No explanation needed. To explain, this is intended for standout jokes from Dave Dwarf but I figured I’d include VII / VIII to throw them a bone they desperately need.

A bit of a crass gag (what a shock for VIII) but Chris’ delivery totally makes it.

    #326809

I’d always read it as “you hope it’s only two years”

id never thought of it the other way until now

Nah I always took it to mean “you hope you don’t get bummed in prison”. But then Rimmer does, which is his just desserts for making this joke. Chekhov’s bumming.

But I mean, Lister was totally getting laid before…

Since Ackerman and the guards were standing right there, I figue Rimmer was saved in time. It also makes Lister’s digs at him being “unbelievably childish” in Part 1 less insane.

The human printer smear is such a gloriously grotesque and absurd visual.

I found it genuinely hard to look at the first time I watched that episode.

Series X has a few instances where it feels like Doug is complaining about something that happened recently in his life that doesn’t quite land (being on hold in Trojan, building IKEA furniture in Lemons) but I think him complaining about his inkjet printer in Officer Rimmer takes it to an appropriately ridiculous sci-fi angle that truly works for the show.

Sorry, yeah, that was my bad. I dressed up as a raspberry to egg Graham Linehan’s house and got the wrong address.

Obscene phone call gag in the Ouroboros trailer got me pumped for a voyage to Gag City

There is a fair amount of that in the Dave era in general. But sometimes they are also an attempt at riffing on old technology. Which I tend to feel is a little Futurama at times. I guess there is a point where it’s fun to speculate about the future, but once you start to see where it’s technology is heading, you are then more eager to look backwards at what it used to be for fun.

There probably are a few in early Red Dwarf too, but I can’t really think of any off the top of my head.

The gag of putting Lister’s mind on an answering machine tape probably clarifies.

I mean, “vending machines that don’t work properly” is a Red Dwarf staple.

Backwards is based on a true story where Rob was bitten by a backwards dog and couldn’t stop unsmoking.

Well, in 1989 that might still have been seen as somewhat modern and, from a 1989 look-ahead standpoint, could still be used in the future. Not quite up there with a giant floppy disc in 2020.

I definitely think the small size of the tape was part of the joke though.

I enjoyed that one when re-watching Epideme yesterday (for the first time in years) but wtf was the Marx Brothers one about? Not funny, too niche to even get the reference…weird choice! If you’re going to go for that, go for the *fifth* one, not the fourth one. I dunno…a weird choice.

I’m not sure it was even really intended as a joke. More just a general knowledge question to lull Epideme into answering the much more important question that came next.

I guess Doug had the Marx brothers on his mind with two references in VII.

VII doesn’t have enough AR machine episodes, obviously. They could’ve done one where it’s shot like a classic B&W screwball comedy.

There’s a shot like this in 2001 right before HAL kills Frank. It’s less funny.

I wish someone adapted 3001. It’s kind of a miracle that Keir Dullea is still acting and in such good shape.

    I much prefer 2010 to 2001 myself.
