…since blah blah blah fuck you.

Episode 5, then! This week hasn’t brought much in the way of hints or information (apart from Bobby’s now deleted Audioboo) so we’re going into this one even blinder than we normally do. For a brief moment yesterday I thought there was going to be a scene shot on location in a muddy field, but turned out to be Ed Moore moonlighting on some other show.

For your set report this week we welcome Kris Carter as a guest writer, in the hope of mixing things up a bit. Be gentle with him. Furthermore we intend to Boo something at some point but NO PROMISES.

  • It seems tonight people were especially lucky in the audience as they got to see a rough cut of episode 1.

  • Wha!!!??? That makes me think that maybe this episode is tied into the first somehow…..of which I have seen neither…Hang on. This isn’t the specualtion thread is it?

  • I read that too! Meanwhile, somebody else who was there, complained of not seeing an entire episode filmed, 2 weeks in a row! Some people don’t realize what lucky sods they are to be there at all.

It’s been fun reading all the tweets though. Ecstatic people saying “I can’t believe I’m here!” interspersed with, er, “facts.” :)

  • Well, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. Still on a little bit of a high on the way home. Although to be honest they could have just stuck the cast on a rotating plinth for four hours and I could have quite happily have sat there and watch them spin silently.

Was lovely to meet the G&T crew, albeit briefly. Had to make a swift exit after my friend was consumed with panic at the thought of missing the train and having to aimlessly wander the streets of a small Middlesex town until 6.15 am.

  • It was amazing tonight. Completely blown away by the sets, and the attention to detail. And two(ish) episodes for the price of one! What an excellent night to finally get to the recording.
My only *real* regret is shouting out four ‘witty’ comebacks to Ray the warm-up guy. Very embarrassing. :/

  • …at least you didn’t get ridiculed by him and then teased with a bottle of water just for needing to go for a piss.

BTW. I have to say, for portacabin loo’s just outside the studio, they are kinda posh. It’s all in the little details. Proper towels. Carpeted. Brass fittings. I stood there and thought to myself “I bet DJJ pissed just here earlier today!”

  • >…at least you didn’t get ridiculed by him and then teased with a bottle of water just for needing to go for a piss.

That wasn’t you who held his hand was it?

  • Just got back. If you’d told me 24 hours ago that I get the chance to see 2 episodes of Red Dwarf X and a couple of bits from two other episodes, I wouldn’t believe you but a sudden email and a mad rush and I can cross an old item off the bucket list.

Had a great night. First time I’ve seen something recorded live so it was a bit of a wow. Ray was great at keeping up the momentum and I had no idea he was in Blink until he mentioned it towards the and I suddenly realised that of course he was – my favourite bit of TV of the last ten years, so I was rather slow on the uptake.

Who was there from G+T? I *think* I saw Seb on the other side of the studio (checked shirt?). Was going to say hello when the assembly cut finished, but then joined the mad rush to mob DJJ.

    And the episodes?

    Briefly:

Episode 1 : Get the criticism of the guest star. Find it a bit too close to another episode. Loved the running joke. But hmmm….
Episode 5 : The most pedestrian episode of Red Dwarf ever? Not a criticism, exactly just an acknowledgement that this was a very laid back offering. A sofa and some french windows really wouldn’t go amiss here. Hoping the missing scenes add a bit of drama/RD edge to this. First pre-record scene they showed may be my favourite bit of Red Dwarf of the last 19 years though.

Better than VIII and BTE? Undoubtedly.
As good as I-VI? No chance.

  • It’s a bit hard to judge 5 as we’ve seen the start and the end and missed the middle. It was interesting to see the first episode again though edited down and it stood up well to a repeat viewing.

The people from here I saw tonight were Ian, Cappsy, Seb, Jo, Danny, Jezz, Kris, Si, Paul & Joey. There were other people who said they read the site but I don’t know if there were any other regular posters.

    That’ll suit me just fine.

    Thete.

  • I’m not sure you can judge until you’ve seen the finished article. Ok yes, jokes can be judged, but Red Dwarf isn’t a clip show, many for me arent a joke festival but i still love to watch the Episode. If it’s like VII will we ever hear the end of it?

  • I don’t count as a regular poster anymore :x

    For what it’s worth,
    II > I > III > everything including X, BTE and VIII > VII

  • >It’s a bit hard to judge 5 as we’ve seen the start and the end and missed the middle.

Fair point, but I think we saw well over half of if. I don’t really “get” that episode. I find it especially interesting considering the clamp-down on spoilers as I found the plot very “normal” and think my synopsis would be much the same as the Radio Times’s prior to screening. There just wasn’t much to it so am hoping that the middle is where the plot gets slightly more interesting.

In terms of evoking a series, probably 1 to be honest (the content of the first scene evoked a very, very small bit of Infinity) but mainly because the first couple of scenes are just dialogue and the plot (such as it is) doesn’t really kick in until a bit later (with the funniest scene which I’m still smiling about now).

    >I’m not sure you can judge until you’ve seen the finished article.
Is this comment specifically for me or G+T and their broadcast discussions too? I approach Red Dwarf as a comedy, first and foremost. My main fear was that this would be plumbing to the depths VIII went to to get some laughs. It didn’t, so what I’ve seen of episodes 1&5 seen are better than that series. I’m still concerned about some of the more cartoonish elements (particularly in Episode 1) and I’ve yet to see some really great Dwarf plots, but I found it encouraging.

    >many for me arent a joke festival but i still love to watch the Episode

See, I don’t tend to watch those episodes. There the ones I don’t like.

    >If it’s like VII will we ever hear the end of it?

If it’s like V you’ll never hear the end of it either. Welcome to fandom.

  • I don’t count as a regular poster anymore :x

Oops, sorry, forgot to mention you. There were quite a lot this week which was nice.

  • >I’m still concerned about some of the more cartoonish elements (particularly in Episode 1) and I’ve yet to see some really great Dwarf plots, but I found it encouraging.

when you say great red dwarf plots what are you comparing it too? i mean some plots in 1-6 were better then others within them series and even then they were still better in series 8

p.s bring on the 5th set report i cant wait to read

  • I’ve written the set report and emailed it to Cappsy, so the ball’s in his court now! Apologies for the lateness – I wrote the report as soon as I got in, but it was like 4am…. I decided to proof it this morning before I sent it, but ended up oversleeping until 2pm. Whoops!

  • >Fair point, but I think we saw well over half of if

It’s hard to tell, but I’m not sure that we did you know… it didn’t feel to me like half an episode. We’ll just have to wait and see I suppose!

  • There’s hopefully time in the last week of recording to get all these missing parts sorted. As for laughter over those scenes, it’s always possible to dub previously-recorded laughs OR there could be an audience screening.

It was a general comment really, everything is open for discussion.

I’m not sure I look upon Red Dwarf as an out an out comedy anymore, it’s more comedy drama feel, maybe that way I’m not looking for what’s been done in the past. But the thing Red Dwarf has done so very well is the plots, it’s twists and turns, it’s surprises. I really hope the fundamental elements still exist, it also gives a forgiving cushion if the gags don’t win.
It’s not going to please everyone, it’s impossible and BTE with it’s physical direction probably did upset a large number of fans. So this is going to be a test of resilience for the comedy and the show.

  • This isn’t really the right thread for this I guess, but I just wanted to mention that the new banners using screen shots from the rdx teaser videos, look awesome.

  • Oops, sorry, forgot to mention you. There were quite a lot this week which was nice.
No, that’s okay, I have been less than active thos last few… years.

  • Now I can almost pretend I’ve been there. I’ve soaked in the train and tube ambiance and milled around with the crowd in the holding area. Between this and the set reports, I’ve got as close as I’ll probably ever get to the actual experience of being in the presence of the genesis of a new season of Red Dwarf.

    Thanks for the Memory! (:

  • > Cappsy, so the ball’s in his court now!

You keep your balls away from Cappsy, you hear me!?

    > I don’t count as a regular poster anymore :x

So long as half of us half your picture pinned to our wall. You count. Quality > Quantity ennit.

  • New video is up. We get a good look at Rimmer’s new outfit. It looks great from what I can see, an improvement on the IX version. It looks a bit like a padded version of the III-V+IX outfit. Really works well.

Also get a good look of another set and it looks like the StarBug cockpit (going by the way the chairs are laid out) or the Drive Room.

  • Reaaaaaly curious about that blurred screen. Light yellow blurry triangle, too much to hope that it’s Hattie? :/

  • The only problem I have with Rimmer’s outfit is, well, it looks a bit too nice and smart. Captain Emerald, however, was more in keeping with his gimpy ways. Especially the cap.

  • Rimmer’s new outfit is brilliant. A new variant of the III – V, BTE tunic, minus the buttons and with a redesigned front piece that’s now symetrical. I’m not sure how visible it is, but in person the badge is now silver and gold, and looks great!

  • it doesnt look like it has the red tint that the other outfit had but maybe im wrong

    i like it though

and im guessing he doesnt need the H as its only rehearsals

  • Episode 6, and I’m off to Shepperton. And bless him my dad’s just said “have a smeg time son.” ha ha. he is 68 and doesnt quite get the show.
