John’s Newsround – 6/3/06 News Posted by John Hoare on 6th March 2006, 00:00 Pffft. February 19th being the last proper update? Pathetic. I do apologise for being very late with this – I’ve been busy, but that’s NO EXCUSE. I am clearly a very bad boy. VIII CHAPTER POINTS: Yes, me and Ian are one of only four people who enjoy these articles. Personally, I’m just ridiculously excited that I’ll finally be able to jump straight to the Blue Midget dance sequence. And yes, well done on all the Captain’s Office chapter points. Interestingly enough, on the Webboard, Andrew has reiterated that a release of the Re-mastered series is “a possibility”, and that “Discussions for the future of GNP and DVD are currently taking place, and we should have some news for you very, very soon.” EXCITEMENT. And he’s found an easter egg on the upcoming Maid Marian DVD. Ooooh. BTL50 PUBLISHED: Nice logo. You wouldn’t believe how much the previous Comic Sans one irritated me – the new one is much better. Other than that, there’s explanations for the seven month delay, which I would take the piss out of, but unfortunately I promised a relaunch of G&T a year ago. FLIBBLE & HEADKNOCKERS AVAILABLE AT RDSUK: That is all. And, indeed, that’s your lot. God, I really should get round to doing some proper interviews or articles to offset the embarassment of late, poorly-written Newsrounds, shouldn’t I?
“Personally, I’m just ridiculously excited that I’ll finally be able to jump straight to the Blue Midget dance sequence.” Aren’t we all.
Whats happened to our beloved red dwarf??? The final dvddetails was posted on tos today, and here…not a sausage. It seems to me that we are all giving up hope, the film looks doubtfull and ix is even more doubtfull. I just hope the alternate ending to only the good’ is enough to end it. will we get what we want?
I think *we’re* just all a bit busy. I would have posted something over on OD, but the Newsround is G&T’s department.
> The final dvddetails was posted on tos today, and here…not a sausage. Maybe, just maybe, we’re saving our dissection of the deleted scenes for the full DVD review, which should be coming by the start of next week…
With the DVD run coming to an end, it does make me wonder what the future holds. We all know there’s a few irons in the fire, and there have been hints that we havn’t seen the last of ‘Dwarf’ in DVD format. Clearly, ‘they’ will get the last inch out of the franchise and I live in hope the movie will happen, but it will all have to grind to halt at some stage. I think the next few months are all important to the GNP empire. I suspect they have plans up their sleeves but it’s going to be interesting to see which way it will all go, time will tell etc.
They’ll probably do Just The Shows vol 2 (ie Series V-VIII), then maybe Remastered on DVD, just a single 3-disc set, no extras, apart from that promotional trailer. And the broadcast version of The End Remastered, which had an extra ‘Bing-bong’. Know what I’m talking about? I’m not sure I do. Basically, the version of The End Remastered, which was premiered on BBC2 the night before Red Dwarf Night back in 1998, was slightly different to the one that was subsequently shown and released on video the following week. In one of them (don’t ask me which, I’ve not watched them for a long time, though I expect Symes or someone has done an article on this somewhere on G&T), there is a ‘bing-bong’ sound effect, while in the other, Holly simply says ‘Bing-bong’. Er, so, yeah.
>They’ll probably do Just The Shows vol 2 (ie Series V-VIII), then maybe Remastered on DVD, just a single 3-disc set, no extras, apart from that promotional trailer I think Andrew mentioned previously that one of the main ideas behind releasing the remastered series was to include brand new episode by episode documentaries for series 1 and 2, which didn’t receive that treatment in the original run of DVD’s. Plus, they would have to have some sort of docco explaining why the remastered project took place at all and how it was decided what to add in or take out. (and personally I still hold out hope that some or all of that rejected script for Series 1 that involved Rimmer stealing bits of Lister will see the light of day – maybe Rob has one tucked away somewhere…)
“they would have to have some sort of docco explaining why the remastered project took place at all” Yes. We’d all like to know.

Er, so, yeah. There are two “bing-bong”s. The first one, for George McIntyre’s welcome back reception is a sound effect. The second one, for the engineer’s exam, is Holly saying “bing-bong”. Hope I helped you.
What they could do for the remastered series is four discs – either in a boxset or an oddly wide DVD case – with one disc for each series and one disc for bonus extras. Three documentaries (for Series 1, 2 and the remastered eps) of around the length of “Heavy Science” et. al. would be somewhere between 3.5 and 4 hours, so maybe some extras (e.g. trailer, raw CG, music cues) could be shared around onto the series discs.
I would also love for the script for the unmade Series 1 ep to be included on a release somewhere. Although I’m still holding out for a really good scriptbook, with loads of new stuff…
How about having commentaries from the crew for the remastereds, rather than the cast? They’d have more to say, after all.
Good point Antipodean. The one gripe I had with the series 1 DVD when it came out was that the additional commentary turned out to be the six of the best overview plonked onto The End, rather than something newly recorded and responding to the episode. A retrospective technical/production commentary on the remastereds might just tip me over into buying the set.
>How about having commentaries from the crew for the remastereds, rather than the cast? They’d have more to say, after all. I suggest remastering the original commentaries with some library whooshy noises and computer beeps that are mixed improperly and make it impossible to hear what’s being said. A constant whirring machine would also be unnecessary. Nothing would capture the spirit of the Remastered eps better than that.
I actually liked *some* of the changes to remastered. I thought the background rumble sound was really effective, and some of the edits were for the better (on Better than Life with the mermaid, for example). I also thought some of the new music was good (not being fond of the original Cat entrance music). I liked the Polymorph CGI through the tunnels and things like the lift-shaft sequences. A version of field-removed video could have worked. Just on the whole they wouldn’t then leave it alone, they had to go further and add CG skutters making stupid noises, extra people to the funeral scene and change whole swathes of Holly’s dialogue. Oh but look I’m talking about remastereds again rather than the potential DVD release. Let’s all slag off series VII and VIII!!!!!!!!!!1
Did a search for Red Dwarf on video.google.com and found this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-583305533324426853&q=red+dwarf
