RDX DVD/BR TOS Overview News Posted by Danny Stephenson on 9th November 2012, 21:00 Yes, TOS have updated with details of what we’re going to be getting in our letterboxes on or around November 19th (or not if you didn’t pre-order them, you lazy bastards)… The menus look amazing, obviously, as we’ve come to expect, but of particular note is the lack of episode commentaries, galleries or Goodall’s isolated music cues which is quite a shame, but on the other hand we do have ‘We’re Smegged’, Nathan Cubitt’s near 2-hour behemoth documentary “with teeth” on the making of the series, so we can’t complain really.
A special, model-related treat… but we’re keeping this one a secret! You’ll have to watch the DVD to find out… Seb, you utter bastard.
Can’t wait to watch the making of, but there’s some strange punctuation going on in its menu listing: “We’re Smegged The Making Of Colon”? What, no weblink? Maybe you’ll be able to reach it by following a menu link labelled “Series VIII cliffhanger resolution”.
I personally find the DVD menus a bit disappointing compared to previous releases, they don’t look like as much love went into them, be it for budgetary reasons or otherwise I’m not too keen on them at the moment. Shall reserve proper judgement until I can see them on the big screen, however.
Still pretty disappointed that there’s no episode commentary since those were always a highlight for me and its a shame to lose them after 9 sets with them. Hope I don’t sound like an ungrateful git.
Well, naturally, I’d like to see everything that everyone else has mentioned – commentaries, music cues, model shots, plus maybe the Dave promo stuff etc – but that’s what comes with being spoiled by the earlier releases. A two hour ‘making-of-plus’ documentary is the kind of thing some *movie* releases can only dream of. I ordered my bluray a while ago, hoping it arrives next saturday, like the old ones used to. :)

Shall reserve proper judgement until I can see them on the big screen, however. I’ve never, ever liked the tendency toward mystery-meat menus on the RD DVDs, or the fact that it takes ages to get through to the episodes/features (with special hatred for the VI disc that you can’t skip at all due to the easter-egg point). Just give me a ****ing list of stuff and let me pick what I want instantly! (In that respect, the Bodysnatcher discs were by far the best)
I’ve got a feeling the special treat model shot will be the closing over head shot of Red Dearf ala I-IV. I wonder if in a few years, say if/when series XI appears we will get a Special Edition of this series, with all the standard features in place, also by then the cast could give more reflective commentaries. apart from Documentary and Deleted Scenes, this feels like a DVD box set like Doctor Who series 7 part 1 and then next year before series 8, we will get complete series 7 with more extras included.
A lot of people seem very optimistic about a later “special edition” release of Red Dwarf X in a year or two, but I can’t imagine why.

Yep. X onwards will probably get released on the incoming 4K format with extra juicy goodness.
Maybe they could still do commentaries, but do them separately and have them available for download or something. RiffTrax can do it. I don’t see why Red Dwarf can’t. Of course, someone will probably tell me…
A lot of people seem very optimistic about a later “special edition” release of Red Dwarf X in a year or two, but I can’t imagine why. It also works on the assumption that the lack of commentaries is due to the unavailability of the cast or some such issue. I’d be willing to be however that it’s BBC Worldwide saying that they aren’t interested in them. A lot of their other releases are going this way and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if that were the case.
Considering that RDX and, indeed, BtE were shot in 4K, there’s always that possibility of a re-release in, say, 5 years’ time. Whatever…I simply cannot wait for the Blu-ray. Perhaps the most satisfying thing is the idea that, in buying it, I’m directly contributing towards a prospective XI.
Yep I reckon the new series will sell quite well due to it being out so soon after the series has aired and being trailed at the end of each episode. It was also far better received than BTE so I expect it to sell better than that. Quite a few people, myself included, have also seemed to be purchasing the show on iTunes throughout the run. BBC Worldwide’s most pay-to-download show of this quarter was it? It may have even had an effect on the purchase of older series. And then there’s the number of people who will have watched it on the Dave site who had to sit through a slew of adverts at the beginning. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that I reckon the show has done really quite well outside of the broadcast slot and Dave/BBCWW will have probably made a few bob.
I love the interactive menus :) will there be an easter egg that takes you to another interactive menu? ( like in starbug the easter egg that took you to the AR suite)
There’s no Easter Egg this time round, I’m afraid. You can’t fool us, Patrick… *gets ready to look everywhere for hidden Cast Commentary easter egg*

There is an Easter Egg. Highlight the kebab in the drive room and press select. A video of Seb slowly shaking his head will appear.
On the Bluray version you can adjust the speed by pressing LEFT and RIGHT on the remote, and you can make him say “Cunts” by pressing the Red button.
I heard if you touch the logo on one of the vending machines, you get an 18 minute clip of the Medi-Bot singing Tongue Tied.
If you press play on the chapter of Dear Dave where Lister fucks a vending machine you get a feeling of utmost embarrassment.
So my Blu Ray dispatched this morning. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! There have been some great blu ray releases recently but none have had me more excited than this. Can’t wait.
So my Blu Ray dispatched this morning. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Blimey. Looks like people should be getting this by Saturday, then.
Things usually arrive on the Saturday before with Play. It’s what I was hoping for. Sometimes they even arrive on the Friday.
My DVD (which I ordered at Play.com) dispatched at 3am! Fingers crossed I get it on Saturday, or – dare I say at the risk of sounding like a cheeky git – Friday!
I’ve just gone on about my orders being dispatched over in the forum. I forgot all about this article. I look a right dozy cunt now, don’t I?
Cancelled my preorder with Amazon because they usually get it to me a couple of days after release. Will be going round the shops first thing Monday morning. Should’ve gone to Play.com like you all said.
Due to an oversight, I only pre-ordered my Bluray yesterday (from Play), and it was dispatched almost immediately. HMV also seem to be posting stuff now.
Commentaries are the most important extra in my opinion (whatever the actual content, film, tv etc), so it’s a shame there are none. Oh well, per-ordered anyway.

I’d agree with you if we weren’t talking about Red Dwarf. We’ve always been spoiled with our releases, and it’s obvious why they werent’ able to do cast commentaries this time round. Quick DVD release turnaround, two members of cast unable to do it due to other work commitments, so i’m not annoyed as I know they didnt’ deliberately hold back, and one thing Red Dwarf (and by extension Doug) doesn’t do is hold back things purposefully. Other productions have, and still do for the express purpose of double, triple or just downright insane multiple dippings (I’m looking at you Python…) We have got a 2- hour documentary detailing this SERIES of Red Dwarf, you’re lucky if you get a documentary of an entire RUN of a series such as Friends, or Seinfeld, or any other popular shows.
All true, I’m not complaining. Well, I am but I’m not complaining with any real heart. And as excellent as the docs and everything else has been on the previous releases, I am a sucker for commentaries. I cannot even begin to explain the number of multiples copies of various films I have, in large part due to the fucking exclusive commentaries. That’s one good thing about the Alien box set on blu-ray… at least there are no new commentaries. Not that’s I’d be able to play the thing, but if there were I’d have bought that little shite instantly. Fairly sure I had a point in there. You’re welcome try to find it.
I bought the Father Ted Definitive collection specifically for the Linehan/Mathews commentary on series 3 and will probably now buy the even more definitive version for the additional commentaries on that. Never been much of a fan of the cast commentaries (salad mentions I like though!) but the Doug Naylor commentaries are so good. The ones with Ed Bye and Rob Grant are incredible as well.
The ones with Ed Bye and Rob Grant are incredible as well. Six Of The Best is always worth a listen, nice hearing three people talk as friends who are professional rather than stilted co-workers. I’m annoyed that Father Ted keep changing the commentaries. i hope they include that documentary that was shown on TV a while back as well, that would be a worthy addition, it would be the 3rd Father Ted box set I will have bought if it does…
It does get to me that Doug didn’t do at least a commentary on one of the episodes, but did for the deleted scenes (oh well, at least he did that for us). I’m a sucker for commentaries, too. I think the ones with Doug (solo, or with Rob Grant and Ed Bye) are the best. The cast commentaries started out fun to listen to but by the Series VIII ones, they kinda got a little dull. I bought the Father Ted Definitive collection specifically for the Linehan/Mathews commentary on series 3 and will probably now buy the even more definitive version for the additional commentaries on that. I bought the Father Ted Definitive collection last year for the commentaries, too. I still want to get the Spaced USA Boxset for the new commentaries aswell.
