Doctor Dwarf : The End of Time News Posted by Seb Patrick on 9th January 2010, 14:08 Doctor Who and Red Dwarf mashups are nothing new, nor are they that surprising – there’s a lot of crossover between the fandoms (as evidenced by our forum) and ever since the revived series began we’ve been pointing out “amusing” connections, be they casting coincidences, dialogue similarities or simply just us taking the piss. And there are a slew of videos on Youtube that consist of people setting Who clips to the Dwarf opening theme. Most of them aren’t very good. But this one, inspired by the fact that the Vinvocci ship from The End of Time bore a startling resemblance to a certain green bulbous ship we all know and love, is something of an exception. In fact, it’s rather excellent – made by someone who clearly has an actual grasp of How to Edit, it’s a surprisingly faithful recreation of the series six titles, consisting entirely of End of Time footage. Indeed, I hadn’t realised how specifically series six-based it was (despite the fact that it instantly “felt” Dwarf-ish) until the side-by-side comparison in the second half of the vid… Check it out here.
Me and my sister said the same thing about the Vinvocci ship the moment it appeared. Strangely, I Tweeted a link to that vid around noon today.
I wasn’t convinced by the first half, but when you see what it’s replicating, it’s bloody brilliant! Well done that person.
Yeah, the second half of the video showing the comparison is especially excellent. Really brings home how fantastic the Dwarf opening theme is, as well.
Interesting. Fits very well. I didn’t really think of Starbug when I first saw the ship although there is a resemblance. I’d have paired that last image of The Doctor falling with the ‘sky-surfing’ Ace Rimmer shot from Series 7 myself but that might have actually been more to do with what can be realistically placed in the footage. (I.e time, limit, what’s available, what came before, etc.)

I especially liked the comparison as I recognised only half the replicating shots it seems! Good stuff
I was a bit frustrated by David Tennant and John Simm’s comments on the Vinvocci ship during the DVD Commentary. They said – and I may be paraphrasing here: DT – ‘It’s like the Volkswagon Beetle of Spacecraft’ JS – ‘It’s like a Space Smart Car’ (or something similar) It’s fucking Starbug! Is that Tucker bloke involved in any way, I wonder..?
