DwarfCast 6 – The Inquisitor Commentary DwarfCasts Posted by Jonathan Capps on 10th December 2006, 18:42 Subscribe to DwarfCasts: RSS • iTunes Since we were a week late with the last DwarfCast, we thought we’d give you another this week in an attempt to a) punish you and b) to detract away from the fact we’re not publishing a proper article on something interesting this weekend. DwarfCast 6 – The Inquisitor Commentary (6.7MB) And here it is, an episode from the ever-excellent series V gets the DwarfCasts commentary treatment, namely The Inquisitor. In attendance are Ian, Seb and myself (you’ll start to notice that there’s a pattern to this – i.e. I’m in every single one of the fuckers). With regards to the odd Craig Charles comment, this commentary was recorded a good while ago (pre-DJ) and Craig was very much still on our minds in quite an unfavourable way, thus you’re bound to hear the odd dig here and there regarding crack and what not. It’s worth mentioning that we’re all delighted that Craig’s back on track and even more delighted at how he conducted himself at DJ so some of our comments are bound to be a little… dated.
umm… yeah… really good. Especially that bit where you… talked… about the show. I haven’t downloaded it.
I think I’m going to prefer the commentaries to episodes I don’t like, judging by the ones you’ve done so far.
Excellent! I really enjoyed that, and yes – I listened to this along with the DVDs. Far better than the cast commentaries, who largely don’t actually know the show that propelled them to stardom. Got any more planned?
Oh, yes. We’ve still got a few recorded ones that we’ll be wheeling out in coming weeks, but we’ve got plans to record more. In fact, if all goes to plan, we’ll end up with a full set of 52! (terrifying thought, I know…) And that’s to say nothing of the fact that the DwarfCasts won’t always only be episode commentaries…
Sean, if you’re not careful, you’re going to overtake Arlene as our favourite new visitor since the relaunch. And she might have a thing or two to say about that… ;-)
I really want to put out our The Last Day commentary but, without some VERY heafty censoring, I doubt anyone would want to speak to us again…
>Sean, if you?re not careful, you?re going to overtake Arlene as our favourite new visitor since the relaunch. And she might have a thing or two to say about that? ;-) NO! No no, no. Whyever would I have a problem with such a thing? Why, if you entertain the possibility that this is somehow a worrying position for me to find myself in, why, you’ve got another think coming, miladdo. Why, it’s absurd! Why… muh… [krytenwhine]It’s — just — not — fair![/krytenwhine] Joking aside, it’s all good. One of the reasons I like RD is ‘cos it seems to have a relatively very intelligent fanbase — or at the very least, all the more intelligent folks are among the most active fans in it. It attracts the clever people. And me ^_^ ! >I really want to put out our The Last Day commentary but, without some VERY heafty censoring, I doubt anyone would want to speak to us again? Well, now I want to hear it. What, are we talking slurs against the cast, against GNP, or against other RD sites (perfect in every way as they may or may not be) :P ? Or a bit of everything? (You don’t need to answer; I just wanted to mention how wonderful my weblog is XP .)
Oh God. The Last Day. Oh God. If you thought the Krytie TV one was bad, then just imagine how things were by the end of the night…
I’m annoyed that The Last Day was done without me, actually, as it’s the only one of series three that I reeeally (as opposed to “quite”) like…
Started listening to the Dwarfcasts a few weeks ago (yes, very late to this party). Currently up to ‘Timeslides’, but it occurred to me that I couldn’t remember reading/hearing anything about a particular point from ‘The Inquisitor’. Probably been covered ad nauseum on the forum… but hey ho. The Inquisitorrrrr is pruning the wastrels, giving a chance to those denied the gift of life, and expunging the likes of Lister and Kryten from existence for not having lived up to their potential. So when the now fugitives run into the ‘anti-Lister’ and Kryten… they’re in the exact same scenario: 3 million years into deep space, with Rimmer and Cat as ship-mates. That must mean that the replacement Lister and Kryten made near identical decisions throughout their lives to the originals. Therefore, did the Inquisitor give a chance to a useless sperm, whose existence is somehow justified by being even more feckless than original Lister, but achieving all he was capable of? Or, would The Inquisitor have realised his error, and dip back to the Lister-sperm production line again?
You get wiped from time if you fail to live up to your own standards, don’t you? So it would just be the case of them having done the best they could up given their situation. Or, the new Lister and Kyrten just hadn’t been inquisited yet.
Yeah, I think he has to wait and let the timeline correct and then Inquisit the replacements to see if he made the right sperm-choice. (I wonder how he actually manages to manipulate the timeline to make that happen? Do you think he does all the messy sperm-work himself?)
It also seems arbitrary the point in someone’s life time he inquists them. Why not right at the very end of their life? Someone could lead a really shitty life for 25 years and then turn it around and live 40 years of worth while life. But I’d agree with Ben and Dave in response to the actual question, the people that replaced Lister and Kryten would just be better at arguing their life was worth living, even if it actually wasn’t. What the Inquisitor is inadvertently doing is populating the universe with people that have the skills to be philosophers and lawyers, nothing more than that really.
if The Inquisitor inquisited himself, would all of his inquisitions be undone? Surely the sheer amount of time fuckery involved in all of that happening at once would just cause the entire universe to catch fire
if The Inquisitor inquisited himself, would all of his inquisitions be undone? Yes, but that would include his own inquisition of course.

He didn’t Inquisit himself in the episode, he just got erased from existence entirely. It would be a lot more complex if he was not only erased but also replaced with a different Inquisitor who still Inquisited, but Inquisited in a different way with different Inquisiting outcomes.
I do understand the greater complexity that would arise if The Inquisitor got a replacement person rather than only being erased from history – maybe some Inquisitions would still happen ultimately, maybe they wouldn’t – it was just a funny way of phrasing it, given the episode actively shows the Inquisitions being undone. On the topic, my theory is that the conclusion IS The Inquisitor doing the same thing he did to Lister and Kryten to himself (not a different “erase from history only” function), but it doesn’t work properly, because as soon as he’s erased his own timeline, the paradox prevents the replacement timeline from being created.
I wonder if the Inquisitor ever Inquisited himself? Tomorrow Trouble, Smegazine Vol 2 No. 5, pages 25-32.

Started listening to the Dwarfcasts a few weeks ago (yes, very late to this party). Oh blimey. We get better.
It’s spelt Smegmeister Ian, actually. That takes me right back to the old TORDFC Forums. The boy Symes and Snip of Smeg. Happy days. Oh blimey. We get better. Believe that, you’ll believe anything.

Ian’s joke about Lister’s hair in Series V never fails to make me laugh. In public, when I’m listening to it.
I’ve started listening to this against my better judgement and already been rewarded with Seb saying “No, no, I win!”. Amazing.
The other Scouser in Lock, Stock, the one who was in Goodnight Sweetheart, is Victor Maguire. It’s a shame it’s not Gary Bleasdale in a way though, as that would make four Red Dwarf cast members in that film along with Danny, Jake Abraham and Stephen Marcus.
I still love the pace of ‘The Inquisitor.’ One of the most exciting episodes to watch as a kid. Did anyone else that watched this as a child find The Inquisitor a scary character?
I was 7 years old when i first watched it, i remember being scared of the scene with the inquisitor crushing krytens head. i ain’t sure why that scared me but the visual was always something i had a hard time watching at that age.

Yes, although the rubber wall is very obviously not solid, Bobby’s face does look thoroughly squashed and very convincing.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Juliet May the director of this? It looks wonderful and there’s so much atmosphere to it.
