibly frank. I mean staying with Series 5 as an example, no-one is going to come right out and say Juliet May was atrocious at directing, but they will point to numerous difficulties (eg POV) and leave the (hopefully) intelligent viewer to draw their own conclusions. This does not qualify for me as ‘sanitizing’ the information, like the Fischer docco on Aliens III for instance.

Oh and Dwarfing USA is absolutely brilliant. My favourite moment: Llewellyn describing the idiots in suits who are paid to laugh at utter crap. An apt summary of the entire moronic American TV culture…

    Don’t mince your words.

  • Don’t get me wrong – American TV has produced some real comedy gems over the years, such as Cheers, Seinfeld and Frasier which I enjoyed thoroughly, but far more often than not the sound of canned laughter to absolute garbage permeates the prime time viewing hours of 8:00-10:00pm.

    Trust me, I know – I live here…

Yeah, but the crowd at DJ will usually laugh at anything that’s said on stage. Personally, I think it would’ve been a lot funnier if Andrew Ellard had caught fire. Think about it.

Which DVD is Dwarfing USA on?

    What do you think, Andrew?
