Proper, full details for Trojan online featured image

Right, this is quite a biggie. The official synopsis, cast list and a spoilerific picture for episode one have surfaced over on The British Comedy Guide. As it’s proper press stuff, posted on an established and reliable site, we’re covering it. But if you want to remain completely pure for the first episode, don’t click that link! Our analysis is below the cut.

OK, then. It’s out there – Howard Rimmer is in Trojan, and he’s played by Mark Dexter. Look, there’s even a picture! This shows the pair wearing matching uniforms, and yes, matching Hs. It also shows that they really do look like brothers, and the performance from Mark Dexter matches this. Elsewhere, Susan Earl is confirmed as playing a character called Sim Crawford, while Lucy Newman-Williams and Bryan Bounds play All Droid Jayne and All Droid Bob. We’re not sure the parenthesis clarifying exactly what these characters are is strictly necessary, but hey – that’s out there as well now. There are shopping channel presenters in this episode.

There’s also a bunch of ‘various voice’ actors; probably for the best that there’s still some information that’s still not explicitly clear! All this seems like the sort of official information capsules that get sent to listings magazines and the like, and that’s sort of why we’ve covered it. However, it does seem very early for this stuff to be coming out – has Orange Mark jumped the gun? Can we expect similar stuff for Fathers and Suns around this time next week? We just don’t know.

I’m very intrigued to see what people make of all this, but do remember our spoiler policy– you can react to this new information, and speculate on things that you don’t know about, but please don’t reveal anything you learned by attending a recording.

  • I notice that the picture on the left is credited to the British Broadcasting Corporation – surely a mistake! I am now a bit more spoiled than I wanted to be but I read the script for Psirens before broadcast so at least I’ve always been a massive twat.

  • Okay, so now his name is out there I can say it: Mark Dexter gives one of the best guest performances in Red Dwarf ever.

    Ever.

    Ever.

  • Those costumes look fantastic. I genuinely can’t wait to see the show in HD, everything so far is pointing towards gorgeous visuals. The hype for Dexter’s performance has been going on for a bit now as well, looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Also worth noting that the site also has a new press shot of the boys in the drive room, but it’s very small.

  • It will be interesting to see how Rimmer reacts to one of his brothers actually on screen. Looking back, no matter how shitty they were to him, he still looked up to them and had admiration for them. Just take this quote from ‘Polymorph’:

“Just the usual boyhood pranks, you know: apple-pied beds, and black-eyed telescope … and, one time, they even hid a small land mine in my sand pit. They took it from my father’s gun cabinet. I mean, how were they supposed to know it was going to go off? Marvellous guys.”

I hope Rimmer manages to end this episode by getting one up on his brother.

Also, I’ve known Howard Rimmer was in this for a while now. I remember Howard Goodall tweeting “Howard Rimmer?” to Doug Naylor.

I wonder if Frank Rimmer having already appeared in an episode was what made Doug go for Howard instead (he suggested Frank at the last Dimension Jump).

  • Love that uniform. A delightful spin on the DS9 / TNG movie uniform.

Thank you, I wasn’t the only one who thought immediately of “First Contact” perhaps, then. LOL

Looking forward to the episodes when they make their way across the ocean!

  • Bloody hellfire. Between all these reviews out there, we’re going to have the entire bloody first episode down pat by 4th October, aren’t we?

    I’m not complaining. Spoilers ahoy!

  • Seeing as I’m not here and definitely not reading this…

Howard… How can he be in this story? How did he end up a hologram (well, yeah, dying would be a good bet)?? What’s Rimmer doing with the same uniform as him??? Why am I even thinking about this 3 weeks before broadcast????

Right…honestly, that’s it. No more looking at stuff…

  • It’s possible I spoiled series VI for myself by reading the smegazine, BTL, an entire series synopsis and the script for Psirens but… it didn’t actually spoil anything because watching the episodes as broadcast has a magical quality about it and nothing can rain on my parade October 4th!

Since you’re not here, you can’t read this and I can’t be writing it, but … weren’t Rimmer’s brothers captains who basically killed their entire crews? So if everybody dies and a ship’s computer is programmed to boot up the senior officer as the hologram, that would mean the captain, right? So does this mean Howard’s been tromping around this ship while it floated out to deep space for all 3 million years?

  • Oh good, now I can finally stop panicking from when we put that techie steadicam video on YouTube and version 1 had the cast list for ep 1 stuck on the side with Mark’s character name on and we realised after it had been up for an hour then had to frantically pixellate it out and reupload… fun times.

  • I was amazed how few people caught that one, I have to say. I think I saw it mentioned… once, somewhere? Possibly in a comment, or possibly on a forum. Really surprised it wasn’t picked up on more widely.

AHHHH, is THAT why it was pulled? Now it all makes sense.

  • Oh goodness gracious all this information is making me want to jump up and down like a little girl far more than it should.

    Hurry up October!

  • Sounds cool. He’s Howard Howard Howard Rimmer, we get to find out more about himmer.
He’s played by someone called Mark Dexter, and Seb says he is the best guester.

So the ace thing was a little Better Rimmer in themes, be interesting to see what Howard is like, given whats been said about the brothers over the years. Did we see young howard in timeslides at all? Which is the brother in the novel inside the game?

  • > Did we see young howard in timeslides at all? Which is the brother in the novel inside the game?

Possibly but it’s only Frank (played by Chris) that is identified. Frank is also the brother inside BTL who steals Juanita (for a bit).

  • Also, if you click in the other episodes it shows a pic of them on the Midget, different from the other official pics seen. Nice!

  • I’m actually hoping for a sweet ending for Rimmer (correction, Arnold Rimmer) in this episode. All his life he has carried the bitterness regarding his brothers but apart from a couple of times seeing childhood pranks its never actually been established that his brothers did hate him.

The best thing for me would be if Howard is really happy to see Arnold. I expect a tear-jerker ending where Howard sacrifices himself so that Arnold can survive.

  • Aside from the novels, most of Rimmer’s references have been to Frank. It was Frank who we saw getting married to Janine in ‘Timeslides’. I think there’s a reference to John and Frank in ‘Dimension Jump’, where we learn John is a test pilot for the Space Corps.

  • Slightly off topic, there are FUCKING HUGE posters for Series X on the London Underground.

(Presumably throughout the Underground. There’s certainly one at Highgate station as I saw it with my eyes this morning. I would have asked the station staff if I could scrape it off the wall and keep it once they’d finished with it…but it’d be bigger than my house.)

  • >Slightly off topic, there are FUCKING HUGE posters for Series X on the London Underground

    Ooh, which station(s)?

Sorry, the drool has sort of stunted keyboard usefulne

  • There’s a confirmed sighting at Harrow-On-The-Hill, too. Doug says there are sixteen in all.

I DEMAND THAT G&T PUTS TOGETHER AN RDX POSTER LONDON UNDERGROUND MAP, POST-HASTE.

  • Strange how old-school that picture looks. I keep seeing it as a promo shot from a previous series. Do you know what I mean?

  • Strange how old-school that picture looks. I keep seeing it as a promo shot from a previous series. Do you know what I mean?

yep i was thinking the same thing!

  • I haven’t seen it mentioned so maybe it’s new, but I saw the trailer (only caught the second half after “me and him and him”) this morning on Dave and there was a seen replacing the papadom bit, Lister was floating just outside the ship and asking for Kryten to open the door as he forgot his keys. It was quite funny.

  • Just caught the new trailer on Dave Ja Vu. That final scene (plus the inclusion of the start date) is the only real change. Excellent. :)

  • Like has already been stated but those uniforms are very Star Trek VIII-X movie era style. I wonder if that is consinous choice to continue the theme of Trek Movie uniforms, after the Enlightenment’s Star Trek II-VII styling from Holoship. does this mean if we ever see another brother, it’ll be either Enterprise style blue jumpsuits or Kirk era Gold shirt…though be sure it’s not Red!

  • Okay, so now his name is out there I can say it: Mark Dexter gives one of the best guest performances in Red Dwarf ever.

    Ever.
    Ever.

    Does anyone think that now?

  • Seb is certainly never averse to hyperbole, but if you extend “one of” to “top ten”, then yeah.

  • Yeah, I stand by that. In terms of what he has to do, which let’s face it was a pretty difficult thing, he utterly nails it.

There’s at least one in XI that I like even more, though.

  • It takes considerable talent to portray the older brother of a man thirteen years older than you. Wonderful work, Mark.
