There’s a bit of context required for this one. As recently documented in our forum, online listings have started to appear for the Series XI DVD/Bluray. While all details are still TBC, it seems that there’s going to be a special edition steelbook in addition to the standard releases, and that they’ll all be released on 14th November. Temporary placeholder artwork can also be glimpsed, such as this for the DVD and this for the Bluray steelbook.

Then, earlier today, Danny John-Jules noticed that some US retailers are using some really dodgy fan mockup as a placeholder. He was not happy about this, given that the Cat is nowhere to be seen. Baby Cow’s Dan Kay moved to reassure Danny that this cover was not genuine, and then the bantz began, with Dan tweeting an amusing alternate mockup. Then just now, Doug took it a step further with this tweet

The actual cover of the actual DVD, there. Well, I assume that Danny won’t be scribbled over in the final version, but you never know. As per the Series X DVD, this cover features the main promo image for the series, and thankfully it’s the revised version of that picture. The sans-serif text on the spine looks bloody lovely, and the back cover contains the traditional episode list, production stills, series synopsis and details of special features…

The top three items on that list are no surprise, but it’s great to have confirmation. The other extras listed are all things that were present throughout the main DVD range, but missing from Series X, so this package makes an instant improvement in that regard. However, while it’s worth remembering that all of this is subject to change until we see an official version on TOS, not all the standard extras are back – no music cues, for one, and most notably there’s still no commentary. That’s a huge shame, but let’s hope we hear more details before too long.

  • As I noted in the forum about two seconds before noticing this news post, that description of Krysis on the back cover, with the detail of leaving the Dwarfers for a younger crew, seems to be new.

The cover as a whole reminds me of the old VHS releases, for whatever reason – maybe it’s just the retro font going down the spine.

  • So what’s to the left of the cut then I wonder, has to fit in a “Chris Bar” and a few mm sized space.

  • Have we found out what Doug’s concerning Twitter bio’s about yet?

Could it be to do with the alarming amount of reviews that think that this current run of Red Dwarf is good because they got some new writers in?

That was my first thought, to be honest, but you’ve got to wonder.

Here’s hoping. It’d be a huge shame if we get no Doug commentary again.

  • >Have we found out what Doug’s concerning Twitter bio’s about yet?

He has finished editing XII and has finished promotion of XI. The Twitter bio is accurate, if slightly oddly worded.

Really is nothing to be concerned about.

  • Assuming that this is pretty ‘final’, the lack of commentaries and music cues is definitely disappointing. These really helped make the classic era DVDs something to truly look forward to.

I don’t think that’s the intention at all. I’m guessing it’s a slight dig at the review that claimed Red Dwarf has benefited from “new writers”.

I think these days a soundtrack album could be a real possibility.

  • This picture is region 1. I’m going to live in denial and assume that the UK dvd will be different and have commentary.
Also not say “behind the scenes” but the name of the 90 minute documentary about red dwarf XI, and also includes a duel between 4 of 27 and hoguee the rougee across time and space.

  • That looks so nice I’m tempted not to reverse the cover. Especially as BTE sticks out like a sore thumb.

Doug’s Twitter bio now states ‘writer/co-writer of all 73 episodes’, just to quell the panic.

  • I actually bought the X DVD instead of the blu-ray just for the reversible cover.

    Priorities.

Ditto. Although I bought the blu-ray as well.
    And the DVD steelbook.

    And a blu-ray steelbook.

Have preordered the XI blu-ray, the DVD’s on my Christmas list.

What did it say before that, out of curiosity?

“Used to be involved in Red Dwarf”

  • Did a bit of dodgy Photoshopping – this is basically what I think the cover will fully look like with Danny reinstated and whatnot.

Now, how to insert an image, here goes…

  • Looking it up on American Amazon, I discovered that they list Series X as Red Dwarf: “X”, which is so fucking stupid I want to cry.

  • I love anyone who responds to something with an appropriate Photoshop. Marry me.

(Incidentally, I filed an “Incorrect Product Name” thing to Amazon, so hopefully they’ll fix that most dumbasstical of errors)

  • Doug will be opening a hotline where you can book him to come around your house and comment as you watch the DVD.

  • I notice there is a pretty conspicuous blank area at the end of the special features list. There’s no way that big obnoxious blank space would be there unless they were planning to fill it with more text.

  • I hope that actually DOES turn out to be the UK blu ray case — it’s smegging fantastic. The covers for BTE and X didn’t really do much for me (the steelbook was half good), but the above feels like ‘real RD’ again, and makes me want to buy it (so, a job well done, then!). Now, fingers crossed that the making of doc is as good as the last one for X.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. I filled in one of those for two albums by The Future Sound of London listed as being by Marte Heggelund, about three years ago. They still haven’t been changed.

  • An edit lock is a long way from a picture lock and a locked dub, and all of that can be changed anyway at the end.

Y’know, my concern is that XII will seem ‘old’ by the time it goes out. I felt a similar disconnect watching Car Share, which was broadcast almost two years after it was shot and not being able to wipe that from the back of my mind. Just think – in a year’s time there could well be QI repeats on Dave filmed at the same time as premiere Red Dwarf.

  • I notice that ‘Give & Take’ uses an ampersand on the cover, Jonathan Capps…

You’re right! I bet that’s an error on the DVD, though, it’s been “and” everywhere else until now.

  • Release dates and whatnot confirmed. The DVD will be released in Region 1 six days before Region 2, because it’s been so much fun having a split audience for the episodes themselves.

For fuck’s sake. Why are they doing this to us, we just want everyone to enjoy it together.

Series XII is going to be aired on different days depending on whether you’ve got a centre parting or a side parting, and if you’re bald you’ll get the Bluray of Series XII the week before episode 1 airs.

  • Am I the only one who’s super freaking stoked by Model Shots?

Absolutely not. I’m right there with you! Be nice if they included the series X model shots as well, seeing as how they were absent on that release. They weren’t all shit after all.

  • US stores will be selling their version of the disc

Thanks, official website, you’ve successfully scared me out of preordering. Plus I can’t help but notice Amazon UK has not only DVD and Blu-Ray but a Steelbook Blu-Ray listed, whereas Amazon US only has a DVD (and with deeply shitty mock-up cover art that probably took all of ten minutes to make). I swear to god if there’s no Region A XI Blu-Ray and I have to buy a Region B one I’m going to kill everyone, because there is no region unlock for my Blu-Ray player that works and I don’t want to have to hook my computer up to the TV (at a subpar 1600 wide resolution to boot) to watch something I own on Blu-Ray.

Red Dwarf XI looks great. Besides the special features, I was looking forward to seeing it in it’s full Blu-Ray-quality glory. It’d be a massive, massive shame if the often quite cheap-looking BtE and X get a Blu-Ray but the gorgeous XI and XII don’t. They can’t even give us the simple little reversible cover art on the DVD, for fucking crying out loud.

Eh, at least US packaging doesn’t have ugly ratings boxes on it.
