She’s no slouch in performance, either. But she’s not my main reason for staying with the show – that reason is Josh Friedman, the exec producer and lead writer. Mainly because he wrote two of my favourite movies of recent years, War of the Worlds and Black Dahlia. (His blog – hucksblog.blogspot.com – inadvertently started the whole ‘Snakes on a Plane’ meme, too, but we won’t blame him for that.) I think my disappointment with the first episode was clear to all, but I’m not ready to dismiss it outright just yet. But to my suprise the script is full to match the action, timelines, sub-plots it has it all, and its clever. And the casting of Summer Glau is genius. They keep trying to do funny bits with Cameron (aka the Glauminator) like in this week’s episode where she goes to see the grief counsellor (who I think was played by the guy who was Charlie’s brother in Lost, so add him to the woman who plays Penelope (Desmond’s ex who’s trying to find the island) who on Terminator is married to Sarah Connor’s ex from before they went 8 years forward in time (and why doesn’t he find it strange that John, who’s supposed to be 15, looks no different 8 years on??)). Annnyway, she shouts at him what the suicide girl said to her and it’s not clear whether it’s meant to be funny, disturbing or WHAT. This probably means it’s the direction that’s crap, not the writing. It’s not Summer’s fault. She’s brilliant in every scene. Did I mention I want her in my bed?
