Red Dwarf is definitely coming back, on Dave. Or UK Gold. And it’s going to be a mix of old and new material. Or not. Now, from this point on, things get a little bit confusing…

As Somebody posted on our forum, The Guardian is reporting that four new episodes have been confirmed, featuring “a mix of new material and archive as its centre point”. There is some confusion about which of the UKTV channels this will be on – they say Dave in most places, but the soon-to-be-rebranded GOLD in others. Let’s hope it’s the former – Dave is free-to-air, but GOLD isn’t.

To be honest, if archive footage will be “the centre point” of all four episodes, this will be massively disappointing. But Off The Telly have quotes from Robert Llewellyn which would suggest something completely different.

We’re doing four new shows – two of them are going to be proper new episodes of Red Dwarf. [The third programme] is so exciting I’ve been asked not to say anything because other people will steal the idea. And it is a great idea, quite challenging for us as performers. The [final programme] is a kind of behind-the-scenes… the truth… there’s been so many rumours and gossip about Red Dwarf, so all those things.

This is intriguing. Two “proper new episodes” will surely be original material. The behind-the-scenes thing will obviously be archive stuff, but the other programme is a mystery. If it’s that exciting, it can’t just be a clip show, can it?

I literally have no idea what to think. Let’s hope TOS sheds some light on this on Friday. They can’t keep quiet again, can they?

  • The good news: two of the four specials will be “proper new episodes.” As long as that is true, I don’t give two poops WHAT the hell the other two are.

Oh wait, one of the remaining two is the behidn the scenes episode. Which could either be fascinating, or a complete retread through stuff we already know. Either way, could be worse.

That means the clipshow rumors have a smaller and smaller place to hide: in this case, at most, one out of four new specials will be a clip show.

And you know what? With two proper episodes and a making of to back it up, I don’t care one bit. Clip to yer heart’s content.

  • Also, I hope it’s Dave that gets the new episodes. He’s one of my favorite commenters on this site and he deserves a break.

  • Also:

    >It also confirmed the original cast of comedy Red Dwarf would reunite for new episodes.

In Dwarf’s case, “original cast” is a fascinating term, and one worthy of paying special attention to. Strictly, the original cast would be Chris, Craig, Danny and Norm.

I think it’s safe to say that Robert is involved, too, despite his not-entirely-original status.

So does this mean no Hattie? No Mac? No Chloe? Or does “original cast” just mean nobody’s been directly replaced?

    TOS WHERE ARE YOU

  • I wish we’d get something clarified rather than being contradicted all over the place by various, supposedly reliable, sources. I’d like to think that Robert is a more reliable source than the Guardian website but who knows?

I’d still be massively concerned about the quality of two new episodes but, if this were true, it would atleast stop me whining about fucking clip shows for a while*.

    * A “while” is an indefinite amount of time.

  • Or does ?original cast? just mean nobody?s been directly replaced?

I would imagine that’s it. Obviously, whoever takes part is another issue, but my assumption is that original means Chris, Craig, Danny etc not Dylan Moran as Rimmer, Nick Frost as Lister etc.

  • I quite like the sound of that, 2 new shows is better than bugger all! It would be nice if both were an hour long (45 minutes), the Third show will be The Midgets, a whole episode dedicated to the Blue Midget dance group!

    >Meanwhile, UKTV Gold will be rebranded as GOLD, which stands for “go on, laugh daily”, with four new episodes of Red Dwarf featuring a mix of new material and archive as its centre point marking the comedy’s 20th anniversary.

it sounds to me like this will not be on Dave, shit. let’s hope they get the DVD’s out pretty quick, not sure if i’d be willing to get Sky for new Dwarf, it might be worth getting a friend to record it for me and getting the DVD’s soon after.

  • >Dylan Moran as Rimmer, Nick Frost as Lister etc.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: a Ricky Gervais Kryten.

  • >Also, I hope it?s Dave that gets the new episodes. He?s one of my favorite commenters on this site and he deserves a break

    Thanks. I’m playing Kochanski.

  • That publicity pic that the Guardian chose to use is still my favourite Dwarf photo. They’ve all got wildly different expressions, but they’re all completely in character.

  • Textual Analysis 101: “The centre point” refers to “GOLD” – i.e. New Dwarf will be the centrepiece of GOLD’s autumn season, and the episodes will be in some form a mix of archive and new.

They refer to Dave a lot in the article, but the only specifics in relation to Dwarf’s channel are to GOLD.

  • >Dylan Moran as Rimmer
    >a Ricky Gervais Kryten

Oh yeah, I could totally go for that. That would work on so many levels.
Could this be the “exciting” third ep that Bobby’s talking about?

Personally, I’m holding out for a musical in the style of Dr Horrible.

  • >Could this be the ?exciting? third ep that Bobby?s talking about?

Yup, meatspin.com just confirmed the following cast list:

    Lister – Nick Frost
    Rimmer – Dylan Moran
    Kryten – Ricky Gervais
Cat – Robert Webb in blackface
    Holly – Bill Bailey
    Kochanski – Catherine Tate

  • Whilst doing a google search I found this http://www.brandrepublic.com/News/846913/UKTV-unveils-new-channels-familiar-stars-John-Cleese-Red-Dwarf-crew/.

    From that site..

    >Dave has also commissioned a four-part series that will reunite the cast memners of Red Dwarf that will air in 2009.

I think this is first time we have had a year mentioned in a press release, guess that ruls out the ulitmate Xmas present, shame. at least it will be some thing to look forward to in 2009.

This site also mentions Alibi will replace UKTV Drama and Watch replaces UKTV Gold+1.

  • They refer to Dave a lot in the article, but the only specifics in relation to Dwarf?s channel are to GOLD.

    Yes, except for:

Red Dwarf: original cast will reunite for episodes on Dave. Photograph: BBC

John Cleese, Johnny Vaughan and John Sergeant will front original programmes for the repeats-heavy UKTV channel Dave, while the original cast will reform for new episodes of Red Dwarf.

  • Exactly. “Stuff will happen on Dave, while the original cast will reform for new episodes of Red Dwarf.” There’s no causal link between the first and second clauses – the separation could be more explicit, perhaps (and the TITLE of the article is misleading), but it probably has something to do with keeping wordage down for the benefit of RSS feeds or somesuch.

  • This is fascinating stuff despite it still being very confused. It’s always possible that TOS may announce and not give away too much finer detail thereby building up towards the actual event.
If it is ‘Dave’ (and I hope it is) a clip show seems a tad odd given that they have been showing full episodes.
I suppose it would be logical to have a clip show introduced by the characters to start off with merely to get new viewers up to speed.
Perhaps this could be what Robert meant by challenging, the actual cast/characters getting back together some time after VIII and looking back over their times together…
See, I’m starting to fantasise again…

  • >That publicity pic that the Guardian chose to use is still my favourite Dwarf photo. They?ve all got wildly different expressions, but they?re all completely in character

It shouldn’t, but it really distracted me that it was flipped

  • My guess is the third one would be live/partly improvised.

Well, here’s hoping Rob’s version of events turns out to be true.

  • I think there HAS to be a TOS update this Friday. This was the official press launch, so any embargo on the announcement has now been lifted. It would make absolutely zero sense for reddwarf.co.uk not to update properly on the news this Friday.

Let’s hope we get a clearer idea of exactly what the deal is with the four programmes then.

  • Despite Ellard not giving anything away with his comments, what he DID say makes more sense now, particularly the thing (which he later played down like a fucker) about there being room for a retrospective/behind-the-scenes done for a TV audience who’ve never seen the stuff we’ve been watching on DVD for the last 6 years.

So…the hourlong episode thing was kind of right, it probably is one episode split into two parts (with Dave adverts that’s around 48 minutes of programming, hopefully there’ll be more on the DVD) maybe the first episode on a Saturday, second on Sunday(?), with the ‘exciting’ third thing being on straight after the first episode and the behind-the-scenes after the second.

But what exactly is that third thing? An idea that someone else could steal?? Maybe it’s just the word ‘SMEG’ bouncing around the screen like some annoying screensaver for 30, sorry, 24 minutes?

  • I think the details released today have vastly improved the sound of of all this. As Phil has said: two new episodes is the massive, important factor here. I think we can all trust Andrew to succinctly get across some of the finer details when TOS reports, as he’s always been very to the point and speaking directly to the concerns, or at least perceived concerns, of fans. TOS updates have never been as vague as these press releases we’ve been getting.

Basically, everyone stop worrying. At the very least we’re going to be a massive, juicy heaps of fan based joy over the coming months, regardless of the eventual quality of what we get.

HOWEVER, if this is on GOLD and not Dave I’m going to be a saaaaad panda and will probably sacrifice Phil in some bloody way to make myself feel better. I hate that guy.

  • Hello net friends. This news is all the more fun to read, for being pissed at 3am in a london 24/7 internet cafe after a hugely entertaining evening of mad music and binge drinking.

Cant wait for more Red dwarf.

and, Ganymede and Titan F ing Rules the universe!!!!!!!! yeah!!!

  • Didn’t someone say the official announcement would be mid-September? Surely it should be this week if so.

  • Just on this whole GOLD/Dave thing… if GOLD is rebranding as a comedy channel, does that mean Dave will show anything other than Top Gear?

  • Have read, re-read and re-re-read the article, and it’s pretty clear that Dwarf will by on UK Gold, or whatever it’s called now. Not Dave.

S’pose I’ll be downloading the fucker after transmission.

I’m praying to the Baby Jesus that Grant and Naylor have got back together for this.

  • >Have read, re-read and re-re-read the article, and it?s pretty clear that Dwarf will by on UK Gold, or whatever it?s called now. Not Dave.

But it isn’t clear at all, because the assertion further down in the article saying RD will be on GOLD contradicts the headline, which puts it as appearing on Dave. Also, RD is already being repeated on Dave; why would GOLD be interested?

  • Was going to paraphrase this, but “Somebody” says it perfectly:

    >?The centre point? refers to ?GOLD? – i.e. New Dwarf will be the centrepiece of GOLD?s autumn season, and the episodes will be in some form a mix of archive and new.

They refer to Dave a lot in the article, but the only specifics in relation to Dwarf?s channel are to GOLD.

They say ?Stuff will happen on Dave, while the original cast will reform for new episodes of Red Dwarf.? There?s no causal link between the first and second clauses – the separation could be more explicit, perhaps (and the TITLE of the article is misleading), but it probably has something to do with keeping wordage down for the benefit of RSS feeds or somesuch.

  • What about the bit where it says “Red Dwarf: original cast will reunite for episodes on Dave”?

  • I’d be more inclined to believe the information in the bulk of the article rather than in the photo caption.

  • Woooo Hoooo…

Andrew has said on the webboard that there will be an announcement tomorrow and that GNP have sent Robert up to ‘Dave’ to report on things…

  • >I?d be more inclined to believe the information in the bulk of the article rather than in the photo caption.

I’d be more inclined to believe that a channel which already runs repeats of a programme might be more likely to show new material for that show, rather than a channel which doesn’t, and that a journalist *might* have got their wires crossed.

  • > and that GNP have sent Robert up to ?Dave? to report on things?

Rather that GNP DID send Robert up for the press launch yesterday.

  • Yes, in my excitement it wasn’t an actual quote….

Interesting though that my misquote got the response of ‘yesterday’ and ‘press launch’ which were not used in the webboard message :-)

The fact that ‘Dave’ was mentioned could well be good news…

  • > Interesting though that my misquote got the response of ?yesterday? and ?press launch? which were not used in the webboard message :-)

Well I said “This week”, and the news came out online yesterday. And it’s be daft if the “announcement” I mentioned on the board was to a receptionist and a pot plant… :-)

  • At one point wasn’t there talk of a touring Red Dwarf stage show using the movie plot?

I’m guessing the third episode will be a live broadcast of a ‘theatrical’ (as in performed on stage not a movie) Red Dwarf – an hour long type thing. This episode in particular could utilize flashbacks/archive footage as VT content to broadcast while set changes were taking place on stage.

This then leads to the forth episode – behind the scenes of the theatrical epsidoe which, hopefully, will tie the saga up.

  • > If by ?talk?, you mean ?completely unsubstantiated rumours on the interweb?, then?yes!

Yeah, rumours started by those two jokers Doug Naylor and Andrew Ellard.

  • I always thought “Carry On Dwarfing” was a good idea. Sid James as Lister, Kenneth Williams as Lister, Bernard Bresslaw/Hattie Jacques as Holly, Charles Hawtrey as Kryten, Peter Butterworth as Cat…

  • I hope these aren’t being branded as ‘farewell’ shows. I’m assuming the episode(s) will broadcast under some title rather than just ‘Red Dwarf’. ‘Red Dwarf – Mechanoid of Doom pts 1 & 2’ or something.

  • >I always thought ?Carry On Dwarfing? was a good idea. Sid James as Lister, Kenneth Williams as Lister,

    Low production Me2?

I know what you mean. I could actually see Sid James as Lister and Kenneth Williams as Rimmer…

Real life holograms though! Playing a hologram and a living person! How confusing!
