Mark Wilkinson’s quite nice Red Dwarf art

I only had the first Remastered video, but the nice covers with their clever connecting spines are probably the best thing about that project. Here they are, from his website.

He also did some art that was inserted into the episodes less fittingly.

I also hadn’t realised (i.e. hadn’t paid attention to) that he also did the art for Last Human.

He also did some more random commissions in 1996 for some reason (T-shirts?) that I like less because of unalike likenesses and randomness.

But I was more pleasantly surprised to learn that he’s also responsible for some familiar album art, making a nicely obscure one degree of separation between Red Dwarf and Judas Priest etc.

It always bugged me that the space background of the first III video messed up the consistency. But yeah, pencil aside, they are really gorgeous sleeves.

Always loved the Remastered art. I never clocked in the past how cleverly constructed they were to make the spines connect like that.

Was anything at all created for the planned remasters of IV and beyond or did it never get beyond the “vague plan” stage?

TPL is a goofiness that I can get behind, this is just too much for me. It’s up there with the US book cover for “interpreting something too directly” territory!

Overall though these have always been neat, something quite timeless about the art style that suits the show well

They might have backed themselves into a bit of a DVD cover style corner by committing to an idea that they then need to keep up longer than it has legs. I guess they’ve got more freedom to illustrate things beyond ship interiors/exteriors here and it doesn’t just have to show places that are home to the Dwarfers – series IV could have Ace’s ship and Justice world for example

Some of the Star Trek VHS ranges had similar unnecessary self-restrictions. DS9 committed to featuring a character’s face superimposed over the station, so some volumes highlighted some forgettable randomer from across those two episodes or just went with a regular character again when they couldn’t think of someone. They finally let that go in season 7.

Meant to mention, I rewatched some old eps recently after reading this thread and it struck me how well the art actually captures the feel of the model shots.
