You may remember towards the end of last year a certain packaging based faux pas appeared to confirm the episode titles for a series of Red Dwarf that was almost a year away from broadcast. GNP did state at the time that these weren’t necessarily final, after a nifty wordsearch based treasure hunt on Twitter this morning, we finally have confirmation of the final Red Dwarf XII episode line-up.

Now, there are a few things to note here. Firstly, and most importantly, two episodes have shed their 2016 working titles. Based on the order in which they’re listed, it’s relatively safe to infer that Here No Evil has become Cured and Star Knot is now Skipper. Funnily enough these two changes has left XII with a full roster of single word titles, something that only Series III has ever come close to. Isn’t that just fascinating?  Personally, I would’ve preferred to see either Siliconia or Mechocracy renamed as they’re a little on the similar side and both quite clunky, but by the time we see the episodes that view could easily change. Also Here No Evil was by far my favourite title from last year’s leak, so it’s sad to see that go in favour of a relatively uninspired title.

It’s always weird when we learn of new episode titles before we’ve managed to see the episodes themselves and form the deep seated associations with these names that will inevitably come. They will always seem nebulous and relatively uninspiring until we know the proper context. The good news is, we really don’t have long to wait!

  • Mis, Bee, Mis – the story of a bee that has to have the plot of Victor Hugo’s greatest work explained to it

  • As I’m guessing hear no evil is the one i saw recorded i am happy to hear Cappsy
Slagging of cured as a ham of a title! Here no evil is better. I wasnt keen on star knot
So smoke me a “skipper” i will be back for red dwarf XII.

  • So are we allowed to guess ?

    Cat pic – cured
    Rimmer pic – timewave
    Lister pic – mcorp
    Kryten pics – mechthingycracy

  • I suppose Doug must have decided an episode like Star Knot deserved a nickname, thought “Skipper” sat rather well, and it stuck.

  • The titles are very nice. :D Maybe they couldn’t use ‘Here No Evil’ for some reason…? or simply didn’t want the word ‘evil’ in a title?

Colour me surprised they’re not opening the series with Mechocracy. Not that I know anything about it other than the probability it’s the all-Mechanoids episode, but it seems like it would be one to grab people’s attention. If Siliconia is the one recorded first; going off the set reports, that was meant to be a fair-belter of an episode, so I’m looking forward to that one. :D Also Skipper, if it was the final one recorded, that one seemed to provoke more of a reaction from the studio recordings than any other out of the two series’, so bring it the heck on! :D

  • I have opinions, but then I used to HATE Lemons as a title, and now I love it, so my opinions are irrelevant.

(Though I still haven’t got over Fathers and Suns being a crap title. YOU HEARD.)

  • We know from information released, intentionally or otherwise, and/or reported by G&T that:
Recording 1 is Everyone’s Kryten, and is either “Siliconia” or “Mechocracy”
    Recording 3 is Drowned Cat
Recording 4 is the one with *o**** L*****
Recording 5 is unquestionably “M-Corp”, with Old Lister
Recording 6 is Retro Rimmer, and almost certainly “Skipper” (formerly “Star Knot”)

We still don’t have anything solid on recording 2, I don’t think.

  • Do we definitely know that Retro Rimmer and *o**** L***** aren’t both the same episode? The Clapperboard Incident and the metadata on the Rimmer photo suggest they are.

  • The metadata on Retro Rimmer tells us it was the sixth and last recording, doesn’t it? If you look at the set reports it’s pretty clear which one *o**** L***** was in, and it wasn’t that one.

(It is possible, of course, he was in both, although that still gives us two distinct episodes.)

  • I was going to post a joke there with a different name that “*o**** L*****” could be but now I’m second guessing myself in case I’VE made a mistake, and I accidentally post a spoiler I’m not actually aware of. XII is making my head melt already.

  • The Clapperboard Incident completely passed me by as I think I was asleep when it happened.

I was going to change the two uncensored letters in “*o**** L*****” every time I posted it, but thought that might defeat the vague attempt at secrecy…

  • On another note…

It seems to fit the general image we’re building up of Series XII that these are some of the strangest, unknowable titles yet, although that might be because we have yet to read their synopsises (or, indeed, any official description of XII).

“Cured” puts one in mind of many of the show’s one-word titles in the past, but if you just read the title of “Bodyswap”, “Justice” or “Blue”, that could tell you something about the episode. This is altogether more oblique, and knowing that the working title was “Here No Evil” doesn’t help matters. This is a title that could be about a story which is about many different things, which hasn’t been the case for a long time on Dwarf, if ever.

“Siliconia” and “Mechocracy”: I was in the audience for The One Where Everyone’s Kryten, and the more I think about it the more I think it could describe either of them, yet Stephen above saw another recording and is sure that one’s “Mechocracy” (which I was previously pretty sure was TOWEK).

I am still a *bit* disappointed that “Star Knot” has been changed to “Skipper”. However, if I am right about what’s going on in that episode, then I suspect that the new title has a quite brilliant double meaning.

  • When people hear Skipper they instantly think of Ace Rimmer and i actually hope Ace doesn’t come back.

Feels like something that should be left alone now (including Duane Dibbley)

It never gets better when you bring them back, it usually only gets more tired.

  • I am still a *bit* disappointed that “Star Knot” has been changed to “Skipper”. However, if I am right about what’s going on in that episode, then I suspect that the new title has a quite brilliant double meaning.

When you rewatch the series, it’ll be the episode that you leave out?

  • My thoughts on the matter are that you can absolutely address the Ace mythos again in an interesting way without even needing Ace himself to make an appearance. Though IF they wanted to address Rimmer’s time as Ace, that I would not be opposed to.

That said, I’m thinking the Ace connection could be a deliberate red herring.

  • My thinking is that there is some kind of alternative reality story in ‘Skipper’ (given it seems the Retro Rimmer-as-Officer pic hails from that ep), and hence the title refers both to skipping between different realities and Rimmer’s new role in the parallel dimension.

  • The cynic in me thinks some of these were renamed because of the leak. I don’t think of any of the newer title are particularly striking and M-Corp, which means precisely nothing to a new viewer, was crying out for a new name.

  • This time last year I correctly guessed the recording orders. This year I ain’t got a scooby. I remember fears that a lot more spoilers would be out by now so back slaps all round (with a slight eye roll in the direction of Ed Moore).

In fairness, the Series XI titles were accompanied with a synopsis, which these aren’t.

  • M-Corp, which means precisely nothing to a new viewer, was crying out for a new name.

On the other hand, I question whether anyone outside the fandom would pay any mind to the episode titles.

Also, assuming Timewave is in fact the second recorded, I noticed this in the set report:

I’m going to use the main guest set as an example this week as it was quite obvious to me that there was a marked difference to the live set and what was piped through to us. The colours were noticeably military greyer in real life (as it were) than on the screens.

Make of that what you will. Vague set report hints are starting to make sense to me, so I’m going to stop looking at them.

Timewave is an excellent title. Sounds like something from the III/IV era.

  • Well we have seen Lister aged and that’s M-Corp because he had the M-Corp badge on him. Siliconia I’m guessing silicone heaven all the Kryten robots. The old Rimmer uniform I believe will be the episode Skipper the Final episode scheduled as Hollys return. I believe in that episode he will be back to the old hologram; back to the old uniform; back to the old Red Dwarf and that’s where we will find the old Holly on the original series 1 ship

  • > and hence the title refers both to skipping between different realities and Rimmer’s new role in the parallel dimension.

Sounds like ‘stepping’ from The Long Earth (Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter novel, and its sequels). It would be fairly awesome if Doug had been influenced by it.

‘Cured’ suggests someone will be cured of something. It’s not set in Middle America by any chance….? :o

Nobody gets cured in Middle America. They’re too busy protesting vaccines.

    Cause TB is such fun……xD

It’s interesting that you pull out “Blue” as a title that tells you something about the episode, as I would suggest that it’s just as oblique as “Cured” without any further context. With the knowledge that the episode follows Rimmer ‘becoming’ Ace and leaving the crew, it may have been possible to deduce that it’s “blue” as in sad, but without that it’s certainly not as obvious as “Bodyswap” or “Justice”.

So based on suggestions about recording order, the episode I saw recorded was “Cured”/”Here No Evil”, which fits with my hazy 18-month old recollection of the episode, although in my mind at least one other title could fit. I am so excited to actually see it as a final product, and I cannot wait to see/read people’s reactions to it – it was the one described as “divisive” by Andrew Ellard so it will be interesting to see if that comes to pass. I was on the ‘loved it’ side of the divide, although anything can happen in the edit I guess – and given that some of the footage (or, at least, some of the dialogue) has already been used in Series XI, I am intrigued to see whether we end up with “surprise” footage entered into this episode, or whether it has just been removed and the rest of the recording fills up the entire episode.

  • > and given that some of the footage (or, at least, some of the dialogue) has already been used in Series XI

    Which scene was it again?

  • According to the Red Dwarf game. The SS Samsara is a product of M Corp. i don’t know if that’s a Doug Edit because I’m sure it sounds like Mega Core

  • > and given that some of the footage (or, at least, some of the dialogue) has already been used in Series XI

    Which scene was it again?

Opening scene of Officer Rimmer for one. “Gerald the Giraffe” was even the tiny spoiler for the 12 recording it came from.

  • I can exclusively reveal that series XIII titles are
Accidentally included hidden within today’s word search too,
    They are as follows

BEEM – in which crew teleport some toothpaste.

COP OS – in which the crew encounter the software police

PERM AAG – in which rimmers wig takes over the ship

TONI – a robotic version of mr hawks arrives to give rimmer a haircut (part 2)

A BOK JOLC – the cat writes his full guide to scrabble

LAZ SET – kryten knocks his settings and becomes a slob like lister.

  • > Opening scene of Officer Rimmer for one. “Gerald the Giraffe” was even the tiny spoiler for the 12 recording it came from.

Though it must have been shot during that 12 recording, specifically to be slotted in to Officer Rimmer, cause the scene ends with Kryten mentioning about the Nautilus being in trouble. Hmmmm

  • I’ve been wondering about the Officer Rimmer scene for ages. I guess the Cat’s costume will decide it. I can’t for the life of me remember what he was wearing but I also don’t remember noticing a costume change on the night. Odd what you get excited about really isn’t it?

  • >Though it must have been shot during that 12 recording, specifically to be slotted in to Officer Rimmer, cause the scene ends with Kryten mentioning about the Nautilus being in trouble. Hmmmm

There was some discussion from people with far better attention to detail than me about where you could see the join in the edit between the XII filmed stuff and the rest of OR. If it were filmed specifically to go into an episode of XI, it would have been much easier to just announce that on the night and also include the Nautilus dialogue, so that makes me feel that it was not filmed specifically for that. Who knows, though.

From what I recall, there was no Cat costume change on the night, so it may be the costume will be repeated for “Cured”.

  • Wait.

Are we actually certain that Everybody’s Kryten and MILF aren’t entirely different episodes? That could explain the two mechy titles.

This is going to turn out to be oddly prescient when Everybody’s Kryten airs, presuming a certain line hasn’t been cut.

  • I’m guessing that we will get the synopsis today as it has appeared on another site. Won’t link to it directly if it’s going to appear anyway but it’s only a google search away (clue – Britbox).

  • OK, aside from what “Cured” is about that really didn’t tell me a lot we hadn’t already guessed or heard from Doug. Not too spoilery.

I’m now convinced “Cured” and “Skipper” are the better titles.

  • You’re going to have to spell it out for me or I’m gonna have to wait until 11:30. I’m @phillimess on twitter if you don’t wanna spell it out here

  • Assuming today’s TOS update is the synopsis. I will literally spunk everywhere if the trailer is released today

  • Cured and Skipper both sound like classic concepts anyway. M-Corp maybe something a bit different.

It’s interesting that they seem to be going for a finale episode that deals with those kinds of issues again, too.

  • It’s interesting that they seem to be going for a finale episode that deals with those kinds of issues again, too.

If we are ignoring Kochanski, at this point that Rimmer’s character is more important than Lister to the greater narrative. I’m happy to see big finale episodes deal primarily with him, hopefully in a way that takes into account the developments from The Beginning and what ways it has and hasn’t affected him.

If there were to be a true big goodbye finale for Red Dwarf, I’d want the series to end with Rimmer finally finding peace with himself – like The Beginning but in a more permanent way. Rimmer coming to terms with his place in the universe is a much more meaningful and emotional way to go out than Lister gets the girl/back to Earth.

Plus, I’m a deeply screwed up individual with low self-esteem who longs for something more. I’ve _always_ identified with Rimmer, even as a kid. If you go back to the Sonic fanfiction I was writing in middle school you can spot a very distinct Rimmer-influence on how I wrote Tails.

  • Looking at the set report for recording 3 – which must surely be “Cured” given what we now know about its plot – it looks like they’ve finally gotten around to booking Adolf Hitler again.

  • The new longer synopsis indicates that Siliconia is Everybody’s Kryten, and more about what Mechocracy and M-Corp are. Timewave is the puzzler as it doesn’t seem to correlate to ‘criticism is illegal’ or ‘The Cat needs glasses’.

  • Love the publicity shot.

Hate the fact that we’ve got to wait until October to see a series that was recorded in 2016. What the hell have Dave got to show in September that’s worthy of bumping the Dwarf back?!

Am I missing something here? The synopsis I can see only mentions Cured, M-Corp and Skipper.

  • October! Surprised. Another six weeks to go then. Argh.

Also the brief synopsis was more than I wanted to know. I’m definitely out now. See you in 12 weeks chaps!

(Or over in a ‘moaning about VII & VIII’ thread maybe :D )

  • Ah, thanks.

Cured – “space station where the crew have developed a cure for evil”
Siliconia – “the rest of the crew discover just how it feels to be Kryten when they’re arrested by the Mechanoid Intergalactic Liberation Front”
Timewave – “The Cat faces an identity crisis like never before when he discovers he needs glasses”
Mechocracy – “Lister discovers a simple update of the ship’s latest software could be a matter of life or death” AND “When all the machines on Red Dwarf go on strike Rimmer and Kryten hold a Presidential election”
M-Corp – “The Dwarfers come across a ship where criticism is illegal” (this would also be the “making products invisible” one from the other synopsis)
Skipper – “Rimmer decides to leave Red Dwarf in search of a parallel universe where he isn’t such a massive loser”

  • None of those sound all that exciting.

The cat needs glasses? comedy gold right there.

Another round of dispensing machines with funny accents while Rimmer acts all authoritative over them.

I love how you’re getting annoyed at your own stupid plot idea. Obviously none of these are going play out in anything approaching the simplistic way you’re predicting. Cat needs glasses sounds like the kind of thing that leads into larger story about Cat dealing with his aging body and not being as spry and unwrinkled as he used to be. That could make for some interesting introspection.

Y’know, the kind of thing Red Dwarf does.

If you’re going to make overly cynical predictions, at least try to be more creative than just whining about the vending machine from Fathers and Suns. Especially considering how long ago that was and how Series 11 specifically avoided doing anything like it with the machines that featured throughout.

You have very little basis for complaining about these plots based on what tiny amounts of information we have, but apparently that didn’t stop you.

  • “October”

Best guess sirs is Thursday October 12th with UKTV Play premiere on the 5th.

    *smug fucker dance*
