Oh, oh, it’s started… News Posted by Seb Patrick on 28th January 2009, 18:12 Though it’s already been posted in a comment thread by one Andrew Ellard (whom you might have thought to have a rather better place to post news bits, but we’ll not quibble if he wants to do our job for us as well), we thought this was rather worthy of promoting to its own front page post. You’ll find we’ll probably do a lot of this in the coming weeks. Well, I’m excited. I know we’ve had photos of Robert being fitted for his mask, and everything, but… well, seeing that picture – even though it’s just the back of some Scouse bloke in a leather jacket, jeans and fake dreadlocks – just makes it all feel so much more real. Lister is back. Red Dwarf is back. And putting aside any misgivings you might want to voice for one glorious moment… don’t it make you feel good?
I’m hugely encouraged by the decision to use that costume – it seems to fit in with the whole “classic Dwarf” feel that has been mentioned a lot. Interesting to see what they go for Rimmer-wise. Or even if Rimmer’s alive or dead, come to think of it!
They could be taking the most iconic costume for each character from the entire run. So, might Danny’s zebra coat be next? The ‘Camille’ version suit for Chris, perhaps?
Holy mother of pearl. It’s like seeing the silhouette of Indiana Jones for the first time…or something. If there was no date on this shot who would guess it was from 2009? ‘It’s like we’ve never been away.’ Too right. Craig must be so psyched to be in that getup again. Rimmer…I’m hoping for anything other than the VI/VII red/blue look which IMO never suited the character.
> Rimmer?I?m hoping for anything other than the VI/VII red/blue look which IMO never suited the character. They might even go Yellow/Red like in Out Of Time(!)
Just don’t let it be that stupid dark blue one with the white piping in ‘Oroboros’! I cringe when I see it.
>Rimmer?I?m hoping for anything other than the VI/VII red/blue look which IMO never suited the character. Rimmer’s uniforms: Shiny red (V) > puffy blue (VI) > puffy red (VI) > military grey (1/2) > Cpt. Emerald (III/IV)
I’m hoping for the blue uniform from VI – we gotta have hard light, right? But as for the rest, I’ve always had a soft spot for the green, so Capt. Emerald > military grey (1/2) > puffy blue(VI) > puffy red > shiny red
> Just don?t let it be that stupid dark blue one with the white piping in ?Oroboros?! I cringe when I see it. I always figured that was like a ‘dress’ uniform for special events on-board ship. Incidentally, I wonder if the technology has finally caught up to make Rimmer black & white as originally intended (consistantly, that is)..? Presumerably, with his Legion-enhanced hard-light drive still in the hands of the new Ace, if he is to be a hologram again, he’ll be soft-light.
Presumably, with his Legion-enhanced hard-light drive still in the hands of the new Ace, if he is to be a hologram again, he?ll be soft-light. If they killed off the resurrected version, sure. (I hope they didn’t or it would mess with the death scene at the end of Series 8.) Of course it could be the holo-Rimmer. We don’t know how successful he was as Ace after all. I hope we catch up with that version at some point anyway (if not in the specials then a future series.) Apart from having followed that character over most the previous series, it could be an interesting to see him meet the resurrected version. A nice little reversal considering the contemptuous reaction he had to the previous Aces he met.
> Holy mother of pearl. It?s like seeing the silhouette of Indiana Jones for the first time? That’s absolutely spot on. My god I did a genuine double-take when I saw that image. Suddenly it’s not just Dwarf that’s back…it’s my Dwarf (for my read ‘our’ but you know what I mean. To so many of us this was ‘our’ show). I raised some concerns to Ian on email earlier that my enthusiasm was tempered by my lack of enthusiasm for the last two series. It took that one image to make all that fade away.
Awesome. For some reason I thought they’d drop the dreadlocks. I too have been wondering whether Rimmer will be hologram/person/live/dead.
From the article in The Sun- Chris Barrie, who plays hologram Rimmer, said: ?Yes, Lister?s dream is about to come true. But like everything in Red Dwarf, nothing is straightforward.?
exiting exiting stuff …hmm i wonder what rimmer costume or even what rimmer they will use i suspect it will be a hologram rimmer with no explanation to weather its old rimmer or resurected rimmer whos died … either way to most people they see rimmer as a hologram so i wud be suprised if he was anything other in the specials .
Surely everyone wants the original hologrammatic Rimmer back? Maybe it would better not to explain it instead of some clunky exposition, unless there IS another opening crawl or something similar. I doubt they won’t address the lack of Kochanski. Unless we’re assuming Back To Earth is set in an unspecific time it would almost be insulting not to mention her. Maybe she IS in it but they’re not telling us. They could find her at some point.
I wouldn’t take The Sun’s word for it, just because they’ve referred to “hologram Rimmer” – it’s just shorthand, and doesn’t imply any knowledge of the new show.
This Lister doesn’t have to be the one from the end of Series VIII. This could be Lister from Stasis Leak “In five years time, you find another way to come back in time” We could follow his actions from that point on. That’s why he’s facing the other way, he’s got a beard!
Do you think we’ll get a pre-credits scrawl? That would be very ‘classic dwarf’ wouldn’t it? I’m not usually one for a lot of back-referencing, but if it to be a kind of “Greatest Hits” weekend of Dwarf then a scrawl and a throw-away explanation as to where Holly and Kochanski have got to and a quick setup for the new shows would seem to work well.
Aye, a pre-credits scrawl would be good. Either that or just kick things off with no explanation as to what’s happened. Doubt the average viewer would remember / care about a resolution to Series 8. Heck, even I’m not that bothered.
> I second that we need the deerstalker back, though. Or the giant Astrakhan hat – my favourite. Anyone else notice the packet of fags in Charles’ back pocket? :-)) > If they killed off the resurrected (Rimmer), sure. (I hope they didn?t or it would mess with the death scene at the end of Series 8.) In the intervening years, Rimmer might just have died from ‘natural causes’. In ‘Rimmerworld’, he remarks how most of his immediate family had passed away over the years. Maybe, in the years after surviving ‘Only The Good’, he just had a heart attack, or something… Very sad, but that’s life, I suppose… :(
Or, he failed to fix a drive plate properly and the entire crew got wiped out in a radiation leak. Again.
Yes! Rimmer eventually gets the formula right and fixes the decaying ship, but not before it’s been irreparably broken down to a much smaller, squatter size. Lister and Cat nick a Starbug from the mirror universe and set off to find the rest of the crew. While they’re off the ship, Rimmer fucks up some sort of basic repair, which ends up killing him and Kochanski, and temporarily shuts Holly down. Lister and Cat return, having given up on finding the long-gone crew, and decide to resurrect Rimmer as a hologram. For some reason.
Yes! That would have been a great start to a full Series IX. But then, wouldn’t they be SIX million years away from Earth (because of the radiation)? Or if Lister managed to turn RD around, he could ride out the 3,000,000 year trip home in statis. Hence, Back To Earth. ‘Red Dwarf: Back DOWN To Earth’, more like…
Kochanski went to the mirror universe too. But anyhow…. Ways the ship could be fixed: Time wand. It was wrecked, but since the two hard-cases are no longer apes the wand must have been fixed somehow right? Right? Time Drive. Go back before the virus infected the ship and prevent Dwarf picking up the pod. Sure there is the whole ‘the future can’t be changed if you know it’ thing from Future Echoes and Cassandra, but I’ve noticed that the rule doesn’t seem to apply in RD when someone travels back in time. (Timeslides, The Inquisitor, Out of Time and Tikka to Ride.) But then you’ve still got the rest of the crew there… and we have to get rid of them some time before they original Dwarfers get back to earth… Ok. Use the time wand or drive to retroactively fix (as in prevent destruction of) the wrecked Starbug. That could also prevent the guys entering the mirror universe as they could be prevented in the first place… (I’m not keen on that reset though.) Of course, since Rimmer is the only person on board the ship, he’s the one who would have to figure out how to use the time-drive and wand… He’s got years to work with though so… maybe Ace turns up to give him a hand. They use the stasis pods to generate a field outwards, freezing the sections of the ship that are decaying whilst they work on a fix (outside the field in an undamaged section of course otherwise they’d be frozen too.)
Or “bump” and they realise that they have just been trapped in a reality bubble from the minefield surrounding the time machine in “Out of Time”. The thing is there is no time machine, that was part of the alternate reality, what’s inside the minefield is the Red Dwarf itself. Holly is gone (destroyed along with/by the nanites or they combined and evolved into a higher life form) but they’ve left a gift- a version of the Hollyhop drive that works. One push and they’re back at Earth.
Or! Or! Or! The episode starts with them on Earth and no explanation whatsoever! Considering they’re only guaranteed two episodes to work with, I’d be just fine with this. Don’t spend your whole time tying up loose ends; just give us a good new story.
Take a leaf out of Black Adder series one. The opening shot has them leaping out of nowhere into a muddy field and Lister goes “Brilliant plan Kryters! They’ll never figure out how we did that one. Now, where the smeg are we?”
Or ?bump? and they realise that they have just been trapped in a reality bubble from the minefield surrounding the time machine in ?Out of Time?. The thing is there is no time machine, that was part of the alternate reality, what?s inside the minefield is the Red Dwarf itself. The reality mine-field is generated by advanced ships to protect their drive systems though. Why would the field surround Red Dwarf? I kind of like the twist of series 7 and 8 being a false reality in the bubble though… but it kind of makes the series count for nothing. (Some would argue that’s a good thing, but not me. There is good stuff there. A lot of good stuff in series 7.) The episode starts with them on Earth and no explanation whatsoever! Considering they?re only guaranteed two episodes to work with, I?d be just fine with this. Don?t spend your whole time tying up loose ends; just give us a good new story. Oh, sure, I wouldn’t suggest they cover the stuff I described in their specials (although a brief description of SOMETHING would be nice, even if it’s the usual joke text scrawl.) It was just a bit of fanfic reasoning to tie old and new together really.
> The episode starts with them on Earth and no explanation whatsoever This > Don?t spend your whole time tying up loose ends; just give us a good new story. This > The opening shot has them leaping out of nowhere into a muddy field and Lister goes ?Brilliant plan Kryters! They?ll never figure out how we did that one. Now, where the smeg are we?? And this
This makes me wonder if this is Dave’s teaser pic, I wonder if TOS will feature an even better on tomorrow? I just hope Lister looks better in that Jacket then the last time he wore it in Blue. even though it appeared to be the same outfit, it just didn’t look right on Lister in VII, though the film effect may have some thing to do with it.
correct me if im wrong but rimmer was not the only person left on red dwarf he was the “highest ranked member left on the ship” because most of the prisoners were left to die if i remember .. but i think there just may be a slight bit to much explanation to do at the beggining of the specials and may make casual viewers go ” WHAT ?” they could just say kochanski went back with her lister” or as others have said nothing at all though i they re actually on red dwarf may be difficult to suggest why holly isnt involved ..maybe it will start with them leaving red dwarf on starbug or something..
Bobby posted this on his twitter – http://twitter.com/bobbyllew/status/1159588565 Top secret location? The Moon?
> correct me if im wrong but rimmer was not the only person left on red dwarf he was the ?highest ranked member left on the ship? because most of the prisoners were left to die if i remember… Captain Hollister said most would be left behind to die due to a lack of escape craft, so yes, there would be others left besides Rimmer. Also, if Rimmer was captain on the alternate RD, and if he’s not dead yet on the dying RD, there will be two live Rimmers. > they could just say kochanski went back with her lister? or as others have said nothing at all though i they re actually on red dwarf may be difficult to suggest why holly isnt involved ..maybe it will start with them leaving red dwarf on starbug or something… My thoughts, exactly. We don’t see the alternate Lister when Rimmer crosses over, so maybe he’s a hologram there? Of course, that would cause all sorts of paradoxes for Kochanski if she stayed, since she’s already there, but paradoxes don’t seem to mean much in the series.
> correct me if im wrong but rimmer was not the only person left on red dwarf he was the ?highest ranked member left on the ship? because most of the prisoners were left to die if i remember? Captain Hollister said most would be left behind to die due to a lack of escape craft, so yes, there would be others left besides Rimmer. Also the coffee machine dispenser stated to Rimmer “They all went over to the mirror universe.” This suggests the other prisoners went to the mirror universe too so he IS alone. On the other hand the machine might not have been aware of the Tanks existence (it supposedly being secret to non officers) so they might be there after all. >We don?t see the alternate Lister when Rimmer crosses over, so maybe he?s a hologram there? They did film the alternate Lister, but that scene didn’t make it into the episode. You can see it in the series 8 deleted scenes. He isn’t a hologram but he is an officer.
> Alternatively, Only the Good is just as big a mess as 50% of the rest of the series, plot logic and all. Fixed.
>They did film the alternate Lister, but that scene didn?t make it into the episode. You can see it in the series 8 deleted scenes. He isn?t a hologram but he is an officer. Sadly, I don’t actually own any of the DVDs, only view them via Netflix’s Roku Player, so I’m not privy to stuff like that. They don’t give you the option to see all the cool extras, only the main episodes. I am working on getting the set, though.
Get the seperate series releases on DVD, they are the ones which come with extras. The other releases (Just the Shows, All The Shows) are just the episodes and subtitles.
> The episode starts with them on Earth and no explanation whatsoever! Yeah, it starts in Lister’s living room. Opening shot – French windows…
>Get the seperate series releases on DVD, they are the ones which come with extras. The other releases (Just the Shows, All The Shows) are just the episodes and subtitles. Are there any major differences between the UK and US releases? I know some versions/releases aren’t available over here. I’m kind of disappointed about that. :-((

They don?t give you the option to see all the cool extras, only the main episodes. I am working on getting the set, though. Since it wasn’t actually included in the episode, your idea is still as good as any though. I just thought I’d mention the scene out of interest like. I think it contains the same stuff, but more information concerning the releases can be found here: http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/merchandise/index.cfm
>Are there any major differences between the UK and US releases? To my knowledge the only difference in terms of content is that you’ll be missing a featurette on series 1…a bunch of clips of characters drinking to the tune of Tubthumping. I’m in America, too, so I’ve never seen it. I’m assured that I’m missing nothing at all. Also, the North American releases have packets of trading cards enclosed, which was, I believe, a temporary thing…but a friend of mine picked up the first few series recently and got the cards, so you may still get lucky and find a pack or two yourself.
It is a tough one finding a solution and starting point from where series Viii left us, i went through that for some time but found it hurt my head.. ..it’s only the same as trying to figure out how Kryten suddenly appeared in series 3 after leaving the ship on Listers bike!…. ….What ever happened to that bike i wonder…?..
