When TOS updates on any day other than Friday, it’s either extremely good news or extremely bad news. Thankfully, today was the former, with the announcement that the triple act of Rob Grant, Paul Jackson and Ed Bye are broadcasting a live commentary on Future Echoes followed by a Q&A, this Sunday 29th March at 2pm BST. It will take place via Zoom, but places on the call are extremely limited, so fill in the form on the TOS page right this second if you don’t want to miss out.

Anyone who saw the trio give The End this treatment at the last Dimension Jump will be very excited to see them reprise the act, and hope that at least another 34 episodes will follow if this is a success. At a time when content creators from across the world of entertainment are pulling out the stops with innovative ways to provide a glimmer of distraction from the shitty situation we find ourselves in, this is a much welcome venture right now.

  • Awesome, though it does seem like a bit of a waste that only 90 people get to experience it.

  • What a day. Walked out of work. Where they refuse to close, despite our current non essential working, And one of the staff there are confirmed as being a covid 19 case today. Then Got my email. I’m in the quarantine for this commentary this Sunday. What a much needed boost in these difficult times, for everyone.

  • I see Zoom is limited to 40 minutes. So a 10 minute QnA or two calls perhaps. Anyone have a relevant question, they’de like me to ask on this?

I think it’s more the limitations of the software, but I think they’re trialling this as a pilot so who knows what they might be able to do going forward.

  • Yeah, got my email this afternoon, too. No idea how Zoom works, mind, Seems a bit complicated to my uneducated eye.

  • Yes, me and Quinn tested Zoom for a little and it seems relatively straightforward. Very fortunate to have been selected.

  • I was using it last night with some mates, one of which has a pro account. If the pro account initiates the call it can be as long as you want. We were on for hours. So I don’t think time is a probably, will probably be longer than 40mins.

To everyone that hasn’t used it before. Sign up, run a test meeting which you’ll be prompted to do and it’ll prompt you to download the app. Form there there isn’t much you need to do. I assume we’ll be emailed a link to a meeting shorty before the start time on Sunday. Click that, it’ll open in zoom and from there it’s just a case of enjoying the fun.

  • I wasn’t really alluding to the platform limitations – though surely more people would be able to watch live if they did it on Twitch or something – but to the idea of doing a live broadcast/video conference commentary, but not also recording and publishing it.

Then again, maybe I’m jumping the gun and they actually are planning to record and release it. That would be cool.

  • “We’re hoping to be able to upload the recorded stream afterwards, so that everyone will get a chance to view it and if all goes well then we’ll look at doing another episode, so hopefully there will be other opportunities for fans to get involved.”

  • It’s great to watch them watch dwarf.

Ruby wax videobombed Ed. And I think Paul Jackson is watching remastered by
    mistake here. Lol.

  • Well that was a jolly lot of fun. Glad they want to try and make it a regularly thing and go through as many of the episodes as possible. It’s great watching them talk about the show and there were plenty of discussion and anecdotes (especially on the technical aspects from Ed) that I’ve not heard before.

  • Rob answered my question. If bodysnatcher had been shot and not Me2. He still thinks Future Echoes would have been second. And he would have placed confidence and paranoia last.

  • there were plenty of discussion and anecdotes (especially on the technical aspects from Ed) that I’ve not heard before

Yeah, the stuff about filming the ‘old Lister’ scene was interesting. I’d never even considered that Rimmer’s various parts of the scene would have to have been shot at completely different times, but it’s obvious when you think about it. It just shows how seamlessly they pulled it off.

    Can only hope!

  • It was definitely being recorded, and the last few minutes involved a discussion of which episode should be covered next week, so it sounds promising on both counts.

  • Anyway, I can’t say enough how much this brightened up my day today. Thanks to Rob and Ed and Paul for doing it and giving up their time for nothing. Hopefully there are indeed more to come.

  • Shame Doug isn’t involved. he seems to be the missing link here. not sure why he has alienated himself.

  • Rob and Doug probably just want to keep their space. Considering how much of Doug’s perspective is on the DVDs hearing more from Rob is valuable.

  • I’d imagine Doug would rather attention is on new Red Dwarf rather than old Red Dwarf.

And for that reason, I think they may want to skip a week if this is intended to be regular fixture of lockdown.

  • I don’t know, I think I could manage watching the new episode of Red Dwarf on a Thursday night in between two old episodes on the Sundays.

These are for fans only, it’s not like they’re distracting mainstream attention away from the special.

  • If they carry on doing one a week, what episode would they be doing a couple of days after The Promised Land airs?
Oh, Waiting For God. That’s handy.

  • Due to the time difference from Australia this was late Sunday night and I fell asleep waiting for it to start. :( Feel terrible for getting a spot that could have gone to someone else and hoping the recording goes up!
