Sorry guys, gotta get this off my chest.

I’m friends with a media contact on facebook (i.e. I’m their client) and caught her status last night after she’d dyed her hair and she was lamenting that she was now ginger and how she had to ‘finally admit it’ etc. Cue loads of her wanky friends making shitty comments about gingers.

OK I’m an adult now and it shouldn’t have got to me, but man I was full o’ rage. Managed to keep my comment on her status to ‘Hmm…’ She twigged and sent a gushing message saying she hadn’t meant any offence etc etc.

Problem is, we’ve got a networking drinks event tonight which I know she’s going to (where the media buy us agency bods lots of drinks and we all get wasted, huzzah) and I REALLY don’t want to talk to her about it.

    Gah :-( Feel like I’m 12 again.

Spike her drink with your pubes.

You are what you are. I haven’t got any time for people who discriminate against or mock those who have different physical attributes to their own.

    Well, except the blacks.

    (Clearly joking, by the way!!)

Just think “ah fuck ’em, the ignorant bastards”, that’s my attitude.

Anyone who doesn’t realise that ginger hair is awesome must be destroyed. You know what to do, Carrie.

OH ARGH! She came into the agency this morning with her boss and their newbie to have a meeting about my main client (as the media were keen to catch up on my ?1.3 million account). She seemed very twitchy when she knew I’d have to be in the meeting too.

So I embarassed her in front of her boss by repeatedly pulling her up on her mistaken knowledge of my client, like the adult that I am.

    > Anyone who doesn?t realise that ginger hair is awesome must be destroyed. You know what to do, Carrie.

Hopefully that’ll make her think twice before insulting redheads. >:-(

Oh now THAT’S an idea. Cos, you know, it’s catching, like.

Her hair does look pretty awful actually. Like a bottle blonde who’s tried to make herself ginger and failed miserably. She did get ribbed when she walked into the agency. Mwaha.

Thanks for your support guys, sorry I’m being all bitchy mopey.

This is fascinating (in a bad way, but nonetheless). I grew up thinking that red-haired people getting mocked was a clich?. Maybe it’s better in Germany or maybe I just never got to witness it. And one of my best mates in high school is ginger so I would have witnessed it?!
I think red hair is awesome and while I’m happy enough as an almost-brunette I know I’d just love to be ginger. I think it’s very sexy and it’d go great with all my favourite clothes’ colours.

I don’t know. People confuse me.

I got bullied for it between the ages of 9 and 17 (ugh fun) – I dyed my hair before I went to DJ2002 to ‘fit in better’. So young and foolish…

XD Thanks – any excuse to try and nick some of your amazing t-shirt range…

So sorry to hear that. I was bullied from around 12-14 and even though it was for other reasons it’s so cruel when you’re being picked on for things you just can’t help.

Even though I have a strong penchant for girls with red hair and am part ginger myself (got the beard going atm and yep it’s ginger) I know for a fact that at some stage at school I took the piss out of at least one person for being ginger. I hate thinking about doing it now but it’s what everyone used to do. There was even a song that someone (not me) wrote, ‘ginger minger’. When you’re that age you just don’t get how much you’re hurting people and so you can simply fall into bullying that person without even realising. There’s nothing more comforting than a group laugh and those laughs can easily come from focussing on taking the piss out of someone. I have experienced that from both sides.

When will everyone just get into their heads that RED HAIR ROCKS!!! I think Karen Gillan and redhead85 go to show that, right? :)

Well one thing’s for sure, it wasn’t for having ridiculous-looking long hair.

I knew it. It was something about your face, yeah?

My mom has always been a redhead (“Sure it’s *ahem* natural!”), my best friend is a redhead, and I have other family members who are, too. (I think it’s also my sister’s color of the week.) My son loves women with red hair. I never understood why some people had an issue with this. I think the color is beautiful. Good for you for putting the woman in her place. ;)

Nope, it was neither that nor having a name one ‘r’ away from sounding like a synonym for pooing.

The ‘issue’ is that it’s different. It’s something very easy for people to focus on.

getting away from that persecution was one of the big factors in my decision to move to the States. It’s an annoying prevalent form of bigotry and discrimination. It’s socially acceptable in the UK, and that’s unacceptable.

To quote Mr. Ellard (2009-08-27 00:29):

WHY IS MY COMMENT AWAITING MODERATION?!?!

Because it had two links in it, and the thing that tells us a comment is unpublished is small and unobvious.

Heck, I am ginger by CHOICE. My hair is naturally blonde (ish) but I think red hair is amazing. People will pick on anything, and ginger-ism is one of the prejudices which sadly, and ridiculously, is still acceptable in the UK.

Maybe it persists less due to the colour and more because the word ‘ginger’ is funny in itself.

Not a really a case in point but:
