Red Dwarf XI: The Game - Officer Rimmer Playthrough featured image

It’s been a little while in the making but GameDigits have now returned with a pretty huge update for the Red Dwarf XI mobile game. Once again, I decided to record my attempt at a blind playthrough and my musings on the update in general.

I have to say, I think I’ve enjoyed the Officer Rimmer update more than any before it and I think that has a lot to do with the gameplay changes. While I struggle using a mouse on the emulator as usual, the on-screen joystick and more responsive movement on the third-person sections have made a huge difference. Not only that but the printer mini-game seen in the Officer Rimmer episode is definitely one of the more fun mini-games so far, definitely benefiting from the incremental balancing and lesson learning from earlier attempt at a similar idea.

You can grab the update from Google Play or Apple App Store right now.

  • “Ah, a button that replays the last thing that was said, very good”
*Ignores instructions on this and spends next 8 minutes wandering around*
    Lovely stuff.

  • I’ve left a comment on the vid over on YouTube, but that game is going to absolutely kill me. I was tightening up just watching that. God knows how I’ll play.

  • Cheers Cappsy, I was on the edge of my seat watching Through pac rimmer, I was shouting “nooo please dont let the Walk through video have an abrupt ending as well!!!!”

Really like the elements that they have turned into games here, The rendering of the nautilus ship is amazing, love the rimmer monster Stuff. Shame there isnt a moment where you have to shoot The barber shop quartet all in a row, they missed a trick there.

But this episode lends itself well to a game.

  • I was so happy when I beat Pac-Rimmer. I would say it’s maybe too difficult, but actually it probably ended up being just about right.

  • Thank you for the playthrough, Mr. Capps. They are always entertaining and a particular highlight for us whenever we release an new episode!

As always, it’s great to see people playing through the game with fresh eyes and seeing how they respond. In your case, not only are you trying to present a video while playing, you’re also using an emulator and speculating on the whole back story to the game’s development too – so quite a challenge in itself!

Since watching through this video we have made the following changes based off what we have seen, as well as various forum posts from G&T:

    – Additional hints on the DNA search for player who first think the mission is linear
    – Made Pac-Rimmer slightly easier
    – Altered the grate puzzle so it can be solved in multiple ways
    – Fixed ‘Twister’ issue on Monster Rimmer
    – Increased timing on the Torpedo run

Therefore a new update will be coming soon…

Si – If it all seems a little too stressful, I can unlock all the games in Ep4 remotely for you. Just let me know your player ID number (found in the profile menu) and I’ll unlock them.

  • Thank you for your Player ID Si, I’ve unlocked those missions now.

For it to register with the game you’ll need to restart it fully (bring up the app list and swipe it off screen) and please make sure you have a valid internet connect when starting up again.

    Enjoy!

In other news, we’re submitting a new update today, so should be on the App Store in 2-3 days and Google Play tomorrow.

    Wow, that’s service!

  • The cutscene “bug” is clearly an ingenious piece of metaphysical commentary on the episode’s infamously abrupt ending.

  • Messed about with it a bit and got my unlocked games, thanks!

Although i have managed to wipe my scores while keeping my progress. But beggars can’t be choosers.
Gone back to play some Twentica games,, which I’ve not played in a while. I can really notice the improvements. Great stuff.

  • Really nice to meet the team behind this at DJ. I finally got to play the game. (As my current old phone is not compatible)
They had it set up on some i pads to play with larger screens also displaying your game play to everyone around who was watching. Really Enjoyed playing Pac Rimmer, and also had a go at a few other bits of Officer Rimmer. I was crap at all of it. ha ha. But my friend Fiona who was clearly even less of a gamer than me, was suffering like in a science exam when they gave her the twentica questions level, and even multiple choice she was bamboozled lol. Fair to say that she is a Chris Barrie Fan girl type etc and far less into the show because of it’s plots or science angles.

Seemed to be that interest in the game is tailing off a bit, follow series XI being of the air now etc etc, I hope DJ boosted interest a bit amongst fans talking about the game, and even more than that i hope the coming of series XII allows them to re-promote and sell the Red Dwarf XI game as complete 6 episode finished package then. Without going into detail of more confidential conversation, rights situations between the multiple factors of a co-authored tv show and attempted previous developments beyond TV thats switched channel partners isn’t an easy minefield to transverse and dictates a series now focus, the success of all the new merchandising would presumably impact future resolution and any further partnerships with future series that are shot or predicted.

  • Thank you for taking the time to chat with us at DJ, Jonsmad. I remember your attempts at the Officer Rimmer games and they weren’t as bad as you probably thought at the time, especially your Pac-Rimmer skills.

The whole event was very interesting actually, we saw how the Red Dwarf audience is massively varied and players have a huge range of skill levels. In fact is one of the main things we wish to address in future updates of the game is the skill levels. We want to cater for non-gamer just as much as seasoned gamers and plans are afoot to make this work.

Despite if the interest for the game tailing off or not, we are still committed to make a great game and will continue to improve and make updates based off feedback from the Red Dwarf community. Events like DJ certainly are fantastic and can really accelerate this process, plus it was great to meet you guys in person too.

Not that one can’t be both, of course. ;)

Shame you weren’t told that in advance, since it’s always been the case! Rumours that we’re a sci-fi geek fandom have been greatly overstated…
