Well both of them actually, Lister and Cat.

More their bladders really, on Backwards world. Judging by their reactions to Cat ‘in the bushes’ we can assume they didn’t need to relieve themselves at any point.

We don’t know how long they were on Backwards earth but looked like it was at least a few hours, and we saw them neck a couple of pints, they must have pretty strong bladders.

    That is all.

Wouldn’t he have noticed it going in not out?

No, they un-necked them, which means they arrived on Backwards Earth with full bladders that were then emptied into their pint glasses.

    Ah damn good point.

    Backwards Earth is too confusing.

It reminds me of the Book Club discussions for the Backwards novel. The book is at least slightly more sophisticated in its approach than the episode is, but both of them break down in logic once you think about it too hard.

I was going to make the “no, they un-necked the drinks” point as well, but I thought about it some more and realised it doesn’t actually make a difference to the question.

Either way, there were hours in between their arrival on Backworld and them un-drinking a huge amount of liquid, so it’s still notable that they didn’t un-piss at any point in that period.

Upon arriving on Backwards Earth, they were both too blitzed by the beers in their system (that they were going to undrink later in the episode) to notice that they were peeing backwards in the bushes.

At the point where Cat decides to squat in the bushes, his bowels are at their most empty. When Lister orders a pint he’s already drank it, and he appears refreshed after he’s spewed it into the glass. This seems to suggest that despite their physical bodies functioning backwards, the impulses telling them they’re thirsty, full, and so on continue to run forwards. So if they were destined to un-piss on Backwards Earth, they would have felt the urge as soon as they landed, but since they were able to hold it in until after they left (ie. before they arrived) it wasn’t any trouble to do so, since they would only feel the relief of already having gone.

Strangest thing in Backwards is when they get on the bike, are they conciously trying to pedal forwards but being forced to pedal backwards, or what? What the fuck is going on? How do they steer?

Maybe bikes are one of the inverted rather than just chronologically reversed things and pedalling forwards doesn’t move the wheels (like pedalling backwards on a forwards bike), so Lister has to pedal backwards to move it. This confused him, and since he was unrecovering from a fight and unsobering down at the time (as established), he thought he was pedalling forwards.
