Overall I really enjoyed series XI, and although I’ll need to re-watch again and again, and my opinions will no doubt change, as it stands I’d rank them (best to least favourite) as:

    1. Can of Worms
    2. Officer Rimmer
    3. Give & Take
    4. Krysis
    5. Samsara
    6. Twentica

I certainly thought the series became funnier as it went on. Either that or my expectations changed.

Considering Dave broadcast series 1-7 this year in the run up, that’s quite a statement… ;-)

The first 5 are very close in terms of quality. Samsara is good, just a bit of drag factor roots it to the bottom.

I will never get who people like so much about Trojan, I always found it the more series VIII-ish of all moderm Red Dwarf in both delivery and jokes. Only bits I thought were funny was the final payoff to the moose running gag, and the line “No, we just hosed him down and gave him a hat”….both are very funny moments, but 2 good jokes does not a good episode make. The rest of the episode was a complete trainwreck as far as I was concerned!

I admit BTE went a bit wrong, but it did a majorly important thing for me that makes me love it, and that’s that it made me like Lister again. Sometime around VI and through VII and VIII, he got really unlikable for me, so BTE’s emotional focus on him made me actually give two smegs about his story again, and X and XI have more or less maintained that.

    Anyway!

Seems like the first half of XI will be right up there on the next big survey.

Surprised to see so many high rankings for Can of Worms, with the other divisive episode of XI – Krysis – I can sort of see that as being okay but I just didn’t find it funny, it was a bit 1980’s as a concept and I didn’t like the universe conversation, but it raised the odd smile.

Can of Worms though, genuinely, I’ve been watching Red Dwarf for over 20 years and I’m not being hyperbolic when I say that it’s made me go off Red Dwarf a bit.

Then again, opinions are like arseholes etc etc

    –DAVE ERA RANKINGS–

    Classics:
    1. Give and Take
    2. Krysis
    3. The Beginning
    4. Twentica
    5. Lemons

Pretty Damn Good But With Flaws:
    6. Trojan
    7. Samsara
    8. Officer Rimmer
    9. Dear Dave (I like it in a cozy Series I way)
    10. Fathers & Suns

Has Decent Bits But Mostly Bollocks:
    11. Entangled
    12. Can of Worms
    13. Back to Earth

I just marathoned XI with my friend and it’s interesting how my opinion’s already changed. I enjoyed Can of Worms on first viewing but upon repeat, while some plot points are clearer, I realize how bollocksy it is now. Inversely I hated Officer Rimmer on first viewing but am really warming to it now.

Slainmonkey – I think the love for Trojan comes down to it being the first ‘proper’ Red Dwarf after such a long absence. It’s definitely The Force Awakens syndrome. I remember just being so happy to see the series back to the ‘classic’ format/setting that I ranked it highly on first viewing. I admit it hasn’t held up, but strangely, just like The Force Awakens, I’m still very fond of the episode but acknowledge it is deeply flawed and can totally understand why some would dislike it.

That’s my theory anyway! Maybe if Dear Dave had been the X opener I’d have been just as forgiving. But it wasn’t. And as you can see aboveā€¦I’m not!

    1. Give & Take
    2. Twentica
    3. Krysis
    4. Officer Rimmer
    5. Samsara
    6. Can Of Worms

I’m beginning to think Krysis is my third favourite of the series behind Give & Take and Twenica.

It’s not the funniest episode but it has so much charm and the episode flows so well.

Ultimate Dave Era series in order of run…….

    1. The Beginning
    2. Give & Take
    3. Officer Rimmer
    4. Krysis
    5. Trojan
    6. Twentica

Still cogitating on my XI ranking, but my Dave era megamix, in broadcast order, would be:

    1. Trojan
    2. Lemons
    3. Twentica
    4. Give & Take
    5. Krysis
    6. The Beginning

That’s my Dave Era megamix series as well and in that exact order, but choosing episode 2 is hard because both Lemons and Twentica are the epitome of Episode 3 romps. I’d say Lemons narrowly gets pushed back to Episode 2 because the middle section is slightly reminiscent of Legion and Better Than Life, whereas Twentica cinches the Episode 3 slot because of the Gunmen and Justice parallels. The other episodes are pretty obviously in the proper slots. A shame though that Give and Take builds on the Beginning’s father reveal or I’d almost recommend newbies just watch that mix by itself (even though I do like Samsara and Dear Dave more than most).

Actually, that megamix hybrid of X-XI is a pretty damn fine series. It might sit right alongside the original six.

    #218011

    1 – The Beginning
    2 – Lemons
    3 – Trojan
4 – Repeat of Dimension Jump
    5 – Repeat of Meltdown
6 – The odd scene or two out of Officer Rimmer

So it looks like things are settling to:
    1. Give & Take
    2. Samsara
    3. Krysis
    4. Can of Worms
    5. Officer Rimmer
    6. Twentica

As for my megamix in running order:
    1. Trojan
    2. Give & Take
    3. Lemons
    4. Samsara
    5. Krysis
    6. The Beginning

Not sure on it all yet though.
