I quite like this one in light of the anniversary statement

Intrigued at the subtitles for this line, actually. Generally misspelled.

    It’s just phonetic.

    It’s just phonetic.

Sure, but they are words that have specific spellings. Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti. And I think bo and wo are fair extrapolation from the pattern. And before anybody calls this pedantic, I’ll remind you (1) this database is should be as accurately searchable as possible and (2) to check the banner at the top of the page.

Fair points. I should have been thinking about G&T’s fragile reputation.

Now the question here is, do we prefer accuracy or artistic integrity?  ‘Twas the BBC who misspelled it, after all, nothing to do with G&T.

*Artistic integrity does not apply to typos, although some cases become so infamous there is a cultural basis for leaving them as is, such as ‘a moment’s violence for the Queen Mother’.

FWIW I checked the Blu ray subtitles, and they do use the non-phonetic spellings, so I can only assume this was an active editorial decision for the Smega-Drive.

I don’t have the book to hand but I’m pretty sure those phonetic spellings are in the script in Son of Soup. The Hol Rock bit might be in the first novel as well.

The subtitles spell them wrong on the DVD

Interesting… maybe the DVDs were used for the captions, but the Blu ray was used for the images? I’m certain the process has been explained on here before, but I can’t remember it now.

Either way, the Blu ray release changing it means the phonetic spellings aren’t sacrosanct at least.

Yeah the subtitles were taken from DVDs and the screenshots from the Blu-rays because why would we make anything simple? I do know Danny has taken some creative license with the phonetic lines in places but if possible it was taken from the script books if there was any ambiguity.

Because the blu-ray release wouldn’t ever inadvertently ruin any aspect of the show.
