But while testing the boundaries of what I can and can’t access on my temp office job’s internet, I found this: “The later episodes of Red Dwarf are ruined by” http://underthreehundred.blogspot.com/2009/11/should-i-laugh-or-cry.html This is a criticism I’ve never heard before and strikes me as more than a little patronising. Sadly the link to Graham Linehan’s blog is blocked at work. It’s partly the truth though. It’s a question that’s been asked a lot, why are people laughing so much at the crap gags? But it’s the same at any sitcom recording. You are there to laugh at the gags, crap or not. If you are a fan of a show you are more likely to laugh because of the situation you’re in, watching you’re favourite show being made. You want to laugh. You want it to be funny. Some of VIII WAS funny FFS. Steve Coogan apologised for the use of audience laughter on series 2 of I’m Alan Partridge. That was a mistake IMO. The audience suits that series so well. It will be interesting to see how Partridge comes across on film without that laughter. Incidentally, it seems Armando Ianucci IS working with Coogan on the Partridge film, despite saying he never wanted to do Partridge again. Peter Baynham’s also doing it. I say a resounding FUCK YES to that! You’re not only watching your favourite show, but you’re watching it with loads of other fans who like you are wrapped up in the wonder of watching their favourite TV Show in person. Have I ever mentioned that I went to see part of Series 8 recorded ;-) Case in point though, most of the group I was in came out of the recording for our episode saying “Red Dwarf’s back” and how that was the funniest thing we’d ever seen. And that was for ‘Only the Good’. December 18, 2009 at 5:54 am #107036 Arlene Rimmer BSc SScParticipant >Source? This interview with him on the AV Club website is where I saw it.
