DwarfCast 53 – Timeslides / Backwards Forwards Commentary DwarfCasts Posted by Jonathan Capps on 5th September 2013, 22:13 Subscribe to DwarfCasts: RSS • iTunes It’s DwarfCast time once again, and this time we’re dusting off another commentary recorded on the anniversary weekend, spruced up a bit by a more recent, and possibly ill-advised, commentary on the DVD extra Backwards Forwards. Rejected options for the bonus extra for this ‘cast was Hattie’s DJ Diary, and 20 minutes of bitter, teary complaints about the broken menu on Disc 2. I think we chose wisely. DwarfCast 53 – Timeslides / Backwards Forwards Commentary (106MB)
Somewhat fittingly, I decided to listen to the Backwards Forwards commentary first (so I haven’t listened to the Timeslides one yet). Something that always bothered me about Backwards was that Rimmer and Kryten arrive in Starbug 1 and crash it, leaving Lister and t to arrive safely in Starbug 2, which everyone leaves in, yet Starbug 1 features throughout the rest of the run. However, Starbug 1’s journey makes much moresense in Backwards Forwards: The crew arrive in Starbug 2, then, after their adventures on Backwards Earth, Lister and Cat depart in Starbug 2, leaving Rimmer and Kryten to find Starbug 1, in a lake, to fly home. However, if the events happen forwards, I suppose Starbug 2 could juat have the number painted over and replaced with a 1, and the lack of the second Bug would explain why Cat and Kryten choose to leave in Blue Midget in the next episode. Of course, Starbug ‘1’ crashes *again* in the next episode. Ah well, sets up the ZX81 gag… Oh, don’t mind me, I’m just thinking out loud.
I voted Timeslides my number one episode in the silver survey because it’s out and out funny and so quotable!
It’s totally true I don’t believe either that the cat would wear a big red dwarf badge. I’d never vocalised that opinion but yeah it looks like a big fan club badge from like the very early days doesnt it. However thinking about it while watching deleted scenes just now, we know in better than life that cats dont know how to play golf, even though they claim they do, so I can forgive the costume as the cat on this occasion reading a book in order to set up this table gold game and impress lister for some reason, and trying to look the part by wearing an outfit suitable to the game as he’s seen in the book, and found in the red dwarf’s mall’s golf shop. Where as this episode is now ruined by the brilliant observation about “who is taking photographs of young boys asleep in a school dorm.” which never occured, probably cus i was always thinking about the whole set of shots that dont seem to be inside a photoframe in the big millionaire house scenario.

Possibly explained as being photographs of the exterior of the building. Obviously Rimmer’s sudden appearance in both screws that suggstion up some, but as the pictures of the mansion specifically seem to have been pulled from the Lifestyles of the Disgustingly Rich and Famous vid, it’s entirely likely that blah blah blah fanwank fanwank nnitpick nitpick niggle niggle moan.
Really enjoyed that. And I never made the mental leap that the Timeslides house was in Manchester. Cheap day out with the Mrs! Thanks guys! PS I think Backwards Forward is my favourite DVD extra on any DVD ever
