Should be interesting! February 7, 2013 at 3:03 am #206118 HelloMabelParticipant I finally got to watch it last night. Danny was very good, though he may have been gritting his teeth (as I was) that even in Paradise, once again we have a show where the white dude is “chief.” The UK and US are both mad for detective dramas, yet where are all the black DCIs? Or has there ever been a black Sherlock Holmes or Poirot? Anyhow, must send a few extra shekels to KCET for airing it. Maybe with a note saying, “That John-Jules guy is talented. Could you pick up more shows with him?” February 7, 2013 at 7:13 am #206119 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >Or has there ever been a black Sherlock Holmes or Poirot? A bit of a stretch considering the *usual* time period of adaptations of both. Also, they were written as white characters originally, weren’t they? Isn’t that like asking if there’s ever been a white Shaft or Oh no I sound racist. >I have never seen Danny in anything but RD! You should check out his work as Barrington… It is legendary. Well, I don’t think it explicitly popped up in the text. Whether Agatha and Arthur would approve is open to debate. A debate I’d back away from. >We’re sure to see plenty of Barrington next tuesday… ;) Is it P-P-P-P-Pancake day already? February 7, 2013 at 10:17 pm #206125 HelloMabelParticipant Seb, who is that? February 7, 2013 at 11:09 pm #206127 HelloMabelParticipant Point of clarification: when I wrote, “a black Sherlock Holmes or Poirot,” I meant, “a brilliant, freelance detective-for-hire, like those two I mentioned, who is black.” I was trying to use… synecdoche? Metonymy? Something like that. :) February 8, 2013 at 3:21 am #206130 JonsmadParticipant There is a black Watson, in cruise of the gods, Sherlock holmes in Miami. “how do you figure that shit, homey?” February 8, 2013 at 9:18 am #206131 Taiwan TonyParticipant > I was trying to use… synecdoche? Metonymy? Something like that. :) Hello Hello(Mabel). A point well made. (Just to clarify, I was continuing with PP3s literal interpretation to do a joke. A joke about me sounding racist… ) I also agree. America have a ton of outstanding black police officers. Alex Cross is African American, isn’t he? Then there’s my favourite example: Frank Pembleton in Homicide. The best character in Homicide by a mile. (His boss, G, is black too… As is G’s boss, the deputy commissioner who wore a white hat and medals.) The UK doesn’t have anything to compete with that. They made up 13.6 percent of the total U.S. population. The black population grew by 15.4 percent from 2000 to 2010. That’s Idris Elba, he was a DCI in Luther: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1474684/ February 9, 2013 at 11:34 pm #206163 HelloMabelParticipant Thanks Jo! I’m going to introduce myself to this show as a reward for finally mastering the ‘pre’ tag.
