…since Red Dwarf XI‘s first studio audience recording. Tonight sees its last. G&T will be there, and our set report will be along on Saturday. Literally nobody got in touch with requests for specific non-spoilery information, so speak now or forever stfu.

But what are we expecting from this final episode? Well, Doug says that they’ve “never had anything quite like this before”, and that one of the guest sets “runs the length of the studio”, while #happydp Ed Moore says that it’s “at its insanely-ambitious best”. This is very exciting – it sounds like we’re in for something special, one way or another.

We also know, via a tweet from Morwenna Preston Management that has since been deleted, that an actress called Suanne Braun has been cast. Luckily, we’ve gotten into the habit of screenshot-ing intriguing tweets:

She was in Starhyke. Remember Starhyke?

  • Just had my standby tickets upgraded to guaranteed entry so I’m absolutely buzzing to definitely be going to my first Red Dwarf recording tonight :D :D :D

  • As Kryten nearly once said in Rimmer World. My balls are on Standby! Sir.

    All sounds pretty intriguing stuff.

  • Good man, Ali. I hope to attend a recording myself in Feb when I’m in London.

I always thought Kryten said “worry balls on standby, sir”. as that’s what he calls them at the beginning of the episode, even though they are properly known as Baoding Balls.

  • There is another photo of part of the Starbug set on Twitter from Darren child’s Twitter, he is UKTV’s CEO

    It’s on Gazpacho-soup’s Twitter also

  • Really enjoyed that. Lots of starbug, and a guest set, and a pre recorded set. Done very well.
Felt very VI to me. Cast on from with great guest artists.

  • Really looking forward to this series. I’m obviously going to say that, I know, but the fact that pretty much every episode has had positive IV/V/VI-esque comments about it is really whetting the appetite.

I thought the exact same thing about tonight’s show, a real Starbug adventure episode that made me think of series VI :) Having Starbug back made such a difference!

  • And having Starbug as the main vehicle all episode with no scenes on Red Dwarf should hopefully mean lots of lovely model shots of Starbug too. So glad to see the little spinning Starbug graphic is back on the interior monitors, but not 100% sold on the new interior look. For starters, the lighting seems to be very blue.

Agreed, I really wasn’t sure about the blue lighting in Starbug and it took some getting used to. Though this isn’t necessarily how it will look post-graded? I was just thrilled to see them back in Starbug which was the main thing for me!

  • Oh dear. I almost never like strongly coloured lighting. It tends to look somewhere between ‘cheap’ and ‘WTF – in what way does having green rather than neutral lighting actually make sense in context?’

(For an example, see the Tardis interior for the first two RTD series, before a new lighting guy took over and dumped that crap from S3)
