Was rewatching Give & Take the other day and this line stood out to me as being really weird. Obviously Kryten is referring to the unconscious Cat and Lister on the stretchers…but, “fire them up”? Why would you need to “fire up” a stretcher? How would you even do that? It would maybe make sense if they were motorised or something, but they’re clearly not- Kryten and Rimmer just gently push them down the corridor. So what’s the point of the line? Nobody fires up any beds.

Fire up the Cat and Lister, surely. Haven’t seen it in ages, but if he is indeed referring to the stretchers then I have no idea what that could possibly mean. Maybe the budget couldn’t stretch to anti-grav self-driving stretchers

How do you “fire up” the Cat and Lister?

Show them an episode of The Flintstones.

Force the Cat to wear grey out of season

“Let’s fire up the retros and them out of here”

Robert got some tropey dialogue wrong. Maybe.

“Let’s find the mop and get them out of here!”

Weirdly, in the mobile game the dialogue is “They’re on hover beds, let’s fire them up and get them out of here” whereupon there’s a level where you have to maneouver Lister out of the space station on some jet-powered floating bed.

So presumably “Let’s fire them up” refers to the hoverbeds…but they’re not hoverbeds in the actual episode? Weird

Hoverbeds are so common that in the future they refer to all hospital beds the same way whether they hover or not.

Like how you “tape” something on DVR even though you aren’t using a videotape.

I would presume they were meant to be hoverbeds, but the line didn’t get changed when turned out to be impractical to realise.

It still just about works if you take it to mean “let’s get them moving right away”.

An excellent and inventive suggestion, sir, with just two tiny drawbacks: a) We don’t have any jet-powered hoverbeds; and b) there’s no such thing as jet-powered hoverbeds outside the fictional unlimited Red Dwarf budget.
