Not sure if I’ve asked about this before, and I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this regardless, but some years ago when they announced you could buy Howard Goodall’s Red Dwarf soundtracks including the one for Series XI, they said that the one for Series XII, called “Rhapsody in Red” would be coming soon. Did that ever materialize anywhere on the interwebs? The OCD completionist in me still wants to know (as well as wanting to know when the hell they’re going to ever release Murray Gold’s soundtrack for Series 10 of Doctor Who, and if not, WHY not?!).

The Howard Goodall Red Dwarf mini-soundtracks are on Amazon. I think they’ve been linked to in comments on various other threads on here somewhere.

As for the Doctor Who s10 OST – unlikely. It’s a licencing thing. I emailed SilvaScreen, who’ve released all the other albums, a couple of years ago, and got this reply:

    Hi Simon
    Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately, we only know that the S10 soundtrack is not available for us to license from the BBC. Maybe it will be one day, but we have no news concerning it at the moment.

Sorry not to be more help.

    Shame.

Series XII soundtrack never ended up being released, unless it slipped out without this place noticing.

Just double checked ‘Howard Goodall’ on Amazon Music – there’s only the ‘Piano Fantasies’ release on there, Red Dwarf-wise. Don’t know what’s happened to the others, off-hand.

    Thanks guys. Figured as much.

As for Series 10 of Doctor Who, I recall someone took it upon themselves to extract  the soundtrack directly from the show itself and uploaded it as one long track on YouTube and did a pretty decent job, so that will have to suffice for now and is worth looking into for anyone else who has a Series 10 soundtrack-shaped hole in their heart.

I believe the reason for Rhapsody in Red never being released was stated by Darrell, formerly of this parish, to be related to the fact that virtually none of it was used in the finished episodes in favour of the temp track and Howard being quite upset about this.

Doctor Who s10 – might we soon have an answer?

Hot damn, thanks for that glimmer of hope.

Also just read that Murray Gold’s coming back to do the music for the 60th anniversary specials, so that also gives me hope since now that he’s a going concern again for Doctor Who, hopefully that also means that the Series 10 omission will be even more glaring than it has been before and lead to the powers that be finally getting around to releasing it. (Was that sentence a run-on? Checking… nope. Just absurdly long and rambling.)

I was having a very, very bad day yesterday – a year to the day that my long Covid symptoms first appeared, and, coincidentally, a letter arriving for the DWP telling me I can’t get PIP for my fatigue, pain and breathlessness because, apparently, I need to have fatigue, pain or breathlessness to be awarded PIP for mobility issues – but learning that Murray Gold is coming back eclipsed all that misery. I’m not sure I can take all the orchestral bombast again.

I always think of that quote from the Wife in Space blogs: “nothing encapsulates the mystery and otherworldliness of Doctor Who quite like a brass-fucking-band.”

Totally off-topic but that’s absolutely rubbish (yet not at all surprising, it’s routine for them to make nonsensical decisions) – make sure you fight for this.  If you haven’t already had help from benefits specialists, that would be best if you can get some.   And/or if not, knowledgeable forum here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/benefits-tax-credits

P.S. they say you have a month to request a Mandatory Reconsideration, but the absolute deadline is 13 months if you have ‘good reason’ (such as needing to wait for help), and even if DWP reject it the tribunal will accept it as evidence.  An MR needs to be written, not over the phone, focused on which descriptors you meet and why.

I can respect it when people don’t go for Murray Gold’s soundtracks, and I’ll admit that it was refreshing when the soundtrack eventually changed after over a decade to Segun Akinola’s futuristic Blue Man Group-style techno beats (which I really enjoyed, at the very least for background listening if not always for soundtrack purposes). But Murray Gold will always have my respect for those times where he nails it, like the Gallifrey theme or the Heaven Sent stuff and basically the entire Christmas Carol album, and just for continuity’s sake with RTD coming back, I’m still excited.

But yeah, even I have to admit that Murray Gold’s soundtracks have a glaring lack of theremin.

On the flip side, I was always disappointed when the black and white serials would fail to live up to the promise of the eerie intro and just be some boring historical.

I loved Murray Gold’s music for Doctor Who, but he’s already scored 10 full series and numerous specials. I thought Segun Akinola did a good job in the Chibnall/Whittaker era (even if his tracks were not as memorable or independently listenable as Gold’s) and his main theme arrangement was probably the most authentically “Doctor Who-ish” of the modern era – for actually sounding synthetic and otherworldly, to contrast with Gold’s overly orchestrated arrangements. So when he announced he wouldn’t be staying on after what was effectively just 2 and a half series, I assumed that Davies would be looking for someone totally new. So it’s kind of disappointing that he wasn’t. I’m excited for the RTD2 era due to how he’s evolved as a writer and a producer in the past decade with Cucumber, Years and Years and It’s A Sin under his belt, not because I want him to just redo 2005-2010 with most of the same people.

Thank you. This is actually my mandatory reassessment, I’m onto the appeal level now. Have done it before with my girlfriend who has ME (she lost her PIP – got no points – and then in the appeal they actually awarded her more money than she was getting before) so it’s disappointingly familiar ground. Definitely going to do a bit of research before, though, to get any more advice and see if anything has changed.

Back to Doctor Who, I definitely enjoy Akinola’s electronic stuff, there were a lot of synth pads used in series 11 that I like in particular, and his theme is the only new series arrangement that I actually like. Every time I think of Murray Gold I just see him doing the series 4 theme and going mad adding more instruments. “How else do I make it even more dramatic?! Drums! Electric guitars! I will kill off every remaining atmospheric element of the theme!” Stop, it’s already dead.

Sorry, rant over. I just hate Murray Gold’s music

Personally, I’m thrilled that Murray Gold’s returning (it might only be for the specials, for all we know). Theme arrangement aside, I couldn’t really take to Segun Akinola’s stuff (not that it stopped me buying the Soundtrack albums each year). However, I happily let Murray Gold’s DW soundtracks play away in the background when I’m doing nothing else.

In RTD’s Instagram post about it, he said Gold would be returning for “the next season”. As we on this site know all too well, one 3 part story can be considered a season…. but for Doctor Who historically it hasn’t been.

According to an article I read (about the article from DWM, so an article about an article), Murray Gold said that the Series 10 soundtrack will be released “by hook or by crook.” So that’s assuring.

The funny thing for me is that my desire for the Series 10 soundtrack is more about OCD completionism than a need for a particular track. I can’t remember a particular Series 10 episode where I needed a specific track, unlike say, like the Heaven Sent soundtrack where watching Heaven Sent for the first time and hearing that music I’m like, “That’s good. Will you slam that down on tape for me?”

Heaven Sent was the Cassandra of series 9.

Just messing around. That’d be more like the frog one in series 11.

Heaven Sent was the Back To Reality of Series 9, in that it was the best episode of the best series, don’t @ me.

Heaven Sent was the Out Of Time of series 9, in that it was a fantastic episode with a smart time-loop plot and a killer cliffhanger that had me anxiously awaiting the next episode, only to be really disappointed when the resolution aired and turned out to be some barely-related guff with a stupid time-travel loophole that completely negated the logic of the story up to that point.

(Also just realized posting this that Noddy is freaking Higgins from Ted Lasso! Who would’ve thought that an actor from the best sitcom of our time would also pop up in Ted Lasso?)

I mean, I looked it up and it’s Jeremy Swift who is indeed Higgins on Ted Lasso, although admittedly Noddy does have a Mark Benton conspiracy-nut-about-to-be-shot-by-a-plastic-mannequin vibe.

    #284441

He doesn’t look that much like Mark Benton. He does have Clive Swift vibes though.

I realize this is a bit of a necro-post, but to be fair it’s a bit of a necro-update IRL:

They finally announced it! They’re gonna release the Series 10 soundtrack! (And incidentally the 60th specials and Series 14 and 15!)

Fuck yeah! We did it everyone! All those wishes we used on this instead of world peace, they’ve finally paid off!
