The term “globalist” in this context is a pretty well known anti-Semitic dog whistle. Whether he’s using it knowingly or not is another matter, but I suspect he isn’t.

    #273661

Yeah if I had to guess I’d think it was coming much more from a little England, protectionist view point.

The YouTube algorithm has claimed many victims in the last two years, after all.

Right. The best case scenario is that the conspiracy theory is generic in his mind, but the people who chiefly spread it know exactly what they’re doing. It’s bad news either way.

It’s frustrating because the very purpose of a dog whistle term is create this deniability, to turn the people unknowingly repeating it into shields for the people repeating it knowingly. Ignorance is only an excuse up to a point.

Someone on Tumblr is currently writing a slashfic about how Lister manages to change Rimmer’s politics with the power of consensual anal.

(I basically did the same Timeslides one as Dave, except in one image instead of two, not noticing he’d already done it)

edit: Should that last one be ”I still think we’ll come up with something pretty special?” Just used what came up, always possible I’m misremembering the line.

    #273774

No, you’re probably remembering it right. Subtitles often use truncated versions of the full line. It’s mostly because writing a full sentence can take up a lot of room if it’s quite long, and they don’t want it to be too wordy so that nobody can read it before it flashes offscreen, or take up too much space in the frame. It’s got to be concise, punctual.
It’s a feature of subtitles that some users of the Smega-Drive have already made use of. The “Wilma Flintstone”/”No, Wilma Shakespeare.” meme wouldn’t have worked if it used the full line.

You missed the perfect opportunity to do a Quarantine meme. And now… Mister Flibble’s very cross.

    #273787

Ahhh bollocks. Although I did do Quarantine a few days ago

Cappsy and I had a fun encounter with a Chris Barrie fan account on Twitter over this incident.

Needless to say, it turns out in a shocking twist that we’re the real racists for noticing a dog whistle. I am canceled. You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here.

I missed this, but just looked it up and was entirely unsurprised by who it was you had a run-in with.

Looked them up, and oof, the denial. The best/worst was them quote tweeting someone saying “Is it true that “globalist psychopaths” is like a dogwhistle?” with “Maybe to dogs?”. FFS.

I see that account is followed by Doug Naylor, so chance is decent Doug now knows that this is A Whole Thing.

Just an FYI, the person currently running the account is a relatively new person – Dannii who set it up, used to run it for years, was in occasional contact with him, helped organise the Brittas reunion etc., stepped away for a while for personal reasons.

I don’t know much about the person currently running it but scrolling through the tweets looks almost like they keep forgetting this is not their personal account!

I got lazy, someone else finish this.

Only saw this whole thing today. How weird. My initial thoughts were that this is some sort of bizarre joke he’s playing on us all, and if so… bravo. If not, though… how weird. Rimmer has become a conspiracy theorist. “Stay naturally healthy” [emphasis mine] I can only imagine that that is some sort of coded anti-vax message? Someone on Twitter seemed to hint that there might be family reasons as to why he may or may not be averse to vaccines. I don’t really know what to make of this, to be honest.
