Third weekend RDX clip: UNLOCK with ‘LEMONS’. News Posted by John Hoare on 22nd September 2012, 11:13 GO. Another short Rimmer and Lister sequence, just like last week. A rather nice little clip, where the follow-up reiteration of the joke enhances rather than RUINS it. It’s also exactly the kind of joke where the audience reaction adds some nice much-needed punctuation to the lines. These little moments are certainly being done far better than any time since Series VI. Here’s a little thought experiment, though – could you swap the dialogue around between Lister and Rimmer and still have the clip work? I think – oddly – it would…
The clips seem to get better and stronger each week, IMO. I probably said this about last week’s clip, but I’ll take that back and say it about this one: definitely my fav so far. Something about it had more of a classic feel to it, but at the same time still felt new and not rehashed or anything like that. Considering the code word, I take it this is clipped from ‘Lemons’?
Yes, a lovely little Rimmer/Lister clip, with a classic feel, and perfectly capturing both the characters and their relationship in just 30 seconds. If that’s not a sign of how good the writing and performances are this series, I don’t know what is. Incidentally, I saw a Tweet around half past ten saying that the code word would be Lemons. I couldn’t try it as I’m laptop-free at my flat, but now I’m annoyed that I could’ve seen that clip a good 40 minutes or so early. Oh well.
I was there for the recording of Lemons and, without getting into spoilers, I can say that this scene was *not* one of the ones recorded that night. Of course it might still be from that episode, but filmed and slotted in later, I dunno.
If I had to guess I would say it is from ‘Fathers and Suns’. If Rimmer is hearing this buzzing then it would give him reason to go and see the Medi-Bot which we say in a picture yesterday.
Whoops, double post. I shall take this opportunity, however, to reiterate how much I approve of this clip. I approve.
Just seemed like boring space filling crap to me the kind i hate so much in duct soup, but in context of a longer speach im sure it will be fine. Least favourite clip or bit so far from this new series.

I saw a Tweet around half past ten saying that the code word would be Lemons.. Found it. It was Tweeted by a @Ex_DigitalHeart at 9:18am. The code was shown during Camille this morning at 11:13am. So either Dave fouled up and showed the code earlier this morning when nobody was expecting it (not implausible), or this guy had some kind of insider knowledge. Curious. And if @Ex_DigitalHeart turns out to be someone on here, I imagine I may well be embarrassed/annoyed/inquisitive.
I find it very interesting to see the divided opinions on these clips. Some people seem to utterly despise some whilst others love them. I wonder if this will have an effect on how people view the series as a whole, do you think there will be a split in taste?
Ive loved all the clips.. i like that the series has something for everyone. From domestic sitcom episodes to action adventure episodes.
Chris and Craig look ten years younger in most of these clips. The wig definitely helps. Great clip, reminds me of Rimmer going video blind and thinking the mirror is a painting in series 1.
That’s a very similar joke to one used in The Impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson. Here… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHygwK1naYo I’ve noticed a few of the clips seeming very ‘familiar’ so far. Also, I saw this episode recorded and when the taping ended I was very puzzled when I recalled the above clip. I think something may have passed me by.
Seems like a pretty odd thing to single out for a 30 second clip, but it was definitely not bad! Yes, I nearly mentioned this. In an effort to not spoil any BIG WOOFERS, little sections like this which should just fly past are given a prominence they don’t really deserve, which makes it feel a bit odd.
Jon Culshaw doing an impression of Michael McIntyre? It’s like someone doing a shit…on a shit. Anyway. Yes, similar joke. The difference is that, in the RD clip it’s a short joke (which *hopefully* is part of the story rather than an excuse for witty banter), whereas in this it’s the basis of an entire sketch that lasts three times as long. And also Jon Culshaw isn’t in it.

I’m fairly sure every clip i’ve seen from an episode I saw recorded has either cut off before the bigger punch line or been a small part of a much larger scene.
*hopefully* is part of the story rather than an excuse for witty banter But… but Dave is the home of witty banter. :(
Hahahaha! Loved it! Wait…I think someone has bugged my house. It’s totally something that would’ve been said here. O.o
Chris and Craig look ten years younger in most of these clips. The wig definitely helps. Is it confirmed that Chris is wearing a piece? I’m not convinced, his hair does look more voluminous when he lets it grow and I’m thinking its a combination of that plus good styling. There was something odd about the shape of his hairstyle when I saw it in the flesh but I didn’t think it was a wig. Could be wrong, admittedly. By the way, ten years younger than what? What is your reference point? I think Chris looks more or less the same as Back to Earth while Craig is actually looking a little older and – um – fuller.
Younger than they do in the publicity photos (which, in high res, is how you can tell Rimmer has a wig on. You can see the hatching across the top of his head, from the horrible filter they added) but also younger than they did in Back to Earth. They both look less tired, more spirited and Chris’s performance seems very vibrant and energetic, like he was in the earlier shows. Certainly more so than in VII where he looked tired or VIII where he seemed like an embarrassing uncle.
I dont think chris is wearing a wig i just think its had alot of thickning products and then combed over and styled to look fuller
this is chris during early rehearsals which i doubt he would wear a wig for http://www.ganymede.tv/images/indepth/rdx_rehearsal.jpg i don’t see why added thicker and styled couldnt look like he does in rdx
Chris is not wearing a sodding wig! Makeup artists can make your hair look so much thicker than it actually is. Look at Hugh Laurie in House, and look at him in real life. In real life he is half bald, whereas in House without any wig he has a full head of hair. Look at Jeremy Clarkson in Top Gear outside stuff compared to his hair in the studio. Makeup artists are called artists for a reason.
Hugh Laurie does have a hair piece in House and I’d wager money Chris has one too. Confused why it matters or why people seem to object to it so much. Danny has a wig and Craig has extensions. It looks like a small piece though, just to give him a thicker & better defined hairline. Looks good on him, the tailor fit tunic also makes him look slimmer, the BTE outfit bunched up and was made from shitty material.
Oh. Googling it, it seems Hugh Laurie does wear a hairpiece in house. My mistake. Bloody good one though! Still don’t think Chris is wearing one there though.
‘Chris, I think your wig’s acting Craig off the screen!’ could soon be a DJJ line from the X commentary. ;)
Confused as to why you’re making a big deal out of it yourself. What does it matter? I’m not, but its weird how defensive people seem to be about the idea. But it’s a good idea production wise – helps the divide between actor and character. For instance, Die Hard 4. Willis looks like himself, not McClane, so it feels less like a Die Hard movie.

But it’s a good idea production wise – helps the divide between actor and character. For instance, Die Hard 4. Willis looks like himself, not McClane, so it feels less like a Die Hard movie. I wondered if he might have to get extensions of some kind, but being a person with curly hair myself, I know how much fluffing it helps. I don’t think he’s had to resort to that *yet*, but I can foresee that being an issue for him if his hair does get any thinner. (And as a woman, I bewail the passing of that beautiful head of hair he once had…as he probably does too, but for entirely different reasons. :/)
If he’s wearing a wig, it’s a good one. Chris is thinning up top, but it looks like he’s just let it grow out (in the places it can) and combed it over with a lot of gel and thickening product. The rehearsal pic isn’t a wig. >For instance, Die Hard 4. Willis looks like himself, not McClane, so it feels less like a Die Hard movie. Yes, I’ve heard this criticism of Die Hard 4 before. Incidentally, how do you define a Die Hard movie? A genuine question as I can’t beyond “Action movie with Bruce Willis playing a cop with the name John McClane”. >Mr.Stabby I want your old Avatar! Just. odd.
In this pic, he seems to have the same fullness of hair as he does in the show. And I doubt he’s wearing a wig there.
Confused why it matters or why people seem to object to it so much. Danny has a wig and Craig has extensions. Well, you’re the person who brought it up by stating it as a fact when it has not been confirmed that he is wearing a wig, it is an assumption you are basing on one photograph (which I have looked at, and still see no reason to think that he is). Nobody is objecting to the concept of the actor putting a wig on to play Rimmer, if anything I would prefer that to Chris wearing his hair the way he has done over the last ten years. No doubt he doesn’t have the full head of hair he once did, but I think the way he chooses to style it over the last few years (very short and flat) makes for such a contrast to how he used to look that people think he has badly thinned and receded – but when he does let it grow and it becomes wavier and fuller, it’s not THAT far removed from how it used to be, looks like old school Chris with a bit of natural, middle aged thinning. I remember when I first saw him with the really short hair on one of the Dwarf DVDs and thinking “Christ, how did he lose his hair so fast???” It wasn’t THAT far removed from VIII or the Tomb Raider films at that time. He just elected to start wearing it in a way that unfortunately made him look balder than he really is – or you could say, elected to stop wearing it in a way that made him look less bald than he is. Whichever.
Hair today gone tomorrow. More importantly I really hope we get to see a ‘Two Pound Black-Ribbed Nobbler’ monster in Trojan….
Alight, calm down you fucking serial killer. Confused why it matters or why people seem to object to it so much. Danny has a wig and Craig has extensions. tennorman, if you could possibly try a little harder to adhere to the unwritten “don’t be a cunt” rule, I would appreciate it.
Very nice clip, definitely feels very series II in its delivery. I’ve never had problem with wigs in long running shows/films, heck nearly majority of cast of Star Trek movies wear them!
Just because I’m a serial killer doesn’t make me a bad person. And if you didn’t have a Ghostbusters avatar, you would be next.
>heck nearly majority of cast of Star Trek movies wear them! Picard wears a bald cap? But it looks so real.
(And as a woman, I bewail the passing of that beautiful head of hair he once had…as he probably does too, but for entirely different reasons. :/) You and me both, though it seems to me, at least, like his own choice to keep it that shorn. He’s the one who has it cut like he’s an Army private when he’s not actively filming RD; my guess is no matter how lovely it was, it was a pain in the ass to style into some kind of submission, especially for a man. Hell, I’m just happy it looks auburn again in the new photos.
For what it’s worth I reckon Chris has had some “assistance” with his hair in the new series. Not a full wig, but a piece. The shot of him in that dentist’s chair thing looking a bit Kenneth Williams – that does not look like real hair there, sprouting up at the front. He is not outright bald or anything, but as has been noted (and clearly visible on DVD interviews0 he has thinned at the front so I think they are just padding that out. Time will tell, of course.
Definitely looks like some wig tape/make up stuff on the hairline in this shot (click to enlarge): http://rdgndotnet.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/9044a1.jpg Is not much to get upset over anyway, the guy is 52! If it serves the character, good luck to him.

Hell, I’m just happy it looks auburn again in the new photos. Curly hair is the hair from hell, hence the reason I cut off most of mine after 44 years. You just get tired to trying to tame the crap. As for hair color — I totally agree. Whoever decided that he needed to go so dark for VIII and BTE to cover the gray made a really bad choice. (I really wonder who makes that decision, anyway?) It looked wrong and very unnatural, especially his eyebrows. It looks perfectly natural, this time. I’ve never considered it auburn so much as light brown with reddish highlights, which I guess could be perceived as red. Of course, that’s just splitting hairs, I guess. (There I said it. *hangs head in shame*)
I think Chris looks great and it doesn’t harm the character to appear older. Cat, maybe, but not Rimmer.

(There I said it. *hangs head in shame*) Oh good, it’s not my eyesight failing – I thought it had sort of a shoe-polish look to it in 8 and BTE too. Not that much makes him look bad, but I’d rather see it gray. (You wait and see, it’ll turn out these were his own choices and NOT a makeup artist’s, and we’ll look like heels, LOL.)
but I’d rather see it gray. (You wait and see, it’ll turn out these were his own choices and NOT a makeup artist’s, and we’ll look like heels, LOL.) I think a little silver would’ve made it more believable, yes, but then time and continuity, blah, blah, blah, Rimmer’s vanity, etc., etc., fans whining about how old he would look…nobody would ever win here.

Yeah, well, plenty of “fans” are already whining about how old the guys look. Because that matters in comedy. You know, like how age matters on a woman reading the news. ;-)
Exactly, because realistically, no one should ever age, God forbid, and when they do, let’s talk about how badly they have.
And to reply to the OP’s original thought experiment … I think it could work in reverse, but I believe Rimmer’s reaction would be more snappy than amused, as Lister’s is here. L: D’you hear that? It’s a whining sound etc. etc. etc. R: Have you listened to yourself lately, miladdo? L: Sod off (listens) See, there it is again! R: And, you’re still talking. Or something like that.
TV and Satellite Weekly tomorrow… http://ow.ly/i/XFYG/original Looks SO MUCH LIKE the Back To Earth one! http://a2.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/108/9bb68e39d9a44b30bc89e908382981da/l.jpg

(There I said it. *hangs head in shame*) I’m with you on the auburn hair. I have brown with a tinge of red, and its a lovely shade if I do say so myself. Darkening it didn’t do Chris any favors. And he chose to shave his hair close to his head to tame the curls. Rimmer plastered his hair down within an inch of his life because Chris wanted it tamed, and it probably helped with the military aspects of the character. We saw Chris growing his hair out during rehearsals; it’s really none of our business if has any enhancements to his hair or not. Though personally, I don’t see anything other than his hair and the help of an expert makeup/hair artist. That’s what their paid for, after all. I know after I’m done at my stylist, my hair looks fuller and fantastic, but I try to do it and bleh. I think it’s very distinguished :)

Rimmer’s hair has always been a bit odd to me. In Series I – III it’s practically a bouffant – very curly and untamed, with the hair on the back of his head reaching down past his collar. By Series IV he’s been given a short back and sides with a bit of hair gel used to tame the curls. It gets a slightly bit more bouffant on top again in V. In VI & VII it’s become a sort of severe side parting, and in VIII it’s back to being a neat short back and sides. It appears the same, except thinner and greyer, in ‘Back to Earth’.
> Mr.Stabby I want your old Avatar! You’re welcome to it :P Thank you I think its a great avatar! I know someone that looks like it!
On the matter of the wonderful Dave channel, I was wondering if someone might be able to help me with this. I never really watch live TV as a student and as a result I have had to buy a TV aerial specifically so I can watch Red Dwarf X live. However, I’ve just tuned my TV using the new aerial and Dave is THE ONLY CHANNEL IT’S NOT PICKING UP. It’s even picking up all the HD channels and playing them perfectly. Might this be because Dave is changing channel sometime this week? I was at my neighbours the other day who’s room is practically the other side of my bedroom wall and he had the IV marathon playing in the background when I visited so I should definitely be able to pick it up. Anyone have an inkling as to what might be the problem?
Pull a Mr Bean and cut a man-size hole in your neighbours wall, and when they’re not looking sneak through it and watch the show.
Interesting. I’m in Wales but, as I said, my neighbour had it on on Sunday. Guess I’ll just keep retuning and hope for the best!
Yes, Freeview channel 12, changed from 19 last wednesday. Retuning/scanning for channels is the only thing I can suggest. I rescanned my mum’s TV three times before it acknowledged the change. :/
I know this doesn’t belong here. but of all the RDX posters and promotion, why are there no ads on sides of buses? They’d look great. Cue very poorly mocked-up version by me: See?
>I tend to find that most stuff advertised on buses is shite. Does that mean VIII was advertised on buses then? EDIT: Reading this back I feel I sounded kinda mean spirited. Sorry if offended.
I tend to find that most stuff advertised on buses is shite. Stuff I’ve seen advertised on buses includes, but is not limited to, Portal 2, Madagascar 3 (which was surprisingly enjoyable), and Doctor Who. So there’s that theory out the window, then.
>Does that mean VIII was advertised on buses then? It was in reference to Kermode and Mayo often bringing up the “Bus posters” on their radioshow/podcast, actually. >So there’s that theory out the window Yes. I mean no.
Back on the subject of Rimmer’s hair, the following is a quote from the Radio Times interview… >“Well, my sons have watched reruns of the old series,” says Barrie. “And the older one was looking at the screen and then back at me and he said, ‘Dad, are you going to do another one of these?’ So I nodded and he said, ‘But what are they going to do about you?’ “I think he was talking about the thickness of my hair. Back in 1988, I could produce Rimmer’s ice-cream-cone hair all by myself. But no amount of hair-thickening cream was going to work this time around, so I had to go to a special clinic.” “It was him that gave Wayne Rooney the phone number,” says John-Jules, getting in on the gag. Interesting, Not clear if he’s kidding or serious though.

Why would he joke? If even Chris is admitting it in interviews I think the question is pretty much settled. We really needed a dedicated ‘Rimmer’s Hair/Wig/Weave/Whatever’ thread for this!
Why would he joke? If even Chris is admitting it in interviews I think the question is pretty much settled. He would joke because getting hair implants for a three month job is the act of an insane person. Also, he’s a comedian.
The person who wrote the article thinks its a GAG. That’s good enough for me to believe that he wasn’t being 100% serious.
Are you being serious? DJJ is “getting in on the gag”, as in contributing to it. The gag that Chris started by saying he went to a clinic.
More to the point; if it is a piece, why did he waste time going to a clinic to have treatment? What he says in the interview (which I maintain is a joke) doesn’t match up with the idea that he’s wearing a wig.
The Wayne Rooney bit is the gag. It’s a piece, believe it. *facepalm* Okay, whatever helps you sleep at night.
Re today’s clip on Dave. The blog says it’ll be the clip we’ve seen of Lister telling Kryten that he’s lost Starbug and Rimmer, but the guy who correctly Tweeted ‘lemons’ at twenty past nine last saturday tweeted ‘wibbly’ at twenty past nine this morning. It would seem to be right…
