Wasn’t there some mention that Doug had this weird meta-project planned that was gonna be about the cast playing themselves and some conspiracy thing?

there are limits, Doug. there are limits.

I was going to be mad if the thread wasn’t called this. Petition for tomorrow’s likely article to be called “Doug has updated his Twitter” as well.

By the way, I do notice he stresses it’s not a series but he doesn’t say it’s not a special. That seems like an odd thing to leave out unless you don’t want to spill that it is that.

I’ll try not to get too excited for more news that might not be as big as I’m hoping.

Maybe he’s leaked it early here and it’s regarding a work of literature that isn’t required anymore:

Be great if after all this the announcement was that it’s finished now, and they’re never making any more.

I was quite excited by the prospect of that, but it was during a period where it seemed like Doug wasn’t going to be allowed to make any Red Dwarf at all, and a show about the show seemed like the next best thing.

Now I’d probably watch it and think “Why not just make more episodes/specials?”

Bit of a weird announcement to tease a day ahead of time, but OK.

Mechocracy Remastered, where a shit cgi Stacky rolls through the view every once in a while?

If I can be serious for a minute (Lance Storm voice, niche reference)

I’d be a bit disappointed if it wasn’t somehow related to new content. If it was new Merch or a Dimension Jump I would feel slightly deflated.

    The movie’s finally been greenlit!

I’d not thought about Merch, I can see it being a new shop and a new range of throwback and new stuff tbh.

If so, hopefully more successful than that sandbag or whatever it was called who ran the XI shop, with the spelling mistakes and shipping problems.

Guessing this might be tomorrow’s announcement.

EDIT (12:15am): Just checked iPlayer (to check that they’re original and not Remastered), and they’re not actually up yet. Maybe 6am?

I guess that qualifies as ‘significant’, the BBC being interested in the audience Red Dwarf used to attract.

Not up yet but all episodes listed on here (except Back to Earth): https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b008ncn6/episodes/guide

If it is that – and not something else that follows on from Red Dwarf being given greater prominence by the BBC – then I’m not sure that’s “tease an announcement ahead of time”-level news?

It is very cool though. Definitely significant for Red Dwarf to be repeated/promoted by the BBC again (outside of special occasions like last year’s Quarantine showing), and I never would have thought we’d see Dave era series on iPlayer!

However, despite it saying “12 series of Red Dwarf come to iPlayer”, they never say “all episodes” and Back to Earth is missing just as it is on UKTV Play, so it’s actually just 11 series. Damn.

    Also, what a brilliant synopsis:

The beloved sci-fi comedy was originally created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. 6 Music DJ Craig Charles stars as Dave Lister, a low ranked caretaker on board the city-sized mining ship Red Dwarf who finds himself the last remaining human being alive after an accident kills the rest of the crew. He wakes after 3 million years in suspended animation, his only companions the hologram of his pernickety and contemptuous bunkmate Rimmer, a creature that evolved from his pet cat, named Cat, ship’s computer Holly, and Kryten – an android they rescue from a shipwreck.

The series ran for eight series on the BBC from 1988 to 1997, before being revived on Dave for three full series and a feature length special titled ‘The Promised Land’.

It describes Lister as a “caretaker”, it implies they met Kryten much earlier than they did, and it says the BBC run ended 2 years earlier than it actually did (if only, eh).

Wait, why am I saying all this now. This is bound to become a news post.

So it’s official, BtE does not exist according to the BBC.  It is neither series nor special, it simply *is not*.

Well, I don’t want to start a whole thing here, but if they’re counting The Promised Land as a series then that’s accurate.

“Red Dwarf hasn’t been on the BBC since 2007” – then what channel did I watch Quarantine on last year? Who’s eating this chicken?

    6am for the iplayer apparently

    #285874

Absolutely and utterly jumping the gun, but I wonder if the significance is a renewed partnership with the BBC for whatever comes next. Either the remaining special(s) or a Radio 4 version by Rob.

I am going to be so fucking bored if this was the entirety of the announcement we had teased. This is good news for the franchise but it’s hardly worth teasing the actual announcement.

Every episode Doug? Maybe we all Mandela effected Back to Earth.

Interestingly TPL is listed under XII, without an episode number, and with a pre-release series VIII promo-shot

Look, with Back to Earth you can at least have the argument between it being a multi-part special or a series, but in no way can a single episode be a series. I refuse.

So not only did Back to Earth not happen, but UKTV Play never happened either apparently…

Is it possible Doug was told that Back to Earth would be included?

Perhaps they figured it was insensitive to have it written in a way that could have viewers pronouncing it ‘me too’, correcting a concerning oversight in the 1988 original.

Strictly speaking, Me Squared is wrong anyway

There is one Rimmer. 1 squared is still one.

    Rimmer squared is just Rimmer

    Me squared is just “me”

This also just implies one Rimmer

The episode should just be called Rimmer and Rimmer and that’s final

    Rimmer squared is just Rimmer
    Me squared is just “me”

Strictly speaking, “Me” refers to 1 person but not literally the number 1.

Obviously the reason is just because “Me squared” sounds better as a title than “Me doubled”, but if we say for argument’s sake that Rimmer’s Brain = 1 and Rimmer’s Image = 1, then “Me” = 2, therefore Me2 = 4 = 2 x Me.
