Put simply:

NEWSFLASH: Episode 2 title released as well!

So, everyone’s clearly going to be talking about episode 6’s title (in fact as I was writing this, everyone WAS talking about it). It’s certainly provocative (“if The End was the first episode, then is this the last?!?”) but remember that Doug has been very clear in his intentions to make more Dwarf after this series, so don’t worry too much.

It’s also interesting to note (but not *very* interesting) that this episode had a different title for shooting (as spotted by Fan Club president James Bull on a near-by script at the recording) which was very different to the one they ended up with and, possibly because we hadn’t actually seen everything from episode 6 on the night, not a little confusing. Anyway, that’s probably a discussion for a different day. I’m going to go back to refreshing the BBFC site every 15 minutes until they confirm episode 2 is called ‘Suns and Sons’, or some shit.

EDIT (20:32): Oh look. Naylor Minor has confirmed that episode two is entitled Fathers and Suns, not Fathers and Sons or Suns and Sons, like you and Skeletor think.

So that’s:

1) Trojan

2) Fathers and Suns

3) Lemons

4) Entangled

5) Dear Dave

6) The Beginning

DISCUSS.

  • From the Titles we have so far, does it seem that the Episodes are being shown in the order in which they were filmed ? and not the Title i was Expecting for Episode 6.. but it is great.

  • So so excited and up for this! If this was 1993 I’d be designing two video sleeves right now. Byte One – Trojan, Byte Two – Entangled.

  • > From the Titles we have so far, does it seem that the Episodes are being shown in the order in which they were filmed ? and not the Title i was Expecting for Episode 6.. but it is great.

    Indeed.

  • I always thought the very last episode of Red Dwarf would be called The Beginning. So, now I feel sad. :(

  • I’m troubled. Ever since I saw “The End,” I assumed the last ever episode would be called “The Beginning.”

In one of the set reports, there was something about Doug saying ‘don’t release any spoilers or there won’t be any audience seating next time,’ so that gives me hope, but the ep title is still troubling. I don’t want RDX to be the last series.

  • So thats…

    10.1 – Trojan
    10.2 –
    10.3 – Lemons
    10.4 – Entangled
    10.5 – Dear Dave
    10.6 – The Beginning

I wonder what’s keeping them from releasing the title of Episode 2? Probably quite spoilery!

  • Blooming hell. Episode 1 must have been tough to get down into the allotted 30:00 slot. If it were back on the BBC it would have to have another 30 seconds chopped off. The adverts are really worth the extra 30 seconds of episode of course.

  • >I wonder what’s keeping them from releasing the title of Episode 2? Probably quite spoilery!

The BBFC just haven’t passed it yet. It’ll be passed over the next few days.

  • I wonder what’s keeping them from releasing the title of Episode 2? Probably quite spoilery!

Nothing. They just haven’t finished passing it I’d imagine.

  • It has to be said that if The Beginning *did* prove to be the last episode of the show then it’d be a pretty damn fine way to go out.

  • >Its Sons of Suns

That’s possibly/likely Wikipedia bollocks. The same Wikipedia bollocks as the person who kept putting Hattie Hayridge down as 2012 until I told them to source it or stop posting it.

  • I hope the title for episode 2 isn’t the one posted on Wiki over the weekend.

And how many “sex references” are there in series X?!! I’m not sure I want my kids to watch this now!

  • Episode 6 – The Beginning. I too also imagined that the final ever episode would be called this. I wonder if the episode in some way links back to the very first episode. Is Series X going to be Red Dwarf’s final series?

  • going to be sad if ep 6 is last episode ever, i was at the filming and nearly didnt make it so glad i did now.

  • I wonder if Episode 6 will end with a caption saying “The End” just like episode 1 did saying “The Beginning”.

  • I wonder if Episode 6 will end with a caption saying “The End” just like episode 1 did saying “The Beginning”.

Reading that made me feel genuinely sad.

  • > I wonder if Episode 6 will end with a caption saying “The End” just like episode 1 did saying “The Beginning”.

Only the Good already fucked that particular pooch.

  • I read ‘The Beginning’ and immediately thought, like everyone else, ‘last episode?’ But then, remembering how Doug came across when he was talking to us at the recording, I can’t see RDX being a final series, certainly not by choice, at least.

And even if it *does* come to be the final episode, this is a series we thought was over in 1999.

  • > And even if it *does* come to be the final episode, this is a series we thought was over in 1999.

I think this is the pertinent point. If Series X really is the last one, at least we ended up getting far more Dwarf than we ever thought we would.

  • > It has to be said that if The Beginning *did* prove to be the last episode of the show then it’d be a pretty damn fine way to go out.

Totally agree, if it has to end here it’s a fantastic way to go out, pretty much exactly what I’d have hoped for.

  • Show six contains “moderate violence” as opposed to “moderate sex references” like the other episodes.

  • I like moderate sex references and I like moderate violence, but which is better?

There’s only way to find out…

    FIGHT (while talking about todgers)!

  • So Trojan is the one about Red Dwarf getting updates, yeah?

It’s Doug’s debut piece of slash fiction where the cast all rubber up.

  • Speaking of video covers (someone was)…a few years ago on eBay I bought a number of rejected covers for VHS releases…double packs (i.e. Bytes 1 and 2 in a double video case). Never released, different artwork to the single Byte releases…and the word “REJECTED” scrawled (maybe by Rob / Doug?) in marker pen.

Anyone interested in seeing them if I can scan them…or is this the sort of shite that only interests me?

  • Re the vid sleeves – I recorded every series on 3/4 hour tapes. I did sleeves, using the blurb from the official videos. My series IV ‘White Hole’ sleeve remains one of my favourite things I’ve ever drawn. :)

Oh, and I think *most* of us would be interested in almost anything with REJECTED scrawled by Rob/Doug on it. ;)

  • I got genuinely excited when I saw the titles for Episodes 5 and 6. When I saw “Dear Dave”, I immediately thought of the idea of Doug’s that I heard about on one of the Dwarfcasts – and the shot in the trailer of Lister with a Father’s Day card to himself – so I assume it’ll all be in that episode. And when I saw “The Beginning”, after hearing about Doug’s desire to make more after this series, I didn’t think that it could possibly be the last episode. But I agree that it’d be a great way to go out. Heck, 10 years ago, I didn’t think this would happen!

  • I made alternate DVD sleeves for series 1-6 with different spine art to make it look like 1-6 were a complete set. Mainly using Mark Wilkinson’s artwork for the re-mastered VHS boxes.

  • “The Beginning” makes me think that it will be a “Back to the Future Part II”-style time travel plot which takes them back to the events of “The End” from a different perspective.

Of course the people that went to the studio recordings already know the answer to this and are probably laughing at my speculation. -.-

  • id be suprised if doug naylor decided this was to be the last ever series esp after telling the audiances to keep hush hush which would boost to boost the chances of a Dave wanting another series

and on thecriticshow.com danny john jules said there was an option open to make series 11 and he didnt sound like he believed it was the last series =/

  • Richard Naylor has just tweeted that Episode 2 is called ‘Fathers and Suns’.

    So:
    Episode 1: Trojan
    Episode 2: Fathers and Suns
    Episode 3: Lemons
    Episode 4: Entanglement
    Episode 5: Dear Dave
    Episode 6: The Beginning

  • Blimey, nearly missed that Tweet because I was looking at this shithole. Cheers.

Richard Naylor. Bless his little cotton socks.

*goes back to read set reports, tries to work out how titles relate to contents*

  • “The Beginning” ties up Red Dwarf completely, crossing into the events leading up to the Earth-Minbari war in Babylon 5.

  • I’d be interested in seeing the rejected video sleeves! I always loved the designs of those old VHS Dwarf vids. Please scan them Jimboid if you get a chance. Of course I love the fact that we now know what the episode titles are. I think they are good episode titles.

  • Ah well, nice to see full episode list finally. for all people who saw recording, for those of us who didn’t it’s like thrill of getting Red Dwarf VII calendar in Xmas ’96 or was it ’97?

  • I was hoping episode 2 would be called Dad, as a little callback to the famous lost episode.

Fathers and Suns is a good title though. Better than Sons and Suns, wherever that came from.

  • Well this is all jolly exciting.

As suspected I’ve now almost entirely forgot everything I witnessed back in whenever it was. Getting old has its perks.

  • ‘Trojan’ sounds like a classic episode title! ‘The Beginning’ hmmm, what a statement. If it is the last ever episode…fair do’s.

  • Bleeding Cool writes:

He [Richard Naylor] didn’t mention Lemons and neither did the BBFC yet, but it’s a rumoured title and Naylor is implicitly endorsing it with his comments that only one title remained unknown.

Sometimes I really fucking hate Bleeding Cool. “He didn’t mention it, therefore that’s the title.”

  • Die in bed you Trojan pig-dog, gnyarrg, kerpow.

I love si’s posts – thanks for sharing your VHS art with us! I had some bought videos over the years and since Series 6 refused to buy but stick with the recordings off the telly (still VHS and not DVD, blue-arse what you kids call it) I decorated the video labels with similar font and used red for the ‘D’ letters in a sad bastard attemt to make them look like they belonged with my ealrier shop-bought series. Nice to know there’s other fellow saddos out there!

  • > Should I worry that all these episodes are rated 12 where most of series 1-6 were PG?

Nah, I don’t think it’s anymore more than just changing standards. I don’t event think the 12 rating existed for a lot of the episode’s original VHS releases.

  • Not really. It might have the highest overall rating since Series VIII but it wasn’t as puerile.

  • > Nah, I don’t think it’s anymore more than just changing standards. I don’t event think the 12 rating existed for a lot of the episode’s original VHS releases.

    True, that’s why Marooned was a 15.

    > Most the red dwarf dvds are rated 12, so i dont think anything to worry about

The individual episodes were mostly PG though.

    > Not really. It might have the highest overall rating since Series VIII but it wasn’t as puerile.

Yeah, that’s mostly what I was wondering about. Just so long as there are no erections hit by hammers…

  • > Yeah, that’s mostly what I was wondering about. Just so long as there are no erections hit by hammers…

Nothing to worry about on that front. The only erection I saw at a recording was John’s.

  • >Should I worry that all these episodes are rated 12 where most of series 1-6 were PG?

    Only if you’re eleven.

  • > The only erection I saw at a recording was John’s.

Ah, but did you see it at 50i or 25p? :P

  • So I’m gonna guess what these episodes could be about, just going off the titles…

    1) Trojan – a Trojan warrior-themed simulant running loose across the ship? a sequel to Legion? something to do with a Trojan virus??

    2) Fathers and Suns – one of the crew, or all of them become fathers, or either Jim and Bexley come into it somehow (and is how Lister gets the card), or both Rimmer’s father and brother feature?

    3) Lemons – no blummin idea….. it’s Shrove Tuesday and the crew are searching for some lemons to squeeze onto their pancakes?? XD

    4) Entangled – a Cat episode? something involving the fusing of two characters together?

    5) Dear Dave – maybe Kochanski is connected to this one, I say that cause she calls him ‘Dave’ so it could be a letter written by her starting ‘Dear Dave’?? Or it’s Doug’s loveletter to the channel…:P

    6) The Beginning – the last ever episode of Red Dwarf? or possibly meaning a new beginning for the crew? All coming full circle back to ‘The End’??

  • Ditto:

    1) Trojan – some kind of computer virus they they either battle in an AR computer game or which takes over the ship’s computer for an episode.

    2) Fathers and Suns – Jim and Bexley do something or other. Rimmer faces his own father issues. Kryten steers the ship into a sun because he’s nostalgic for the heady days of series VII.

    3) Lemons – The time travel one where they meet Jesus, and squeeze lemon juice into his wounds.

    4) Entangled – I have no idea. Maybe the crew stumbles into some kind of aggressive engagement between two other parties and it ends with Lister giving a series IV style monologue about how it’s wrong to murder everyone, or something.

    5) Dear Dave – Lister finds a letter to him from Kochanski, pre-accident. Cat is caught masturbating into a shoe.

    6) The Beginning – Flashback episode to Lister and Rimmer joining the JMC, or maybe a time travel one where they meet younger versions of themselves and in trying to avoid the accident they inadvertently cause it to happen. Return of Archie.

I predict none of these are right. But those would be my best guesses.

  • Without knowing anything about any of the episodes other than what was in the trailer:

Lemons: Could be related to the “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” saying? Wonder if the scene with Lister being down and Kryten asking him what is wrong could be from this episode.

  • 5) Dear Dave – Lister finds a letter to him from Kochanski, pre-accident.

GET OUT THA BELT WHILE YE CAN!

If Trojan isn’t about Red Dwarf getting malware then someone else needs to write it.

  • Oooh, I see what we’re doing here. Okay, my turn! Pure speculation, of course, having heard no spoilers at all so if I’m right on any of it, it’s luck (or genius… ahem…) So my uninformed guesses:

Trojan – as others have speculated above, my best bet is it involves some kind of virus either infesting the Dwarf or a ship they encounter.

Fathers and Suns – saw the recording so won’t say nowt.

Lemons – as there have been lots of hints at this being a time travel episode, and after a few things Doug said on Twitter a few decades ago, I’m thinking ‘lemons’ refers to a lemon battery and maybe the crew get stuck out of their own time somewhere and need to devise a way to get back. And maybe we get some Jesus, that seems to be a popular theory.

Entanglement – as others have speculated, perhaps somehow the crew or some members of it becoming genetically fused together in some way

Dear Dave – probably a take on “dear John” so the idea that Lister finds a you’re-dumped letter from Kochanski (from before the accident, or maybe before she abandoned ship) is an obvious possibility. That doesn’t seem like a plot for the episode as much as a trigger or B-plot though so really no idea at all on this one.

The Beginning – scary sounding title. Love the idea of revisiting the events of The End in some way from a different perspective or going back in time somehow to see the characters before they boarded the ship. The mention of “some corridors in Shepperton” as a filming location in the set report makes me think there are parts of this one set on Earth, maybe involving big cheeses from the JMC? Maybe some kind of sinister plot or twist that changes how we view what happened on Red Dwarf (the accident etc). Will be gutted if it does turn out the be the last episode but would still be thankful they finally got the chance to make a final episode with a bit of foreknowledge.

  • Lemons – hasn’t it been confirmed the this is the one where they’re stuck in AD 23 or something, trying to make a battery out of lemons? And it’s revealed that someone is actually ***** at the end, which might be the most widely guessed spoiler in the history of spoilerism?

    As for the others….

Trojan: Lister finds a two pound black ribbed knobbler in a draw, which has become sentient over the course of 3 million years. He forms a physical relationship with it.

Fathers and Suns: Cat has sex with a star on the brink of supernova. The resulting explosion creates a nebula full of baby suncats.

Entangled: Rimmer gets his pubes caught in the mechanism of an antique clock.

Dear Dave: Kryten loses one of his legs and learns to play the piano, writing a spoken word album dedicated to Lister.

The Beginning: The first in a series of restrospectives with Norman Lovett. There will be one in each series. This one deals with his hatred for the early years of the show and all those who wronged him in the late 1980s. Interspersed with clips of animal cruelty and public executions.

    1. I think Trojan will be about…

    2. I think Fathers and Suns will be about…

    3. I think Lemons will be about…

    4. I think Entangled will be about…

    5. I think Dear Dave will be about…

    6. I think The Beginning will be about…

  • Trojan: Courtesy of a hastily deleted Howard Goodall tweet, I know at a basic level what is involved in this episode. So I won’t say nowt except I find it amazing that they can do a story like this 25 years on. It seems like an idea taken out of Series IV for some reason.

Fathers and Suns: Lister gives himself a Fathers Day card and carries around a jar. Red Dwarf flies into the event horizon of a sun.

Lemons: They travel back to AD23 using an IKEA time machine and need to make a lemon battery to power the time machine back.

Entangled: I think this is the episode in which Rimmer is gambled away in a poker game.

Dear Dave: I think this is the one where Lister is depressed in the trailer.

The Beginning: No idea. Expect perhaps one element of the episode.

  • The Beginning: No idea. Expect perhaps one element of the episode.

I’m guessing that one was my bad.

  • Balancing plot and humour is the main thing (also, actually including some of either :P).

VIII was full of pretty rubbish plots and the focus was mainly on humour (though, sadly, that humour wasn’t very good either…). VII was much better on the plot front (the ideas Doug had were great) but, again, not particularly funny or compelling enough…

  • My local Burton store had a Dave leaflet holder at the till displaying the Red Dwarf X logo. Was rather a nice moment!

  • EDIT: Went to Burtons. Found some Dave promo cards, but nothing Red and Dwarfy. :/

It’s terrible their range of bespoke clothing that they dont tailor for more bolder customer colour choices and leg sizes.
