Doug Naylor, His Twitter Feed, This Afternoon News Posted by Jonathan Capps on 21st September 2010, 15:38 Because turning Bobby Llew’s Tweets into hastily written news items is *so* 2009. So, this is Doug Naylor and he has something to say. This afternoon Doug heroically battled through the war zone that was Twitter’s website, expertly dodging porn pop-ups and giant text, before, breathless and bloodied, finally reaching the ‘Tweet’ button. As chaos rained down around him, the following was delivered: Expecting some Red Dwarf news sometime in the next couple of weeks. Now, before we work ourselves into a moist frenzy, let’s look at what this could mean. Doug will receive the news, and he will tell no one. Same as above, but Doug will instead tear the news into four parts, sealing them in concrete and scattering them across the globe, sparking the fan base into a globe trotting, treasure hunting adventure. Doug will announce he is leaving Red Dwarf behind and moving on to other things, such as gardening or restoring classic cars. Something to do with Iain Lee. OMG NEW SERIES ANNOUNCED IN TWO WEEKS As far as I can see, we can expect at least one if not all of these things to happen. So, exciting times ahead!
Maybe Dave and/or cast are finalising certain ins and outs, scheduling and whatnot, and in a couple of weeks a real proper announcement of Red Dwarf X can be made. My balls feel cool…anyone else got cool balls atm??
Probably nothing to do with the actual Red Dwarf news, but does anyone know what Doug is currently doing at Shepperton regarding a shoot on Sunday?
Ah yeah that’d make sense thanks. Been out the loop for a bit with the site, imagine we’ll all come flooding back within the next ‘couple of weeks’.
> Doug will instead tear the news into four parts, sealing them in concrete and scattering them across the globe, sparking the fan base into a globe trotting, treasure hunting adventure. Oh now that sounds like fun. Any excuse for me to leave my job to become a tomb raider/pirate, right? > My balls feel cool…anyone else got cool balls atm?? Um…..no. For more than one reason.
>Any excuse for me to leave my job to become a tomb raider/pirate Well, if you’re having trouble putting together an Elaine costume for the flatwarming, you’ve just named a suitable alternative right there…
> Well, if you’re having trouble putting together an Elaine costume for the flatwarming, you’ve just named a suitable alternative right there… I am indeed bang on course for sorting my Elaine costume – really looking forward to it! I can’t really justify being a Tomb Raider beyond having big tits. If I left the flat in short shorts I’d be arrested for public indecency :-S
Doug’s currently scouting for opinion on audiences on Twitter: If – there was a new series of RD is it funnier if it’s recorded in front of an audience? Vote now! NB. Chances are the Audience will laugh a lot. Would this annoy viewers watching at home? And the other thing about RD+ Audience is all plot twists, best lines and show reviews will be on internet months before broadcast Make your thoughts known!
@sarukie Last I heard NL said didn’t want to do any more RD. “Last I heard.” SICK BURN, Doug. Anyone blame him?
Lol at the ‘gizzajob’ request from a certain someone. Now that WOULD be interesting! Definitely YES to the audience if the episodes are going to be more sitcom-y than BtE. If they’re gonna be ‘filmic’ in the same vein as BtE then I would vote NO because laughter doesn’t sit well over that format. One thing…look at how the laughter evolved over the series’, how earlier on it didn’t feel as intrusive, how it sat naturally in the mix. That’s how it should be, not the VIII-style massive loud laughs that DO sound canned because they’re too overblown and often don’t match the material. OK you can’t tell an audience how to laugh, but I reckon the sound mix is pretty important too. Laughter doesn’t mean you can’t have drama and pathos or anything involving action and/or effects. Dwarf could never have been a success with that attitude. Sitcoms should never be afraid to have long periods with no big laughs or no laughs at all. Heck, even Friends managed that, and usually in most episodes from what I’ve seen. To me VI, VII and VIII seem like they were written with a gag quota in mind. That’s how it feels compared with previous series’ anyway. Er, I seem to have read the words ‘big tits’ above…now I’m totally gone. :P Hell…AUDIENCE ALL THE WAY!!
I will certainly be interested in being in one of those audiences, like every other dwarfer on the planet….. anyone know how PLEEEAAASEEEE?
My two pennoth…. I say record it like VII, and show it to an audience afterwards. That way you get the filmic-production-quality-ness shenaningans, and you get the laugh track that you can turn on/off on the DVD… Personally, I think Dwarf needs the laugh track, it’s a part of the identity of the show. As much as BTE has grown on me now, it’s still a bit well…. silent. Looking at those youtube clips where people have put laughs on it just makes it work better, at least for me. Then again, that’s just my opinion – your mileage may vary. And no National Lottery for Holly? Fair enough – bring back Hattie I say, after being unceremoniously dumped for Norm’s return, she’s never said a bad word about Dwarf… failing that, I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. Only way to be sure. EDIT: Oh, and I can’t WAIT to see how many “How can I be in the audience???!!!111oneoneone etc” posts we’re going to see here over the coming weeks…
>I say record it like VII, and show it to an audience afterwards. If they have a laugh track, they’ll need to do that for the location work anyway, but for specific sets I’d imagine it’s best to have a studio audience. One of the reasons for the live audience is the way the actors react to it, upping their game, changing things to see what works according to audience response, etc. Obviously from that perspective recording a track later would be no different to having no track at all. As for whether I want a laugh track or not, I’m undecided. I did miss it at the start of BtE but I got used to the lack quickly. (I think I really noticed in the first scene due to the slow pacing of the bunk room scenes at the start.) Same for the audience free ‘special edition’ episodes of season 7. If new Dwarf follows the comedy drama route further I’d opt for no comedy track. Otherwise go the whole hog, live audience and all.
>EDIT: Oh, and I can’t WAIT to see how many “How can I be in the audience???!!!111oneoneone etc” posts we’re going to see here over the coming weeks… You should see my TORDFC email inbox already…
> I will certainly be interested in being in one of those audiences, like every other dwarfer on the planet….. anyone know how PLEEEAAASEEEE? You have to sodomise Doug Naylor
>> You have to sodomise Doug Naylor >How does Doug feel about that? It rates somewhere just between how he feels about BBC treatment a few years ago, and the time spent in meetings over funding for the red dwarf movie.
Absolutely loving Doug on twitter! Lol at the comings and goings between Bobby and Doug tonight. Pitching an idea to shoot a Dwarf Christmas Special and everyone works for nothing for charity! Then put the episodes on iTunes. Also, Doug mentioned earlier ‘audience is winning’. I really hope it does! Annnd he’s waiting for two things to happen regarding new Dwarf. I’m itching to see how this Partridge/Foster’s deal works out (they’re also doing The Fast Show, right?). If it’s successful surely a similar project involving Dwarf could be a future possibility. Even if it was just single scenes on one set. Partridge has a big audience out there, so does Dwarf.
Yes, Doug Naylor is a top class tweeter. I loved it when Bobby starting getting nervous about how public the conversation was.
Today he has said “If we do it it’ll be 30 minutes : in a 40 minute slot” So like Dave do with current repeats of bbc 30ish minute long shows then, like classic dwarf repeats etc with adverts stuck in. That’s good potential news to hear about the approach to new episodes.
That is good. As long as it doesn’t put Dave off the project. Much as I liked the BtE episodes, I did think they suffered somewhat from the smaller time-frame.
He’s also mentioned that the ‘two series’ thing is one Dwarf series and one of his new project, though shooting two series’ of Dwarf back to back had been discussed but it’s not possible for Craig. Doug must have a fair bit of material if they really were thinking of 12 episodes. You’ve got to love how much info Doug is giving us. With twitter it’s so handy, normally we would be waiting for the DVD doco for these kind of tidbits! Hopefully he and Bobby will tweet during production.
Oh, and I can’t WAIT to see how many “How can I be in the audience???!!!111oneoneone etc” posts we’re going to see here over the coming weeks… Oh, I’ve already done that. Sent him a Tweet telling him it was imperative I was there, as I received a letter offering me a place at the audience showings of series VII, but my mum wouldn’t let me go to London. Haven’t heard anything back, strangely…
Oh, I’ve already done that. Sent him a Tweet telling him it was imperative I was there, as I received a letter offering me a place at the audience showings of series VII, but my mum wouldn’t let me go to London. Haven’t heard anything back, strangely… Ah, I was sensible there. I told my dad instead of my mum, and he drove me to Teddington. Bless ‘im. :)
When I’ve got 5,000 followers I’m going to tweet a scene, already written line by line – if you think that’d be fun. You all know what to do.
The other thing we could do, is I pitch story-lines to you, say, three lines and you vote to tell me which ones you’d like to see me develop If anyone wants to give feedback, then now is the time, by the looks of things.
“World Exclusive – It will be a bunk room scene it will be about Lister writing a Father’s Day card.” Presumably to himself? I’ve suggested to Doug that he reduce the target number of followers to 4,000, as Kryten is a series 4,000 mechanoid. That’s a good enough reason!
The deal for the new series mustn’t be set in stone if he’s saying ‘if we go with a broadcaster who has commercials’. I’m guessing it will make it to Dave but, of course, you never know what could happen. A story I would definitely like Doug to do is Rimmer’s son appearing.
A revisit of Deb, Jim and Bexley certainly sounds plausible. I’d worry about pointlessly revisiting old storylines, but if it’s done sparingly it could be very satisfying indeed.
Yep, how can you not be addicted to his and Bobby’s tweets?? I agree they should do a Kryten sat nav as soon as – http://audioboo.fm/boos/193549-sat-nav-kryten
In fact, this twitter malarky is so mind-bending I’m even finding myself agreeing with the odd thing Ellard has come out with (most recently the Whites/Chef! thing). Somebody please…something something something.
Dun-Dun-DUN… http://twitter.com/DougRDNaylor/status/28672967665 Meeting with Commissioning bods on Thurs. Heard they’re not so much moving the goalposts as turning them in2 a giant catapult. Trust no-one. 9:54 AM Oct 25th via web http://twitter.com/DougRDNaylor/status/28674879625 Just fished out commissioning letter 4 new RD series signed by all parties May 26th, 2009 subject 2 prod and distrib agreements. I’m not mad 10:33 AM Oct 25th via web http://twitter.com/DougRDNaylor/status/28675252498 Not true. ‘I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_qgVn-Op7Q 10:41 AM Oct 25th via web
Be lucky to even get one by the sounds of these ominous messages… remember back in the day? Back then, back in the day, those days back then when we thought we were going to get two series filmed back to back, back in the day, in the olden days? I miss those days, back then.
>4 new RD series? I read that as “for” and not “four”. Either way, it sounds like he’s not getting what was agreed to, which is not good. I have a disappoint.
I read that as “for” and not “four”. Either way, it sounds like he’s not getting what was agreed to, which is not good. I have a disappoint. Yeah, I knew that’s what it meant, i was playing silly buggers, apologies But yeah, lets see what happens after today, Fingers crossed peoples!
Just like in any line of work, months down the line you can guarantee you’ll get someone saying ‘oh, we promised THAT, did we? Hmmm’ Here’s hoping everything turns out fine. :)
Oojh, is this good I can’t tell… http://twitter.com/DougRDNaylor/status/29023319700 DougRDNaylor Doug Naylor Progress on Big Thursday. 4 Weeks then contracting cast can begin I’m told. Time will tell. 16 minutes ago
I’d say it’s promising but nothing definite. It certainly makes me feel better than his previous recent posts.
I agree. I think you have to understand Doug’s cynicism with the commissioning process though. He’s been burned so many times before. Can’t blame him really.
Maybe when Doug asked Dave for a series their response was one we’ve all given at one time or another – ‘yeah, sure, ok, whatever’ agreeing to something without thinking! (or saying ‘yes’ to someone to make them go away…) Now he’s come back ready to get going with the series it’s perfectly natural for them to panic a little when they suddenly have to start realising the idea. I’m assuming that’s somewhere close to the situation here. Of course, the fact that Doug already made a very successful 3x25min special for them HAS to count for something, right??
He made a very successful 3x25min special for them without spending a lot of money. I imagine they’re doing to want him to continue to not spend a lot of money, especially as this is Dave we’re talking about.
