(I’ve been fonder of the cosy NZ series in recent years, but with the last couple of UK series it’s come home).

This guy arrogantly eulogising himself (in not-so-secret possession of Data’s body) is like when Rimmer did it in extracurricular canon.

Supposedly brought about for a few decades by the Grand Nagus Zek out of fear of the “insane” anti-capitalistic Federation.

Someone on Reddit quoted Steven Colbert’s comments about Chevy Chase at his 2002 comedy roast. It reminded me of Kryten’s closing argument in defence of Rimmer:

Not a line but a general vibe: I just watched Mickey 17 for the first time and a lot of it had a very Dwarfy feel to it. They have a giant spaceship with a small crew who live in grey, submarine-like sleeping quarters and eat in grey cafeterias. The tone is a mix between character-oriented stuff revolving around the lowest-status members of the crew and absurd sci-fi concepts. The interactions between two duplicates of the same character feel quite Me² at times, and even the spacesuits remind me of the Series I-era suits, especially when one of the characters has to clamber along the outside of the ship in one. The technology to backup people’s minds feels very like hologram tech. And the bio-printer is straight out of Officer Rimmer.

I didn’t actually love the film, but I thought the parallels were interesting.

It might actually be a direct reference but –

“You still with us Holly?” Farscape, referring to an alien with a penchant for holograms. Later in the same season there’s a direct reference to the Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy, ad libbed by Ben Browder so… possible?

I think it’s a reference and maybe even an ad lib, Ben Browder brings up Craig Ferguson’s Red Dwarf role in this high-quality video (from around 3:20).

Yay! I got one! I remember Hattie told me she went to a recording of that show and he recognised her and got her down out of the audience lol.

R.L. Stine’s Fear Street: Haunted (Spoilers!!!)

“You came back to Earth to prevent your death. You can do it. Get away from this house and stay away. If you’re not here, there’s no way I could kill you.”

“I’m already a ghost,” Paul said sadly. “It’s alive Paul who has to stay away.”

The ghost was right beside her, staring down at Paul’s body. “So that’s how it happened.”

“But why? Why did you do it? Why did you sacrifice yourself?”

TNG season 1 compilation, part 2

    ‘The Arsenal of Freedom’

The resolution of buying victory is only a bit M-Corp, as Kryten’s is more of a clever trick while Picard just realises he should respond to the sales pitch a bit late.

There’s also an enjoyable smeg-up when they pull the camera out too far and reveal the already-dubious planet to be a set, while also flying a model past to draw your attention to that bit.

    ‘We’ll Always Have Paris’

The time “hiccups” are a bit White Holey and they interestingly aired on the BBC on consecutive days (6 March and 7 March 1991 – though the TNG episode originally aired in 1988).

The extended Casablanca parody wouldn’t be especially noteworthy if not for this possible subconscious influence:

I remember thinking that about Arsenal of Freedom, but I never brought it up. Honest! There’s also TNG season one really feels more like TOS than later TNG, and a lot of it has to do with those planet sets. Hide and Q is very very TOS as well.

I also remembered some similarities between Thanks For The Memory and the TNG episode Clues, but thought it may have been discussed here previously, so went to Google for the article I’d previously read about it. It was a post from you.

Watching season 1 again for the first time in almost 30 years, The Arsenal of Freedom is my favourite (good balance of cheesy, fun action and funny satire) and I decided Hide and Q is the worst episode they ever did outside of the clip show, even more than the racist one.

Almost done TOS in my complete weekly watch through. I watched all of TNG Season 1 a little over a decade ago and do not plan on doing it again.

From memory (having only seen them once), I enjoyed Encounter at Farpoint, 11001001, and Conspiracy/Neutral Zone. Some of the other episodes I might vaguely remember being good, but I wouldn’t put my name behind it. Of course the racist episode and the “Planet of the Women” episode are about as bad as you’d expect.

My favourite part of Encounter at Farpoint was Deanna Troi’s thighs, which they immediately cover up in the next episode and for the rest of the series.
