GO. This week we have a Rimmer and Lister scene, showing them sifting through the contents of what can only be a post pod delivery.   More thoughts on this and other bits after the jump.

First, THE CLIP. In a scene that definitely brings to mind a certain scene from Better Than Life, Lister and Rimmer are sifting through the contents of a post pod.  After a discussion about who might have more mail (just like Better Than Life), Rimmer finds a letter for him that actually turns out to be a notice of money owed (just like Better Than Life).  Derivativeness aside it’s still a funny scene, with Chris especially bringing in the lols.  Interestingly, the ‘countdown’ theme of these weekend repeats also seem to apply to these episode clips.  Make of that what you will.

In today’s first ad break we were also treated to two new Dave bumpers, one featuring Rimmer cleaning the Dave logo and another with the Cat spraying it with his own piss and declaring it his.  AMUSING.  Presumably there’ll be another two of these to spot throughout the weekend.  My predictions are Kryten will fuck the logo with his groinal attachment and Lister will pour curry sauce all over it and then eat it, the silly slob.

Finally, the main series trailer has been tweaked slightly.  Now, instead of ending with Lister finding a poppadom in his card, it is replaced with a short scene of him trapped outside the ship without his keys, signalling to Kryten to let him in.  It’s definitely a much stronger ending to the trailer, and one I greatly approve of.  Nice effect, too.

Addendum: Clare Grogan is shit in Psirens.

  • It *does* go a bit, well, Chris Barrie at one point. But it certainly made me laugh. And did we see the Rimmer ‘Dave’ ident at the start of the break? And the RDX trailer that has *just* come on?

  • Another new clip just shown on TV! Lister in his spacesuit trying to get Kryten to open the door because he has forgotten his key.

  • My digibox went a bit bonkers during the Dave trailer but I just about managed to see the Lister forgetting his key moment. Rimsey polishing the Dave logo was nice.

I think Rimmer has behaved in this way before. The example I can think of is in Waiting For God – ‘he’s such a child that boy/I’ve got bagsies’

  • I’m expecting the Lister bumper at the beginning of Legion’s ad break, Kryten at the end. Just saying. Last week, the model shots were in the ad breaks of eps 1 and 2 of series VIII, so, you know…TRADITION.

  • Can’t click on that link right now…is it the ‘if I were I rich man’ bit from Timeslides?

    *clicks on link*

    Oh. Well, it *could’ve* been.

  • This clip is definitely my favourite, so far. Chris really made me laugh and I thought he was really good in the scene. Felt more er… Rimmer-y to me! Compared to last week’s clip anyway.

I didn’t know they replayed the trailer with an extra clip, I immediately went to my computer after I saw the codeword. Thank god I recorded it on Sky plus. Must go and rewind it, now!

  • Judging by the science equipment in the background, it would seem the clip of Lister in space forgetting his keys is from ‘Entangled’.

  • on a side note, im quite enjoying watching VI. Legion is one of my fave episodes. i may be a minority but i dont care :)

  • I’m baffled when people say they don’t like VI. It’s MAGNIFICENT. Psirens is a bit weak, but it’s far from terrible. The remainder are all superb, and Legion, Gunmen and Out of Time are all among the absolute best.

  • Seeing a couple of negative comments above, coupled with the regular lack of optimism for new Red Dwarf that I keep coming across on the internet , I tried to go into this clip pessimisticaly to try and gauge how the general ‘Joe Public’ are going to receive RDX. But I just loved it. This clip coupled with Cat’s “…except for me, him and him” line just scream classic Red dwarf to me.

  • i dont understand why some people are moaning about the clip.. it seems to be a playback of older series yet hold jokes from the later series! it made me laugh which is good. i love some of the older series but some episodes like ‘Timeslides’ etc i didnt find funny at all really..

  • Yep this is totally in character and brilliantly funny. In other news there is also a giant RDX poster in Edinburgh’s Waverley Station. Right next to all the arrivals/departures screens as well where people HAVE to look.

  • Am I the only person who remembers Rimmer acting exactly like this on occasions in the past?

    Notably: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VISq4os4BVc

I wonder if it’s seen as odd because Rimmer looks notably different with an extra 13-20 years packed on, doing the same type of action. Just a hypothesis, observing people’s responses?

  • On another side note: From the new issue of SFX (dated November), which has arrived through my door this morning:

A four page Red Dwarf X article: http://yfrog.com/oc65601577j
Plus the full page RDX poster, as seen in Viz recently: http://yfrog.com/odm3ibpdj
The best issue of SFX for a while. :)

Thank you! Shall have to check the Barnes & Noble later! (The pic of them in costume as themselves is brill.)

  • Excellent work, si! Those rehearsal pictures look ace. Any chance of a full scan so I don’t have to buy it? ;)

  • Still my favourite line from VI

Kryten: “He’s giving us 5 hanaka to decide.”

    Rimmer: “How long’s a hanaka?”

Kryten: “Curiously enough, it’s exactly the same as one Earth minute.”

Cat: “5 hanaka? That only gives us 28 hours!”

  • Excellent work, si! Those rehearsal pictures look ace. Any chance of a full scan so I don’t have to buy it? ;)

Maybe. I’ll see what my non-technical-sort-self can muster over the weekend.

  • It’s a funny joke. The timing is excellent, they don’t dawdle on the joke as they might have done in VIII to stretch out the gag. not seen the trailer with the LIster in the spacesuit but I did see that scene being filmed. So i know it’s a good un!

I don’t see how Rimmer is anymore out of sorts here than he has been in, say, Queeg with the Skutters, He does go a bit Ace/David Coleman, though.

  • this latest trailer was my first proper laugh! i knew it would come eventually. ive smiled at the others but this one gave me an actual laugh!

  • Hmm.. I think if they’d cut it after he says ‘the man the myth the legend’ the clip would be better paced, on first viewing I found myself holding back from cringing. Second viewing was much better and I must say I enjoyed the clip, best one they’ve released so far… really does feel like classic Dwarf… none of that series 8 tosh.

  • Welll I LOLed. I think people feel it’s out of character coz it’s not bitter, bile-y Rimmer but he seems slightly more affable and self-aware. To be honest, that’s a bit of character development that’s been occuring slowly but surely since series I anyway. Spending twenty five years with Lister, there’s got to be a bit of cameraderie and some kind of bond between them.

We saw it develop most during series VIII but it felt off then, as it was the old Rimmer “how he used to be” and so hadn’t earned that relationship with Lister. Here, they seem like bickering pals. That’s okay with me, as long is there is still some of that trumped up neurotic complete-and-utter bastard Rimmer in there somewhere too. The world loves a bastard.

  • This weeks teaser certainly has an old school vibe about it, sweet! looking forward to seeing the new bumpers and revised trailer with Lister & Kryten scene, once they hit the Internet. Dave’s annoyingly missing of my Freeview currently, hopefully it will return in time…

  • Re Dave being missing off your Freeview., Squeaky – worth noting that Dave, Yesterday and Really are all changing channel numbers next week. Dave will be 12, Yesterday will be 19 and Really will be number 17. Thought you might like to know. ;)

  • It does seem to be an out of character moment for Rimmer, but isn’t that rather nice? I like that after all these years, he’s finally starting to let a few of his defenses down, and he and Lister can just be lads being idiots.

  • Cheers for that info Si, was worried i’d have to got to the torrents to acquire the series, I’m pleased to know things will soon return to normal.

  • I have problems with Chris’s occasional overacting, but that scene aint one of them. Think it’s great. The scene it reminded me of was “Come on you reds” in Parallel Universe. But yes, there’s also shades of it the checkers game. It’s Rimmer being overtly pleased with himself and exaggerating his emotions IN CHARACTER to an audience (usually Lister) so as to make them feel small. He’s not playing to us, he’s playing to him.

As for the similarities to Better Than Life; not bothered if they do similar setups, more bothered if they just recycle plots.

(That said, I do have a big question mark over the plot of this episode from the 15 minutes or so that was filmed in front on audience).

  • what about in timeslides when rimmer was singing ‘yes o yes o yes if i were a rich man…’ waving his arms about to himself..

i think it was fine, Rimmer does random things like that time to time, and like what others have said, he has bound to have bonded or lightened up a little while being with lister and company for so long. (not counting the hundreds of years away in Rimmerworld on his own lol)

  • Yes, Rimmer admittedly does do random things from time to time, however I remember all the previous times being funny. I hate to say it but there was something off about the performance. Don’t get me wrong I loved the clip and I think it’s great Dwarf, but something didn’t feel Rimmer-y.

  • I’m having no problem with it. Rimmer will do anything to win, and when he does (which is rare) he’s sure to throw it in your face and never let you forget it. But Rimmer never wins. That’s Rimmer to me in a nutshell.

  • I wonder what Rimmer this is? the original Hologram returning? or a hologram of the nano-resurrected Rimmer? or a completely new version? maybe a corrupted holly backup? (could help with explaining the ‘aged’ look.. as the only plausible idea i have thought of could be that he got reconfigured so his age was relative to Listers so Lister didnt feel old…

  • Chris Barrie’s delivery of that punch line is brilliant. I’ve watched it quite a lot today and it keeps making me laugh a lot.

  • Everything about today is a massive two thumbs up from me. There’s just one thing that slightly bothers me – over at Gazpacho Soup there’s a photo of the cat photocopying his arse. Surely Fry and Laurie had the last word on this with ‘photocopying my genitals with’ 20 years ago.

  • Out of that set of Cat pictures, one of them is apparently from a deleted scene. If I was to guess, I’d say it’s that one.

  • Laughing the most I’ve laughed at Red Dwarf in ages (not counting being there), or any comedy on TV. I did feel a bit like it was chris not rimmer at first, almost as if we were watching them at dimension jump or something, but im just setttlng back into audience dwarf after watching back to earth so much, and I realise reading this thread it is in character, he just sounded near to david coleman but then I realised, it’s rimmer doing a tv commentator talking us through the WIN. So it’s fine and a nice pitched in joke really.

Cant wait to see the revised trailer. Yes the locked out scene is from Engtantled saw it filmed, and loved it then. A tiny peice of window set was there on the right of set, and craig is skateboarding sideways with 2 helpers. Brilliant use of the space in shepperton to achieve something so funny old school style.

  • Well I found that clip absolutely hilarious, I cannot stop watching it, i have very high hopes for the series so far, not to mention I also enjoyed fathers and suns when I saw it recorded so I don’t think I’ll be disappointed.

  • Everyone seems to have enjoyed the episode they watched seems to be taking solace in that being at least ‘one episode’. Trouble is all 6 episodes are like that. Feels good doesn’t it?

….. I’m pretty sure the joke there is supposed to be “CAT scan”

/waits for no reply since nobody ever does

  • While I buy Craig as Lister completely, I can understand why some people are feeling Chris (admit it, you’d all like to :P) rather than Rimmer in these scenes. Though it IS just the cast getting older and Rimmer naturally developing. I actually prefer it when Rimmer is the one acting like this rather than Lister’s supposed ‘classic’ winding up of Rimsy (BtE showed that it just doesn’t work anymore, though I wouldn’t be averse to X proving otherwise)

Incidentally, the line ‘…like two mature adults, instead of behaving like two schoolboys who have to bet on everything’ It sounds wrong that he says ‘two’ twice… Again this is being sooooo picky, but it makes the line sound clumsier than it needs to…..*sigh* it’s fucking RED DWARF!!! It’s BACK!!!! Oct 4th, 9pm, Dave.

  • You only have to go back as far as the “voice unit packs up” bit in back to earth to see Rimmer can act silly when mocking people.

  • Cat Scan. That works. But yes, I, too, cringed a little when I saw that photo Friday morning.

Yeah, I mean, I had a similar reaction when I first saw it and had to think for a while. Actually, my first worry is it was some elaborate toilet scene – my brain should clearly not be let out on its own that early in the a.m.

(After I posted before, I thought *Well, Si’s replied to me in the past, I shouldn’t bitch.* I should’ve had faith you might here, LOL.)

  • Interestingly, the ‘countdown’ theme of these weekend repeats also seem to apply to these episode clips.

i dont understand this sentance. Can someone explain it to me im a thick cunt and ive not been watching dave.

Last weeks clip was from ‘The Beginning’. This weeks clip was from ‘Dear Dave’. Dave are showing Series 1-VIII backwards on weekends acting as a countdown. So while they are counting down in series, they are counting down the clips to ‘Trojan’ it seems.

  • Although that might prove tricky being as how, after this weekend, they’ve only got two more weekends before the series starts.

  • Did anyone see the new clip this morning on Dave with Lister and Rimmer discussing areolas?

  • And while I was typing that there was a competition advertised with Burtons to celebrate Red Dwarf X which got cut off short.

  • Did anyone see the new clip this morning on Dave with Lister and Rimmer discussing areolas?

I missed this! Which episode was it during?

And while I was typing that there was a competition advertised with Burtons to celebrate Red Dwarf X which got cut off short.

Yes, I saw that, what a low-rent, tacky way to treat your flagship show. Fucking appalling.

  • I missed all that, too! Fuck knows how, I was watching from 11am till 1pm. :/

I noticed, though, some (sort of) new edits of the trailer. One was the full trailer, with the ‘poppadom’ line as before, but with added start date, and another was a shortened version of the same, cutting out the Kryten/Lister exchange from the start.

  • It was early so I think it must have been in holoship. Or maybe even in the ad break for “Crash” before that.

  • Hmmm….nope, not for me.

Performances far too broad here. And both the situation and gag have been done in the show before…and far better.

But others like it. And it’s not awful.

  • Am I the only person who remembers Rimmer acting exactly like this on occasions in the past?Notably: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VISq4os4BVcI wonder if it’s seen as odd because Rimmer looks notably different with an extra 13-20 years packed on, doing the same type of action. I think so – people aren’t yet entirely used to a 50 something Rimmer. I know there’s “BTE”, but he didn’t really have any silly but funny scenes like this in that.

This clip’s obviously deliberately reminiscent of the scene in “BTL”, but I don’t think that demonstrates lack of ideas, more a conscious hook to remind the casual RD fan how great the Rimmer / Lister dynamic can be. :)

  • Incidentally, I wonder how many of those letters used in this scene are Movie funding correspondence…;)

  • I’ve been watching Dave all day to try and catch that clip again and it hasn’t been shown. I’m starting to think it was shown by mistake. Next weeks clip maybe.

  • According to someone on the official site it was shown around 30-40 minutes ago on Dave. Should be on Dave Ja Vu in the next few minutes.

  • On Freeview it is just a place holder at the moment. Airing for two hours to save the channel space for something else in the future.

  • Not a great clip to be honest. Joke reminds me of one in OFAH – and it worked only slightly better then.
