… feel free to continue debating The Doctor’s Daughter and the series numbering. Alternatively, don’t.

In other news, I’m officially a Troughton fan having finally seen Tomb recently, and I think I may have to buy either The Invasion or The War Games. Also, I’m amused that the Tomb Cyberman toy comes with two Cybermats – and one is the full-size one, and one is the smaller version. CLEVER. It’s a shame I’m holding out to try and find a Troughton figure, as that comes with the same Cyb (sans cybermats) – and I don’t want two.

Oh, also, despite not looking so much in pictures, Victoria is HOT. Old Patrick clearly had by FAR the most attractive set of companions. Even Jamie was pretty good stuff for the ladies.

    > The Invasion or The War Games

Buy Both! But if you have to choose one I say go for ‘The Invasion’, it is another Cybermen story and is a slow burner at first but when it gets going it is bloody brilliant. Plus it has lost episodes now animated.
‘The War Games’ is a wonderful story and regardless of what you may of heard it is not boring, not even in the middle. Episode 9 or 10 are probably the best in the story. Oh and the DVD is packed to the brim with bonus features.

If you can get both, then get both, if you can’t then go for ‘The Invasion’ which is cheaper and has Cybermen and animation!

See, I’d have thought Zoe would have been the clear winner, but then I saw Tomb. There was just something about Victoria in that story.

    Oh, alright… two things.

(also, isn’t Zoe meant to be about fifteen when she joins the TARDIS? I mean, I know the actress was older, but still. Ew.)

She is young but not that young. I’d say 18, certainly to have a job on a space station. Oh I wish ‘The Wheel in Space’ didn’t have any missing episodes, episode 3 and 6 are so good.

The actress to play her was 20 when she got the role.

The Mind Robber and The Seeds of Death are bloody brilliant too. I never fail to enjoy Troughton as the Doctor and it’s a huge tragedy that so many of his stories have episodes missing or are lost entirely. I’m guessing they’ll do more animated releases later on in an attempt to complete the collection, but it won’t be the same. The fans will buy them, there’s no doubt of that.

Finished ‘The Twin Dilemma’, it was one of my least favourite stories. It isn’t as bad as I remember though, it certainly isn’t as bad as ‘Time and the Rani’ or ‘Last of the Time Lords’ or ‘Power of the Kroll’, it is still very poor but it has gone up in my estimation, I’d give it about a 3/10 which is 2 higher than before.

    #103034

This is perhaps a similar dilemma to sweaty old men like myself fancying Rani from Sarah Jane Adventures. The actress is obviously 19 or so but we can assume Rani is only supposed to be 14 or 15. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a school uniform… Just lock me up.

That’s not as bad as people on the OG forums fancying Yasmin Paige who actually WAS 14!

He’s done plenty of decent writing over the years. Please let Rowan Atkinson be in the episode. Failing that, Hugh Grant would also be great! It was rumoured ages ago that Hugh was almost going to be Jackson Lake in The Next Doctor (the part that David Morrissey played).

Haven’t seen the Mind Robber yet, but I loved the Seeds of Death. However the friend I was watching it with thought it was too long and boring. But, to be fair, he isn’t one of us. But he will be. Oh yes, he will be.

Personally I think he sounds all right. His performance could very well be a bit like a younger Troughton style. What IS the Doctor supposed to sound like?? We know Matt can act and that he LOOKS great as the Doctor. I have plenty of faith if some others don’t. This episode is gonna be fantastic too.

Re Colin Baker. I got The Twin Dilemma the other day, and watched it, and, if I’m honest, didn’t really expect much. But, the cliffhanger to part three aside, which was hilarious (“PERI!!”), I actually really enjoyed it, and quite like Sixth Doctor stories.

Well he said wasn’t right for the part, it isn’t that I am slating Matt Smith, I certainly hope he will be great, I just don’t agree with Moffat on his opinion of who could play the Doctor which gets me a tad worried about Matt, but I will stay positive and not form any opinion on him until a few weeks into his run atleast.
Also note I said “don’t trust him so much”, I still think he will have picked a good man for the part, I just don’t have so much confidence as others, though I couldn’t have as much as some since I don’t see him as a god.

Let’s have ‘Time and the Rani’ 13 times, atleast we can look at Karen.

‘Power of the Kroll’ had Mary Tamm, it is still bad. ‘The Time Monster’ had Katy Manning, again still bad. ‘The Invisible Enemy’ had Louise Jameson. ‘Time-Flight’ had Sarah Sutton and Janet Fielding. ‘Timelash’ had Nicola Bryant. ‘Dragonfire’ had Sophie Aldred. ‘Fear Her’ had Billie Piper. I could go on.

    #103282

To think they sold parts 1 & 2 seperately on CD. Only a mug would have bought them all.

Incidentally, I think the version of the theme on the McGann audios would be a good direction to go in for Moffat’s series. Slower but freaky and powerful. Instead of BLAM BLA BLAM, BLAM BLA BLAM and all the brass.

The Jon Pertwee story ‘The Mind of Evil’ has aparently been re-colourised and Nicholas Courtney has done a commentary and some interviews for the release.

Speaking of Nicholas Courtney he is in very good health and recovered very well from his stroke, he was meant to be in SJA and Hornets Nest but obviously he wasn’t up to it but according to people who went to the Regerations convention he is doing very well and looks forward to seeing if he can do a BBC Audio or BF Audio with Tom Baker (who is now open to BFA according to an interview with him).

So good news all round for Brig fans!

It’s sad, really – Big Finish probably know full well that having Tom in an audio drama would see sales (and publicity) leap tenfold (you only have to look at how much exposure an apparently quite average audio drama is getting compared to some of the brilliant work they’ve done over the years). But it’d be nice if they could afford to turn around and tell him to stick it, given his previous attitude.

I’ve just pre-ordered Dalek War which is out in 2 weeks people! I also ordered Mall Rats region 1 version but that hasn’t got anything to do with Who.

Currently watching ‘The Keys of Marinus’, for such a tight piece the mistakes of the production are popping up a whole lot more than on any other Hartnell I have seen, I could see a shadow of a boom mic for an entire scene with Ian and Barbera. Still it doesn’t detract too much from the story, it is interesting in that it is several different adventures in one, a nice idea but one that obviously put strain on the production team. ‘The Caves of Androzani’ arrived today too, good night time watching will be that one.

    >I also ordered Mall Rats region 1 version

Hope you got Mallrats X, and not the standard version – ‘cos the version with special features FINALLY came out in region 2 a few years back. Although the US version does have the proper cover.

    #103464
    JamesTC
    Participant

The version in region 2 with special features is poor, a laser disc commentary and a few other bits like trailers. According to the info on play.com this is the 10th anniversary version, 2 sides with a version of the film that is 30 minutes longer, being one of my favourite films ever I certainly would like to see a 30 minute longer version as well as a documentary on the making.

    #103465
    Seb Patrick
    Keymaster

No, the reissued R2 version has all the features the original R1 did, including all the deleted scenes (I should know, ‘cos I’ve got it), the commentary etc. Before that we had an appalling version that had nothing but trailers. They’ve both got the rubbish cover that emphasises Shannon Doherty and Jay and Silent Bob, but the reissued one was recoloured blue. Whereas the US release always had the gorgeous and brilliant “comic book” cover.

However, the one you’ve ordered is Mallrats X, which has a lot more, so that’s good. Although the version of the film with all the extra stuff cut in doesn’t really work – it’s nice that stuff makes a lot more sense (no more bad redubbing of lines, e.g. “Hey, aren’t you the guy that broke up with Brandi Svenning?”, or random non-sequiturs like “Well, if it isn’t my… neighbour!”), but the Governor’s Ball scene isn’t as well done as you’d hope, and a lot of the cut stuff makes the film drag. Also, on the original deleted scenes section, they got away with keeping the original music for the telescope scene – Built to Spill’s “Big Dipper”. But come the Mallrats X edit, it’s gone. Shame, it fits rather well (and is a cracking song).

    #103466
    JamesTC

This will be the third Mall Rats I will have, I got the original for a cheap price at the now defunct Music Zone then I manged to get the reissued version which is the one with commentaries and stuff but still not alot of extras. I’m not complaining, I mean I only paid like ?3 for the original, ?5 for the next version and ?7 before for the region 1 version, ?15 all together isn’t that bad. Now all I need is Jersey Girl, An Evening With Kevin Smith 3 and Zack and Miri Make a Porno and my Kevin Smith collection is complete (yes I have Clerks the Animated Series =])

So that Doctor dude, he’s cool, eh?

So I recived my copy of ‘Hornets’ Nest, Volume 1′ today and do you know, it’s rather charming. Production wise it’s nowhere near as sophisticated as Big Finish stuff; but the two old vets reminiscing setup between Mad Old Uncle Tom and Richard Franklin works incredibly well in utilising Baker’s unmistakable tones and has a uniquely gentle feel which, while robbing the story of any great tension, makes you feel all warm inside. Admittedly the way the Doctor is written and performed doesn’t really fit into continuity – it’s like Doctor Four didn’t regenerate and grew to be, well Tom Baker as he is now, this isn’t really a criticism as it would have felt wrong somehow to have denied the passage of time since he last properly played the role. I’ve always been a fan of Paul Magrs stuff (Mad Dogs and Englishmen is the dogs bollocks) and the familiar tropes are all present and correct with a quirky mix of the surreal and the macabre. Good stuff, I look forward to Vol 2!
