I’m terrible at my job and I know it, yet I still have the dam thing…hopefully the phone call I missed today, which I’ll be ringing back tomorrow, is another job. *Fingers crossed* Anyone else get the feeling they were hired for a different reason? If the guy keeps staring at you you’re well within your rights to say something to him or someone else. Maybe have a word with his girlfriend? I can’t say I’ve never been guilty of doing the same thing at work tbh. Men, we’re just complete twats in that regard, aren’t we? I’d hate to think I was pissing someone off with my wandering eye though. November 7, 2007 at 9:17 am #125524 DaveParticipant I started temping at a lawfirm and the word had obviously gotten out that there was new blood in the office because one of the solicitors bounded over, searched around and was crestfallen to discover I was one of those males. As soon as he left, one of the girls told me he came over daily, sought her out and had a conversation with her that never strayed above the neck. November 7, 2007 at 10:24 am #125528 Tanya JonesParticipant Look on the bright side, Penny; at least your ability to do the job doesn’t matter. All you need to do is turn up in low-cut tops. Easy money! November 7, 2007 at 11:55 am #125532 Joey TORDFCParticipant A. Yes – it’s a daily struggle *sigh* November 7, 2007 at 11:58 am #125530 PhilParticipant A. Yes – it’s a daily struggle. *sigh* November 7, 2007 at 12:14 pm #125533 Joey TORDFCParticipant I just LOLd. November 7, 2007 at 12:55 pm #125534 Smeg4BrainsParticipant Booooooooooooooooooobs November 7, 2007 at 1:31 pm #125536 Mr FlibbleParticipant Apparently I was picked because the interviewer liked my name, and spent the next few hours saying it out loud. November 7, 2007 at 2:20 pm #125537 AndrewParticipant I was hired for my lustrous youth and magnificent abs. That and my skills at bullshitting. Be glad to be ogled while it lasts. For me it lasted for three hours in 1999. November 7, 2007 at 2:35 pm #125538 BazParticipant > For me it lasted for three hours in 1999. That wasn’t on September 13th was it? November 7, 2007 at 2:57 pm #125539 AndrewParticipant > That wasn?t on September 13th was it? I had to Google to understand that one… November 7, 2007 at 3:12 pm #125540 Seb PatrickKeymaster … and now I’ve got the theme tune stuck in my head. Class. November 7, 2007 at 8:06 pm #125541 Smeg4BrainsParticipant > That wasn?t on September 13th was it? I’m sure I’m not the only person but I don’t get it. November 7, 2007 at 8:34 pm #125542 Ian SymesKeymaster I haven’t a clue, but the wife says it’s something to do with Friends. November 8, 2007 at 12:23 am #125543 mickParticipant If you have a meaty rack, and present it in a tight or low cut top in a mixed workplace it’s going to get stared at, live with it or get yourself a cardigan. November 8, 2007 at 1:31 am #125549 pennyParticipant > Be glad to be ogled while it lasts. I’m fine with being ogled at, but it would be nice if it was some I liked ogling me. *Sigh* >For me it lasted for three hours in 1999. You sure it was 1999 that was the last time? >> That wasn?t on September 13th was it? >I?m sure I?m not the only person but I don?t get it. Haven’t a clue…all I found for that day was a bomb exploding in Russia. >get stared at, live with it or get yourself a cardigan. I found my other type of bra, so not so high any more. November 8, 2007 at 1:47 am #125552 Smeg4BrainsParticipant Maybe I could be of more help if you sent a picture…..no? It was worth a try. November 8, 2007 at 7:07 am #125553 Seb PatrickKeymaster >I haven?t a clue, but the wife says it?s something to do with Friends. What happened in Friends on that date? Anyway, everyone knows that was the date the moon was wrenched from its orbit and sent hurtling out into space… November 8, 2007 at 8:19 am #125554 Tanya JonesParticipant >I found my other type of bra, so not so high any more. The balconette instead of the peephole? Wise choice. November 8, 2007 at 10:45 am #125556 BazParticipant For those who still hadn’t worked it out, September 13th 1999 is the date in “Space 1999” that the nuclear waste dump on the moon explodes and the moon is blown out of orbit and sent careening through space. “Blown Out Of Orbit” Sounds like the title of a cheap sci-fi porn movie… November 8, 2007 at 11:52 am #125557 PhilParticipant >Maybe I could be of more help if you sent a picture?..no? It was worth a try. We are hereby officially invoking Rule #1. November 8, 2007 at 12:55 pm #125560 DaveParticipant >We are hereby officially invoking Rule #1 Black card? November 9, 2007 at 2:53 am #125570 pennyParticipant >The balconette instead of the peephole? Wise choice. Uh!? You lost me…I wear bras I don’t know the names of them…hell, I hardly remember anyone’s name at work…or the wines Why don’t we just have three basic wines Red, Rose and White so then it don’t that an age to attempt to pronounce the names of them or to find them on the till or at the bar. I’m so tired now. November 9, 2007 at 7:13 am #125575 Pete Part ThreeParticipant It’s always wine, isn’t it? November 9, 2007 at 10:52 am #125587 BazParticipant > We are hereby officially invoking Rule #1 > Black card? I thought it was “No Poofters”. November 9, 2007 at 11:03 am #125588 Seb PatrickKeymaster >The balconette instead of the peephole? Wise choice. Uh!? You lost me?I wear bras I don?t know the names of them? I think she was lampooning you. It was a simple lampoon. Why don?t we just have three basic wines Red, Rose and White You do know that different wines, even of the same colour, taste completely different, right? November 9, 2007 at 11:44 am #125589 Joey TORDFCParticipant >> You do know that different wines, even of the same colour, taste completely different, right? Not to my uncultured tongue, it’s all pretty nasty stuff. Who thought of drinking fermented grape juice??! November 9, 2007 at 11:47 am #125590 PhilParticipant I thought the three basic wines were “Decent,” “Fucking Horrible,” and “Why did I pay $50 for this?” November 9, 2007 at 1:26 pm #125593 pennyParticipant >You do know that different wines, even of the same colour, taste completely different, right? Yer, but basic right…I was just having a wine about the fact I haven’t a clue about wine and I keep on having problems ensuring costumers getting the right ones and also I can’t pronounce any of the ones we have and therefore I am laughed at by the costumers. I’m going to pose another question…does anyone else hate their jobs? November 9, 2007 at 1:34 pm #125594 BazParticipant Nope, my job is great. I’m doing what I wanted to do (and have been doing) since leaving university. I’ve currently got a chance to enhance my career, pick up a specialism no-one else is doing, got a boss who is a bigger geek than me, work right in the middle of London, get to see my girlfriend a lot (just had lunch with her, having dinner with her this evening), living nearer some good friends than I was before, working 5 mins walk from Forbidden Planet/Gosh Comics/British Museum. ‘S great. Also I have a job that is towards the top end of weird in my particular field. Which is a plus. November 9, 2007 at 4:28 pm #125599 Danny StephensonKeymaster One of my jobs is shit, the other is a foot in the door to what I REALLY want to do, so it’s not a complete loss… November 9, 2007 at 4:34 pm #125600 DaveParticipant >Also I have a job that is towards the top end of weird in my particular field. Crikey. Do you mind if I ask what you do? November 9, 2007 at 4:38 pm #125601 BazParticipant Assistant Curator at the Freemasonry Museum in Covent Garden. Now that I’ve told you this I will have to kill you of course. November 9, 2007 at 4:47 pm #125602 DaveParticipant I think you should insist that the phrase “top end of weird” is incorporated into your job title November 9, 2007 at 5:03 pm #125603 BazParticipant The subject matter is strange enough (though it’s a fascinating and under-reported piece of social history) but getting emails telling you not to worry about the sound of gunfire in the office corridor (they were filming Spooks, we’re their HQ building) or having the Grand Temple dressed up as Finland (Spamalot launch party) can be bizarre too. The Temple was also seen in HHGTTG, moonlighting as the church of the Great Green Arkleseizure, we’re one of the top 10 film locations in London. You’re just a twat, aren’t you… I’m actually going to Covent Garden this weekend – Lord of the Rings musical at Drury Lane and then basically just tossing around Covent Garden. I bet the Freemasonry museum is only open during the week though. Ohhhhh, secretive bunch… November 9, 2007 at 5:11 pm #125605 BazParticipant > I bet the Freemasonry museum is only open during the week though. Ohhhhh, secretive bunch? How did you guess. 10 to 5, Mondays to Fridays. Free admission, and you get the tours (at 11, 12, 2, 3 and 4) unless the Grand Temple is in use, which isn’t often (the stars have to be right, or something). November 9, 2007 at 5:13 pm #125606 BazParticipant Repeat post, ignore. Fnord. And the LOTR musical was utter smeg in my opinion, Lackluster performances, unengaging musical numbers and a story abbreviated to the point of farce. Like to hear your opinion though. November 9, 2007 at 5:30 pm #125607 TheLeenParticipant Oh man, and I wanted to go and see it some time next year. Please, someone tell me that it’s great. November 9, 2007 at 5:53 pm #125608 Michael WarrenParticipant I can only agree with Baz on the final point – I thought the performances were good, and some of the numbers were excellent (for an example – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k796JtCVa7k). But the story itself is very heavily compromised by the running time (and the necessity of getting people out before the Tube shuts down…) November 9, 2007 at 11:54 pm #125611 Smeg4BrainsParticipant I hate my job with a passion. In fact I got so pissed off yestersay that I walked out in the middle of a shift…I then turned around and went back because I need the money and can’t afford to loose my job. November 10, 2007 at 2:07 am #125614 pennyParticipant >Oh man, and I wanted to go and see it some time next year. Please, someone tell me that it?s great. Urm…it’s great. *Avoids telling I haven’t watched it* …ooops! November 10, 2007 at 2:18 am #125615 pennyParticipant Talked to a great careers couch on the phone today which was really useful. More so by far than the bloody jobcenter who when you tell them you are dyslexic and have many problems filling in forms and need help…they give you more bloody forms! November 10, 2007 at 9:51 am #125617 Seb PatrickKeymaster Quite right too. November 10, 2007 at 7:25 pm #125620 Tanya JonesParticipant Baz, do you know if Exeter used to have Freemasonry links? There was a letter addressed to the Grand Wizard of something or other at our address, and when we opened it (after several days of it lurking in the post box), it was a request for the history of Freemasonry in the South West (or something of that ilk). We were confused. November 12, 2007 at 9:40 am #125632 BazParticipant “Grand Wizard” is not, in fact a title in English Freemasonry, it’s Grand Master. The Grand Wizard is the head of the KKK actually. And there are masonic lodges all over the UK. Sounds dodgy to me, anybody who knows the basics of Freemasonry will know there’s no such title in it (Rob and Doug obviously didn’t, see Timeslides). Nevertheless, here’s a few addresses you can send it on to. Devon has a Provincial Grand Lodge, which is in Exeter as it happens (http://www.pgldevonshire.org.uk/index2.htm), or failing that you can send it to us (Library and Museum of Freemasonry, Great Queen Street, London, WC2B 5AZ). Mark it for the attention of Andrew Tucker if you send it here, the Provincial Lodge should be your first port of call though. Where do you work to get asked questions like this though? Or was it to your home address? November 12, 2007 at 10:42 am #125633 Ian SymesKeymaster > The Grand Wizard is the head of the KKK actually No, that’s Colin Baker. November 12, 2007 at 10:46 am #125634 mickParticipant we have photographic evidence. November 12, 2007 at 1:07 pm #125635 Tanya JonesParticipant Thanks for the link, Baz; this now makes total sense. Of course, when I said ‘Grand Wizard’, I meant ‘Grand Master’. It appears that the person got the house number the wrong way round, which is why it ended up at our address. I really should have googled it and put it in the right letterbox! Unfortunately, we threw the letter away, assuming that the sender had the wrong end of the stick entirely. The Devon lodge certainly don’t advertise themselves… November 12, 2007 at 1:17 pm #125636 BazParticipant Yeah, well, saves a brick through the window from the occasional moron. Actually there are 136 lodges in Devon, 11 and the provincial HQ in Exeter itself. No doubt the person will write again when they’ve not got any reply.
