DVD Roundup – 9/5/06 News Posted by John Hoare on 9th May 2006, 01:28 Lots going on for a show that’s just released its last series on DVD. The USA has just had VIII; meanwhile, the Czech Republic has just had Series V. Obviously they’re selling well enough to carry on releasing them over there; let’s hope they get a release with full extras as well at some point. TOS has also published its usual roundup of DVD reviews – I have to say that much as I love the show, GQ’s comment that it’s “The most underrated British comedy of the past 20 years” seems slightly weird when you consider the viewing figures and DVD sales – but presumably it’s just another way of complaining about how snobby some people get about the series, and how some other shows get more than their fair share of column inches – which is fair enough. All I can say about the snippets from my review is I’m appalled they didn’t use the quote I especially gave them to use at the end. The main news, however, is more stuff on Beat the Geek. And it’s something I should have guessed from the odd hint given on the Webboard – Norm and Hattie as Holly are the quizmasters! I recall that at one point we had a bit of an agenda (what? Us?) with Hattie seemingly having been forgotten in favour of Norm – but that’s obviously well and truly disappeared. As has been said, though – Hattie is looking a lot like Linda Smith these days. Well, not how Linda Smith looks now, obviously. Oh, and the menus look awesome. This release cannot come soon enough. Should be an article up later tonight – as I can’t really do the redesign until I leave makro at the end of the month, I might as well try and do something useful round here…
Welcome back G&T! > Oh, and the menus look awesome. This release cannot come soon enough. Gonna have to stop this misconception before it goes any further. Those screens are the DVD menus from the various series and very much NOT the game graphics. (The clues are many, including obvious chapter selection numbers in the captain’s office and, well, the fact that YOU’VE SEEN ALL THESE SHOTS BEFORE.) They’re just there to show what Deluxe can do. Still, the ACTUAL screens look amazing – really dynamic. Expect updates in the fullness of time.
>Hattie is looking a lot like Linda Smith these days. Well, not how Linda Smith looks now, obviously. Even for you guys, I think that’s a bit off.
I meant “look” as in the idea – not the screenshots. But I should have been a lot clearer and less confusing. You expect me to write competently at 2:28am? As for Linda Smith… I’m aware it’s borderline, but I thought it was funny enough to get away with it, rather than just being tasteless for its own sake. Depends where you draw the line, really.
Well, my mum was absolutely convinced Linda Smith had played the female Holly until I got the cast list off a website…
Hattie had her hair cut on the premise that she disn’t think she would do Red Dwarf again, and to be honest to keep her hair like that for this amount of time is a bit amazing..It’s always the same no Red Dwarf for years, you get your Holly hair cut and 3 come along at once!
> Well, my mum was absolutely convinced Linda Smith had played the female Holly until I got the cast list off a website… I’m always a bit baffled about this – one time when Linda Smith was being funny on telly, my mum asked who it was and my dad answered “Holly off Red Dwarf”. I assumed it was just memory playing tricks because they’d not seen any Hattie Dwarf for maybe 10 years, but no. People will insist that THEY HAVE BEEN THE SAME PERSON. > Hattie’s hair looks shit. Hattie’s hair is shit. A computer would never have hair like that. It’s funny how Norm’s Holly has come off the more timeless of the two. That look of bewilderment he’s doing in that photo is fantastic.
