And about fucking time, too.

As was noted in the forums Chris Barrie’s official site has enduring a spell of downtime recently, but it has now returned with actual, factual updates!

In addition to a new front page message from Chris, there’s a bit of a news update. Most notably:

  • CHRIS WILL BE AT COLLECTORMANIA MANCHESTER ON 17th AND 18th NOVEMBER
  • HE WILL ALSO BE AT MEMORABILIA NEC ON 24th AND 25th NOVEMBER (NOT CONFIRMED)

I’ve never been to any of these fairs before (I pour all my convention energy into Dimension Jump, usually) but I’m sure Chris will be good value, as always, and it’s a perfect opportunity for a cheap way to meet the man himself. Let us know if you going along to either and report back your findings if you like!

  • I’ve been to Memorabilia a few times, and the wife has been to Collectormania; autographs and photos tend to be about ?15, and that’s on top of your entrance fee. But if you’re lucky, and you catch the stars during a quiet period, they may just do a photo for free, if they’re nice. Nice people include: Paul McGann, The Goodies, Toyah, Hattie, Robert Llew, Warwick Davis, Lou Ferrigno. Nasty people include: Star Trek people, Dave Prowse, any of the ‘top billing’ people, really.

But they tend to be decent days out. I’ll never, ever forget bumping into someone and hearing a loud, booming “OOOOH, SORRY!” and it turning out to be Brian Blessed.

He once asked me for directions at the studios. It hurt my ears.

  • At this point, I’d like to quote one of my favourite forum posts ever.

    > A sitcom called Blessed that isn’t a star vehicle for Brian Blessed is, frankly, shit from the off. Something involving Brian taking a different job each week which centres around being very quiet – librarian, snooker commentator, Bin Laden catcher etc.

Matron: “Phew- getting all those babies off to sleep was hard work, but I finally managed it! And look, the new staff nurse is here to help me out!”

Enter Brian in too-small nurses outfit with comedy stockings and circles of blusher on cheeks

    Brian: HEL-LO!

Babies wake up and start screaming.

    Matron: Oh Brian!

  • OK, i’ve really got to stop reading posts in college. I get really strange looks when i’m bawling with laughter…

Really!? Try lieing on the floor or randomly bowing to your friend …that when you get really strange looks.

I never went as after as wear a gingham dress and army boots with a Mr Flibble on my right hand.

  • Don’t forget the changes to his “Massive Series” page I mentioned a coupla days ago–it used to be under a different title and have a short piece (I assume by Chris) on just one of the machines he got to play around with, which was some kind of farm equipment. Now it’s a sort of brief summary of all three Massive series along with I think some links for ordering the DVDs.

Oh, and I’ve just noticed most of the pictures in his photo gallery Flash thingy are gone. There are only like three left now that I can see, and there were twelve when I wrote up my review of the site. (I mean, I want to see the photo gallery revamped, but I was thinking along the lines of getting rid of the Flash entirely. It’s plain unnecessary for just showing off pictures, I think.)

At any rate, this is just plain good all over. Here’s hoping the site sees more updating!

  • Also:

    >Nice people include: Paul McGann,

Really ^_^ ? I’ve heard most of the actors who’ve played the Doctor are pretty nice to their fans, with the notable exception of Peter Davison (who’s said to be kind of…aloof and curt).

  • This reminds me how stupid the BBC’s adaptation of [Conan Doyle’s] Lost World was a couple of years back – Prof Challenger is a role that Brian Blessed was BORN to play – seriously, you’d think the descriptions of the beard, voice, everything were written with Blessed in mind via some sort of time-travel paradox – …and they got Bob Hoskins. Idiots.

I might as well trot out my stories about these two Doctors at this point ;-)

I met McGann at a screening of a thing his missus was in with Christopher Eccleston last Christmas. It took a while to pluck up the courage to talk to him (well, actually, it took three or four glasses of wine and Cappsy goading me on with the words “You can’t even phone up BT to get our line sorted, there’s no way you’ll talk to McGann”), and when I did, he pretended to be Mark McGann instead.

As for Davison… my Dad once met him in a bar, recognised him but didn’t know from where, went up and started chatting to him, and then suddenly mid-sentence he realised – “You’re Peter Davison, aren’t you? Oh, God, I’m so sorry, I thought I knew you!” he said. “Don’t worry,” said Davison, “happens all the time.”

  • > ?You can?t even phone up BT to get our line sorted, there?s no way you?ll talk to McGann?

One sentence that somehow manages to summarise two entire lives.

  • To be honest, talking to Osama Bin Laden would be easier and a far more enjoyable experience than ringing BT…

And I say this from the heart…

I didn’t mean to imply that any of the other Doctors *aren’t* nice (although, Hartnell’s a bit ignorant), it’s just that McGann’s the only one that either I or the wife have met. Well, I saw Davison on a tube platform a few months ago, but he was struggling with a big suitcase so I didn’t say hello.

  • I’m sure I heard somewhere that Colin Baker is a proper old school racist, cant for the life of me remember where though so I could be wrong.

I understand that–it was just something I’d heard over at Tom Baker’s messageboard (there was a discussion about how each of the actors who played the Doctor came off at conventions and other places). I’d heard they were pretty much all good to excellent with their fans (I’d heard, for instance, that Colin Baker absolutely adores all his fans and is wonderfully nice to people at cons, and Tom Baker has that quote attributed to him, about the fans saving him from darkness–I’d also read good things about Pertwee, Troughton and McCoy), altho’ sometimes Davison came off as a bit aloof.

  • > Well, I saw Davison on a tube platform a few months ago, but he was struggling with a big suitcase so I didn?t say hello.

Didn’t occur to you to help him with the case…

  • > Really ^_^ ? I?ve heard most of the actors who?ve played the Doctor are pretty nice to their fans, with the notable exception of Peter Davison (who?s said to be kind of?aloof and curt).

I remember being in an impromptu party with him and Terrance Dicks in a hotel room at the Eleventh Hour of Gallifrey One convention in LA where we got totally smashed on vodka martinis and were nearly chucked out by hotel security after complaints from the rooms next door. He seemed very nice to me.

We ended up in the bar downstairs eating pizza and witnessing Andrew Beech turn up in a stretched limo and sweep majestically into the hotel wearing John Pertwee’s cape.

    Ah, happy days.
