Well then, today’s TOS update has certainly given us something to talk about, despite having already had a teaser trailer and title reveal this week. It’s hard for us to say too much, having attended the recording, but for those of you who didn’t, get a load of this:

As TOS points out, there’s still a lot of things to speculate about with this special. Fill your boots.

  • I know we moaned for ages that Rimmer could do with a new uniform, but Jesus Christ…

I’m assuming this is something he asks Holly to change him into for some reason? Perhaps he wants to look tough or impressive when meeting the cat race, just like he did when meeting the ladies in “Kryten”?

  • I…what??

Ok, like I don’t hate this I’m just fucking confused. I guess with a 90 minute episode we’re gonna see a lot of different elements packed in. I’m curious to see how…whatever the hell this is ties in with what we know so far.

  • To be fair, basically all we have so far is Cat race, some explosions, and Rimmer in some armour – it’s not THAT much to pack into 90 minutes, is it?

Looks like Rimmer is getting an upgrade – from hard light to well ‘ard light

  • He’s got mech pecs. But his gurning is still the most ridiculous thing in this picture.

  • >we’re gonna see a lot of different elements packed in

Thats an average dave era Red Dwarf episode really.

  • this is cool as hell, right? i love it. more excited for this episode than i been since before X

  • >we’re gonna see a lot of different elements packed in

Yeah. If only they had more than an episode’s runtime to properly explore these big ideas. Oh well.

  • Yeah. If only they had more than an episode’s runtime to properly explore these big ideas. Oh well.

Or just minimize it to maybe one big idea and maybe one smaller idea. its happened in the past. it works. focus on one idea, rather than juggle several :P

  • I’m surprised they revealed this before broadcast! Though I guess if you have Rimmer looking like a superhero then you are going to use that in promotion.

  • First of all, that corridor looks great. As for the costume… err. think I’ll have to find out what it’s supposed to be before deciding whether it’s any good or not.

  • Give him a helmet, some gloves and a weapon, and he’ll be all ready to inspire a fellow crewmember to heroism by pretending to have escaped from the AR machine.

  • Impossible to judge out of context really but yeah, my feeling is it looks a bit too bizarre to be properly badass, and yet ever so slightly too good to be something comical the Dwarfers have cobbled together themselves. I like it though, and the set looks gorgeous.

  • Every time I look at this image, I just see my impact shorts spray painted silvery green.

  • The more I look at Rimmer’s codpiece the more it looks like the tongue from the Rolling Stones logo.

  • Perhaps its from a dream sequence and it is how Rimmer sees himself or something? If this is going out over Easter then we only have a month approx. to wait and find out

  • Hmm so that outfit is….interesting, I’ve got 5 possible options…
1 – This could be our old Rimmer (Series 7) and his returned and this is his Ace Rimmer guise
2 – The crew relocate off Red Dwarf after it’s damaged (?) and the ship they go to remodels Rimmer and gives him an update?
3 – Rimmer dons this super hard light out fit to defend the ship but dies (?) and is resurrected (yet again) but this time (for now at least) as a soft light hologram
4 – The crew of the Enlightenment return to help and Rimmer rejoins their ranks (albeit breifly) all that he can don their version of a Military Uniform and for fill another life goal
5 – Holly (spoiler?) updates Rimmer now his back (briefly ~ can see Holly not being a permanent return) makes Rimmer stronger for his now full time hard light life and gives him what he (Holly) thinks would be stylish clothes

  • Alright, for my serious, sober thoughts (no, that wasn’t a joke yesterday) this could either be really, really funny or really, really shit. Obviously.

Talk about tonal whiplash in marketing, first give us a teaser jampacked with melodramatic monologues then give us a publicity photo of one of the main characters looking like he’s Rainn Wilson in Super only even worse looking.

My theory is this might relate to Rimmer’s, “You don’t need me, I’m not sure you ever did,” and lead into something similar to his heel-turn at the end of Last Human, where Rimmer has to have a “be a hero” moment and in an attempt to look more “heroic” dons a superhero outfit he think makes him cooler but really makes him look like a twat.

On its own though, I do think its funny but whether it holds the same in the movie remains to be seen.

  • > My theory is this might relate to Rimmer’s, “You don’t need me, I’m not sure you ever did,” and lead into something … where Rimmer has to have a “be a hero” moment

Yes I thought that. Also I dunno if it’s the way he says it or what but Lister’s “we need to stick together” makes me think of the “keep our heads” gag from Out of Time, as in “stick together” is meant literally.

  • Spaghettification?

I was close to mentioning how that could be the scene reminiscent of IWCD, but realized pretty swiftly that’s from BTL, so no dice

  • > the scene reminiscent of IWCD

I didn’t know about that. There’s no mention of it in the G&T set reports. It’s got me wondering whether we might get a flashback to cat history by way of a recap for more casual viewers, maybe a cold open.

  • > the scene reminiscent of IWCD

I believe it was in the Gazpacho Soup set report where I read that. That was for the second recording, so I think it’ll happen in the latter 45 minutes of the movie.

  • As long as we’re contriving imagined complaints, I bet it’s going to feel like the worst of VIII since it looks a bit silly.

  • The Gaspacho Soup set report said there was something similar to IWCD, in the same sort of way M-corp does with the novels. which tells me its probably something Cat related in IWCD. thats the novel that did go into the whole Cats backstory.

  • You mean the civilization of cardboard boxes? Maybe that’d be conveyed in a flashback, to likely questionable results.

  • It would be a funny contrast, though, to have the cardboard boxes sequence contrasted with the feline empire now flying giant spaceships. I’m curious as to how they constructed those, but I best not speculate in fear of others having already done that and them launching a second inquisition for my head as revenge.

  • My theory on the spaceships being so sci-fi is they were the most impressive/budget friendly ones available on Turbosquid or something.

The knock off Morgan Freeman space station was just something a random guy made a few years before that episode to practice Blender, the huge mothership from Siliconia also appears in other stuff suggesting it’s off a model purchasing service, it would make sense that the cat ships would be from a similar source.

Spend the budget on other stuff like sets and guests I guess, they look good, just not catty in the way of the few existing cat ship drawings.

  • I think this is the one from Siliconia

    >$99

We really are a Mickey Mouse operation, aren’t we?

I will say, though, the main spaceship (I can only assume) firing on the halfed-Starbug looked really cool against the desert and sky. In space though, they seemed a bit bland.

Btw, I’m glad we actually get a planetoid with a proper sky for once, it seems every planet the crew arrive on that isn’t an alternate Earth just has a giant backdrop of space against it.

  • OK, I’ve worked it out. That’s not Rimmer in the photo, that’s Rimmer’s secret evil twin brother, Lordan Rimmer. I expect that he’ll be the true villain of The Promised Land, and our heroes will have to team up with the Cats to defeat him.

How do I know that’s not our Rimmer? Easy – those aren’t the clothes he usually wears.

  • I’ve been looking at this picture for what seems like two ice ages, and I think I hate it.

Still looking forward to the special, though.

  • It looks more appealing to me due to it blending in nicely with the corridor itself, I’m sure if you take it out of there it’ll probably go down in my overall approval of it.

  • Maybe that isn’t our Rimmer, it’s one of the many left on Rimmerworld who have broken free of the planet and is sort of an anti-Ace Rimmer, fucking things up everywhere he goes and being an all round git?

  • an anti-Ace Rimmer, fucking things up everywhere he goes and being an all round git?

    We already _have_ that Rimmer.

  • Yeah, a git/fuck-up is not enough to be the anti-Ace. He would need to be pure evil, an unambiguous monster. He would need to be friends with the Hitlers.

I’m not sure if The Promised Land is the place to do it, but it does have the potential to be a good episode. Though we’ve seen enough evil Rimmers over the years that they’d need to make sure he was different enough to keep it fresh.

Ace is the one who get held back a year, our Rimmer is the one who didn’t get held back, so anti-Ace (hopefully with a better nickname) is the one who skipped a year? A “what if Rimmer was genuinely brilliant, achieved all of his military goals, and became a ruthless conquerer” scenario.
